Peter Murrell is in court in Edinburgh today. This is for the preliminary hearing which was postponed from before the election. It will be interesting to see how the criminal proceedings proceed.

The Soutars (stagecoach) stopped donating as soon as Alex Salmond stepped down and the Weir’s a few years later. IIRC there was even a report that Colin Weir wanted money back at one point.

The weirs had donated something like £4m since winning the lottery. They were the primary donors to the Yes campaign fund as well.

For all people criticised Alex Salmond’s glitzy dinners and glad handing of the rich he got the money in. That pretty much stopped when Nicola Sturgeon took over.

As always more will come out.
I wonder what type of sentence he will get?

Presumably the focus may well also shift back to NS as well and her supposed non involvement/involvement. I think this is far too big for her to be untouched by it all now. It's the fact that she signed off accounts and hindered access to the full accounts that others were entitled to see and a fair few resigned due to a multitude of inappropriate behaviour surrounding the financials of the SNP.

Whilst I could accept that luxury pens, watches and small scale items could slip under the radar, a camper van (albeit parked at the mother's) and a high end car are not so easy to pass off.

But it still comes back to the crux of the matter that others within the organisation were questioning the financial accounts and were refused access for sign off etc. Balance and checks etc. These can't just be wafted away as easily as a salt and pepper set at several thousand pounds.

NS resigned once the net was closing in on her husband and let's face it she would have known that all of this was about to be made public.

In the fulness of time we will learn much, much more.

She’s in it up to her neck!

HedgehogsOnTheWall · 27/05/2026 17:43

I haven't read the whole thread so sorry if this has been covered but how do the police know what he bought in so much detail? I assume he wasn't stupid enough to whack everything on an SNP credit card (maybe he was...) so he must have been moving money around and using different accounts and so on. How can they be sure they've traced it all and match up transactions etc?

That's the thing - he didn't just transfer money to his own account, he bought actual stuff with SNP money, like a 90th birthday card.

They both had huge wages why did he do it?

Did the Weir family get their money back does anyone know ?
The last thing I’d do if I won the lottery would be giving any to a political party.
There are so many wee charities out there I would be supporting

I don’t think so. I don’t suppose there is a way to take back a donation really.

But they probably ended up more focussed on their divorce, and then Colin Weir’s sad death.

I see on Twitter that she was asked about the fancy pens in 2022 and the answer was that they were “gifts from a relative”

She just lies and lies. She knew.

ah, maybe, I just recall the phrase

Jeez, it’s all so sleazy

Scotland should be better than this

Scotland IS better than this. Wipe the SNP and the Greens from the map and this could be a decent country.

It’s Scotland. If you want to be in England, move there.

Scotland would be well rid of the Greens and SNP.

Dearg · 27/05/2026 19:13

I admit to a large pinch of schadenfreude at the demise of the house of Murrell; but I do actually have some sympathy for those who thought they worked for, and donated to, a party and leader who had more integrity than the ruling UK government of the time of the crimes.

Turns out, other than a strange taste in camper-vans, there’s little to choose between them 🤔

Who knew? eh, Nicola? eh, Colin? Who knew ? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sadly, a substantial minority of the Scottish population are Anglophobes with a chip on both shoulders. It's this resentful, parochial, aggressive, ignorant, tribal and sycophantic mentality which explains the popularity of SNP and Old Firm.

It gets worse

I now think they were partners in crime rather than in a lavender marriage

I agree. We'd manage absolutely fine without them, and would no doubt do far better without the thieving hands in the till on one side and student politics on the other. But then again, some people up here have very low standards and nothing to lose so we keep getting the same old same old, with the same old results.
