Horrendous scenes on the news from Glasgow after the final whistle and now from Glasgow city centre. As a non football fan, it blows my mind that people act this way but I am surprised the SFA didn’t foresee this. If I am not surprised at what’s been happening as a non fan, surely those in charge should have seen it coming and acted?

I am sure it was just a few weeks ago the police released CCTV images of fans they were wanting to trace after violence at another game - might have been Rangers fans. The pictures were all of middle aged men. Husbands, dads and granddads. Utterly abhorrent behaviour and I don’t understand why these games aren’t played behind closed doors with no fans. I know that wouldn’t prevent the violence in the city centre this evening but at least the staff and players on the pitch would have been safe.

Surely I can’t be the only one who had a feeling the day would end badly.

The previous game you referred to was a Rangers /Celtic game with fans of both teams involved
Today could totally have been anticipated,I think Celtic should have arranged somewhere for their fans to celebrate
Part of Glasgow was basically taken over by the Celtic support today and that is unacceptable (for any team)

Makemeinvisible · 16/05/2026 21:01

Well even before today's match city centre residents were anticipating trouble because of the behaviour of the Celtic fans on previous occasions. And the police criticised the club for not making any plans to have an organised celebration should Celtic win. They took the precaution of removing all the glass out of the bus shelters before today's match because they knew there would be trouble. Every body knew this would happen today if Celtic won and it's a disgrace that it wasn't prevented. Horrendous for Glasgow, for Scotland and for football
Celtic should be footing the bill for the clear up.

And also the way the match ended with yet another pitch invasion so they weren't even able to finish the match and the Hearts players were physically and verbally abused on the pitch. Imo Celtic shoukd forfeit the match or be severely sanctioned by the SFA

There has been a marked deterioration in the behaviour of football fans in Scotland over the past year or so. And its absolutely ridiculous that with all this going on they are reportedly going ahead with allowing alcohol at matches again. It beggars belief.

I am a football fan and have attended matches for many years though very rarely top flight and I'm really embarrassed by what's going on. The clubs such as Celtic and Rangers really need to get a grip of what their fans are doing.

I feel for the police having to deal with it all. I have just seen a Facebook clip of the hearts players coming back to Edinburgh and they are still in their team strip so it looks like they’ve not been able to shower and change.

What happened today had nothing to do with Rano

They had to put the Hearts players straight on the team bus for their own safety. They couldn't thank their own support at the stadium or fulfil their media commitments.
Absolutely disgraceful scenes .

Sorry what do you mean?

It might have been Celtic fans causing trouble today but Rangers fans have caused plenty of trouble on other other occasions. I remember them destroying the benches in George Square not so long ago.

FunnyOrca · 16/05/2026 21:22

I also think the team should be sanctioned for not planning a party or working with the police. Were the jubilant fans just supposed to go home? Of course they wanted to gather somewhere and the team should be making a safe place for them to do it in. S as Lao are they should be footing the bill for the clean up. This keeps happening and it’s not fair to everyone else. The teams that let their fans do this need sanctioned.

Also, a pitch invasion and flares?! as above, I cannot believe they are considering allowing alcohol at these games when this is What happens with a 12:30 kick off!

waitresswalled · 16/05/2026 21:24

Did the game actually finish?

I’ve been in the town tonight and it’s definitely wild party drinking atmosphere but seen nothing too bad, doesn’t feel intimidating like it has done on old firm days. The amount of road closures were a total ballache though.

Ihaveausername · 16/05/2026 21:34

I am a football fan and thought this behaviour disgusting. I will admit that I was worried what would kick off if Celtic lost, but did not expect this if they were winning! I think there should be action taken (but unlikely to happen) and fans banned from future games.

Namingbaba · 16/05/2026 21:43

I wasn’t surprised Celtic invaded the pitch even though they won. Their previous game against Motherwell ended the same way with an invasion after they won.
I think it would have been a lot worse if they lost.

Football fans are so loyal to their club that they blame everyone but their club and always have an excuse for why their fans acted so.

EverythingIsComputer · 16/05/2026 21:57

I wasn’t really a football fan until this season and have been quite invested the HMFC story, they’ve now got me as a fan.

Was at the pub watching the match today and came away gutted for them but also appalled knowing the east end of Glasgow was going to get trashed, again. I think the clubs should pay and it was really irresponsible that Celtic didn’t have anything planned. There won’t be any repercussions for the 2 pitch invasions either I imagine. Again we’ve seen today some of the worst of Scottish football.

Same! Just so frustrating when so many people wanted to go into town and celebrate and (as always in Glasgow!) ruined by dickheads 😡

I do think there should have been a plan though, like a fan zone on Glasgow Green so people could go down the Gallowgate and then somewhere to gather and celebrate out the way of everyone else that could have been managed properly (and paid for by Celtic!)

Ugh

AgnesMcDoo · 16/05/2026 22:45

The behaviour of Celtic means is appalling.

Life bans needed and Celtic need to be threatened with playing behind closed doors

AgnesMcDoo · 16/05/2026 22:47

I’m going to the cup final next weekend (Pars fan) and am seriously concerned about the Celtic fans

InstantlyBella · 16/05/2026 22:49

Rangers fans are way worse, Celtic fans actually have a really good reputation. Must have been some Rangers fans out for some vengeance after their poor end to the season or some Unionist Hearts supporters riling them up. Of course the media will be lapping it up, they just can't to tear into the Bhoys.

waitresswalled · 16/05/2026 21:24

Well people are debating whether the ref actually blew the final whistle. And some are questioning as to whether it should be treated as an abandoned game.

Savvysix1984 · 16/05/2026 22:57

I saw a statement from the referee and he said he did blow the whistle. Im a Celtic fan and the behaviour from some fans was terrible.

AllBranGirl · 16/05/2026 22:58

Disgusting behaviour that’s been going on for too long. If you put a football top on you can get away with practically anything in Glasgow. A total embarrassment!

Glitterkitten24 · 16/05/2026 23:00

The pitch invasion was disgraceful, it’s embarrassing to be a football fan in Glasgow, people just can’t behave themselves.

Oh this is nonsense. I’m a fan of neither team - I’ve seen both make a fucking mess of Glasgow when they win something. When they win.

Football brings out the worst in Scots. It’s embarrassing.

As someone from Glasgow, I don’t think it’s the whole of Scotland, it’s a Glasgow thing. It mars the celebration, players having to be escorted off the pitch because people can’t control themselves, no proper final whistle.
Martin ONeill looked raging, wish the clubs would tell the fans to fucking behave themselves and condemn the bad behavior.

When did Celtic ever make a mess? Sorry but they are not even in the same league for bad behaviour as the Butcher's apron loving sectarian bigots from Govan and I'm a neutral, so I have no inherent bias.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 16/05/2026 23:19

@InstantlyBella heres 2024 and 2025
for starters, there’s plenty other years at the end of a quick google search; this is an all too regular occurrence. From both sides. It’s pathetic, and the rest of the city has to endure it.
