Horrendous scenes on the news from Glasgow after the final whistle and now from Glasgow city centre. As a non football fan, it blows my mind that people act this way but I am surprised the SFA didn’t foresee this. If I am not surprised at what’s been happening as a non fan, surely those in charge should have seen it coming and acted?

I am sure it was just a few weeks ago the police released CCTV images of fans they were wanting to trace after violence at another game - might have been Rangers fans. The pictures were all of middle aged men. Husbands, dads and granddads. Utterly abhorrent behaviour and I don’t understand why these games aren’t played behind closed doors with no fans. I know that wouldn’t prevent the violence in the city centre this evening but at least the staff and players on the pitch would have been safe.

Surely I can’t be the only one who had a feeling the day would end badly.

Also 60,000 seats and 800 only for the away team is quite some ratio, suggesting the club doesn’t trust their fans at all and knows what will happen.

When did Celtic ever make a mess? Sorry but they are not even in the same league for bad behaviour as the Butcher's apron loving sectarian bigots from Govan and I'm a neutral, so I have no inherent bias.

You don’t sound like a neutral. Celtic only have a reputation for being well behaved amongst Celtic fans. If rangers invade the pitch it’s because theyre wild animals, if Celtic do it it’s just because they’re just so happy or some thing justly provoked them.

The Celtic players that invaded the pitch accosted the hearts players. Those players had to leave quickly and couldn’t even speak to the media or get changed due to safety concerns.

The riot police had to be called as Celtic fans were attacking the police and in one case police were trying to respond to a medical emergency.

Also the idea that the trouble was caused by rangers or heart fans is stupid. Do you really see any fan going out and buying Celtic tops so they can frame Celtic fans?

I really hope there’s a proper investigation. People shouldn’t get away with acting so badly.

Actually yes, the Old Firm is a uniquely savage rivalry and Rangers fans hate Celtic so much that I could absolutely see them impersonating Celtic to make it look like they were the cause of disorder. I would put nothing past them lot.

weebarra · 17/05/2026 06:37

I’m not a Hearts fan but am a huge football supporter and I was really upset and embarrassed by what happened at the end of the game. Even though they lost, Hearts have had an amazing season and the players should have had the opportunity to thank their fans, instead of being physically assaulted and having to go home still in their kit.
And yes, Martin O’Neill looked very unhappy at what was going on.

Fifth consecutive year according to local community groups 😡

@InstantlyBella you aren’t neutral at all in this, that’s clear. Stop excusing this, it makes you look like an idiot. This wasn’t rival fans dressed up to frame Celtic any more than Rangers trouble is Celtic fans wearing blue tops. Give your head a wobble.

Glasgow football arseholes fans -I’ll excuse the jags here as I am unaware of these antics from them - make Scotland look like Neanderthals.

Embarassing.

Given the context behind Celtic being a club made by and for Irish immigrants in a hostile country like Scotland, I find the kind of language exhibited in that article particularly distasteful. 'Trashing the image of the city?' Oh is it not OK to be a catholic now? That's actually really upset me thanks for showing me that.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 17/05/2026 06:52

And there we have it - brought religion into football as per. The article does not reference any football clubs historical beginnings. Just the shitty behaviours of idiot fans. And you claim persecution. Since when was alcohol
fuelled pitch invasion, violence and leaving a trail of litter behind you a “catholic” tradition.

Amazing.

SixAndJuliet · 17/05/2026 06:57

Apparently there was still 30 secs of the match to be played when the invasion happened. Whether the ref did or didn’t blow his whistle, the fact remains that it would be a dangerous precedent to set for a football match to be ended when there is a pitch invasion by the winning teams fans when there is still time on the clock.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out purely from an officiating perspective (and I really am a neutral).

waitresswalled · 17/05/2026 07:16

Surely there needs to be quick decisions by the SFA as there is another game next weekend.

Rangers fans are way worse, Celtic fans actually have a really good reputation. Must have been some Rangers fans out for some vengeance after their poor end to the season or some Unionist Hearts supporters riling them up. Of course the media will be lapping it up, they just can't to tear into the Bhoys.

So you genuinely think some rangers fans have not only bought a Celtic top, they’ve also bought a ticket for the game too with the sole purpose of causing trouble during the game? They’ve then gone out into the city and caused so much trouble that the riot police are involved? Do you honestly think that?

OP posts:
Sskka · 17/05/2026 07:21

She’s only winding you up. Nobody actually thinks Celtic fans are the good guys nowadays.

TobyEsterhase · 17/05/2026 07:45

The single biggest thing which could be done to improve Scottish society would to forcibly disband Celtic and Rangers football clubs. They represent ignorance, violence, bigotry, parochialism and self righteousness.

A classic example of the ignorance, bigotry and paranoia concomitant with supporters of Old Firm

Instantly Bella (or IB for short, like Irritable Bowel) is currently occupied on another thread complaining about how JKR books in Waterstones make people feel unsafe…..the trolls troll folks. Best ignored 😂

Utter utter bullshit. Just stop. Both Rangers and Celtic fans are equally as bad. I have no skin in the game, I hate football and I’m not religious and rangers and Celtic fans are two cheeks of the same arse. Both an embarrassment to Glasgow.

That will never happen and if it did it would be the end of Scottish football
Other things that will never happen are the SPL or SFA taking any serious action on n this
There has been trouble after Celtic won the league for the last 5 years and given the circumstances of yesterday’s game preventive measures should have been in place
It was reported last week that Celtic FC had refused to work with Police and Council on this

waitresswalled · 17/05/2026 08:20

If they refused then there needs to be sanctions, ie moving the game next weekend away from Glasgow and not permitting any Celtic fans to attend. All Celtic tickets revoked.

OP posts:
YellingAway · 17/05/2026 10:52

Have to admit that it was quite funny to read the troll accusing the terrible behaviour as a result of Rangers fans somehow buying a shirt and miraculously getting tickets for seats in what presumably will all be held by season ticket holders!

However, on a serious note, this is not the first time this has happened and serious questions needs to be asked about the fans behaviour both in the stadium and outside of it. It is not acceptable for Glaswegians to repeatedly have to pay for the clean up through their already exorbitant council tax.

Blanketpolicy · 17/05/2026 14:03

We all know the teams that have significant numbers of fans involved in this kind of behaviour. ds(22) is a football supporter and his friends have been physically assaulted twice, heading away from the stadiums unprovoked, at away games with both these teams this year. The only way to stop this is harsher punishments. If fans want to act like immature yobs hit them where it hurts most and that isn't fines for the club.

Disqualify / meaningful point deduction or relegation for repeated offenses such as the scenes yesterday.

Obviously that is going to hurt the club, and hurt genuine fans, but I don't care. The public and taxpayer should not be expected to keep footing the bill and players, refs, police officers, public should not be concerned for their safety for a game of footie.

EverythingIsComputer · 17/05/2026 15:17

If I was a Pars fan and had a ticket for Saturday’s match at Hampden I’d be weighing up if I’d feel safe going. Are we going to see the same scenes this time next weekend?

A lot will need to happen this coming week to stop this happening but I can’t see it myself. Ask if it was any other non old firm side that behaved this way, would the SFA, Police Scotland let them away with it?

TipsyLaird · 17/05/2026 16:14

Absolute pond life. I would pass a new bylaw - anyone found in a city centre or within 2 miles of a football stadium wearing a balaclava or a face mask is instantly arrested. These disgusting neds have trashed their own city centre because their team have won a football competition (which they have won many time before?)

Scum of the earth.

TipsyLaird · 17/05/2026 16:27

As someone from Glasgow, I don’t think it’s the whole of Scotland, it’s a Glasgow thing

As someone else from Glasgow, it's not even a whole of Glasgow thing. You never hear about Partick Thistle fans throwing bottles at the police. Just the toxic Old Firm, fuelled by their knuckle dragging sectarian hatred.

TipsyLaird · 17/05/2026 16:29

When did Celtic ever make a mess

When they spray painted all the signs round this way green, white and orange?

I cannot believe there are people on here supporting thuggery and vandalism.

FunnyOrca · 17/05/2026 19:40

The recent fire demonstrated that GCC have better things to be spending budget on than clearing up after football fans.

Hearts had a plan agreed with ECC and police for potential victory celebrations. The police had asked Celtic, who refused to plan anything for their fans, thus setting them loose on the city. The club really need to answer for this.

Secondly, I only just read that apparently pitch invasion isn’t a criminal offence in Scotland like in England and Wales. I think it should be!

My husband (neutral) was watching at home and said that Celtic reserve players were actually in the Hearts dug out after the second goal, goading and riling their reserves up. It’s no willst the game behave like that when the team set the example.
