The fire started in a vape shop, apparently but seems utterly out of control now. No trains in or out of the station. Has hit the Grand Central Hotel too.

Wow this is unbelievable. I hadnt seen it reported until now. The street was a complete dive but the buildings were beautiful. Has the glass dome on the corner definitely fallen in?

Yes gone, and the whole structure behind it down Union Street. This is from the Herald from about an hour ago, you can see the dome is missing:

For the curious non-Glasgwegians, here's an image of the building:

This is the glass done on the corner of Gordon Street right before it collapsed.

My boss has messaged us all about making alternative transport arrangements & to let them know asap if we can’t! I suspect it will be shut for a day or two!

It could be much longer if the buildings are unsafe. The fire at the station hotel in Ayr a few years ago stopped all services for 2 months and it was nearly a year before full schedule resumed

Wow! How do you tackle that?!

Plump82 · 08/03/2026 23:29

I can't see how this isn't going to reach the station. So sad this is happening. It's a horrible area of town but the buildings were beautiful. I remember my college lecturer always telling us to look up in Glasgow as that's where you saw the real beauty of the city.

Seeingadistance · 08/03/2026 23:29

This is awful! Just terrible to see.

FoxyLoxyWolfedChickenLicken · 08/03/2026 23:32

Oh my goodness I’ve just seen this on the news. We were in Glasgow earlier and saw a bit of smoke coming from a shop, it didn’t look serious. We heard a little bang a few minutes later but never realised it was the same shop.

Just took this screenshot. Looks bad 😭

It looks like the Blitz.

So sad when old buildings get destroyed.

Alpacajigsaw · 08/03/2026 23:34

News saying the station itself not damaged, fingers crossed

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 08/03/2026 23:36

I can’t see how this is not going to reach the station either.

ImTooMessyButImTooClean · 08/03/2026 22:44

Will the station be able to open tomorrow? It’s gonna be chaos if not!

Nope closed till at least end if the day. I’ll need to work from home as I have no other travel options and I think it’ll need assessed as the station sit directly behind the burning buildings.

hartfordco · 08/03/2026 23:39

The poor businesses in that building is what I’m thinking about. People who will be let go from jobs that aren’t there anymore. As well as the station closure and the extra costs it will put on people who will have to pay for alternative ways to get to work that they can’t afford. The fire is going to affect people so much more than the loss of the building

I get really nervous about batteries now. Lithium is quite new. As it ages there’s a lot of things in people’s houses which are going to start going boom.

Also drives me mad that all these powerbanks are needed for travel now with airline on mobile tickets. Was flying last week where they were selling powerbanks in the sky and just thinking this is a recipe for fucking disaster.

This!

i'm still a bit shocked that lithium batteries can cause this level of fire though. I had hoped that a vape shop would have better systems in place, but I suppose I can't think what they are

Thank you to the people who replied explaining. I really hope it's under control soon. I also thought of the arts school fire which was the last time I was up that way - a very long time ago but it's stuck in my mind because it was so awful.

editing for clarity, that fire happened after I'd left the area on the train.

BashfulClam · 08/03/2026 23:46

My husband is on a Rangers forum and a guy said he watched his team get beaten, went for a subway sandwich and got evacuated from the shop and managed to get one of the last running trains to London and the driver had a heart attack on the way…

The way HAs jump on tenants for having mobility scooters which arent even lithium batteries but lead acid and yet places like these vape shops are allowed to do exactly as they please.

AllPlayedOut · 08/03/2026 23:04

The two teams and a large number of their supporters are a bloody embarrassment to this city. I wish that they’d also fuck off, along with the vape shops.

What had the football got to do with this fire?

I know! Alston and Gordon st coffee are two places I’ve spent a lot of time in. The blue lagoon, sexy 🤮 coffee, not to mention all the buisinesses down Union st. 😥

Butchyrestingface · 08/03/2026 23:53

Most recent photo I saw showed Blue Lagoon as the only thing left standing on that corner. Though whether it is still is by now ...

This was the very recently opened vape shop. Something tells me health and safety wasn’t the number one priority...

Lithium batteries cause a lot of fires on waste sites. They really aren’t good

littleorangefox · 09/03/2026 00:08

HortiGal · 08/03/2026 22:42

It’s the Forsyth Building on Union St, now saying it’s partially collapsed, such a shame beautiful building.

Is the Forsyth Building not the one across the road where Greggs is on the corner?

rainbowunicorn · 09/03/2026 00:09

Erin1975 · 08/03/2026 22:44

The liquid in vapes is mostly propylene glycol. It is not flammable.

It's the batteries that are the problem
