Glasgow Central is on Fire!

The fire started in a vape shop, apparently but seems utterly out of control now. No trains in or out of the station. Has hit the Grand Central Hotel too.

I was so hopeful that Union st would improve with the lovely building on the other side finally being turned into a hotel. 😩

I wonder what hideous modern replacement will be allowed.

Sad that the Egyptian Halls had lain vacant for decades with finally a potential future to preserve them.

Union St will never look the same again 😞

But does it say that it was from a dodgy vape in a shop used for money laundering?

Even the name of the fucking thread is false!

You're looking to much into this.

There's really not any inaccuracies on here that you need to get overly upset about.

It's a fire, the fire started in a vape shop, the building attached to the station is consumed by an uncontrollable fire. Vape shops are known for their tax avoidance and money laundering. You're reaction is over the top to some throw away comments.

It’s terrible to think of how many businesses will have been destroyed in one day.

AnneShirleyBlythe · 08/03/2026 22:59

EmeraldRoulette · 08/03/2026 22:10

I saw this, but then I also saw that some of the platforms are open?

I really hope everyone's okay. The fire seems to have spread - is that correct?

For a vape shop fire to get so out of control, but it spreads that far, is it like a kiosk in the station or something?

No it’s an old building in Union St adjacent to the station. My DS went for a train at 530pm & had to come home as all cancelled. I gave him a lift to the next town which is on the Glasgow Queen St line. At that point had no idea it was so bad.

MrsFinkelstein · 08/03/2026 23:00

I've been completely oblivious to this until I happened to go onto Instagram and saw an update from my hairdresser - his salon is in that building. I was just there yesterday. There were so many wee businesses just in his block alone, nevermind the whole building. This will be devastating to them.

Thankfully so far, no injuries.

All this damage and loss of history from a shitty hideous vape shop that was probably a money-laundering front.

totally. sigh. what a waste.

I used to vape with one of those pen type ones and recharged it overnight behind my bed. Woke up in bed one night......with my actual bed on fire ! The button had somehow got depressed I think, overheated and the battery then exploded into my pillow which was by then alight ,as was my duvet and mattress with a line of burnt carpet behind my headboard . Suffice to say,I immediately quit...but it was shocking just how quicky it spread .Had I left it charging downstairs overnight ,we wouldn't be here now 😰

That is incredibly scary.

Zooeymither · 08/03/2026 23:01

Very sad, another iconic Glasgow building potentially lost, the dome on the corner of Union and Gordon St was a real landmark for many of us.

Thoughts are with the firefighters tonight.

And so sad to see Glasgow mentioned twice on the BBC News at 10 headlines. Yet another prominent city fire and another clash of Old Firm football fans. Doesn’t do our reputation much good.

FloofBunny · 08/03/2026 23:03

Beautiful old Victorian building, what a shame. 😢

AllPlayedOut · 08/03/2026 23:04

The two teams and a large number of their supporters are a bloody embarrassment to this city. I wish that they’d also fuck off, along with the vape shops.

Are you in Glasgow? You should have an idea how many of them are dodgy.

Vape shop caused the blaze. It's now spreading to Gordon St. The dome has fallen. Central is at risk.

The damage is heartbreaking.

Will the station be able to open tomorrow? It’s gonna be chaos if not!

My boss has messaged us all about making alternative transport arrangements & to let them know asap if we can’t! I suspect it will be shut for a day or two!

ActoBelle · 08/03/2026 23:07

Been watching it on TikTok, seems a big fire.

I was on a train bound for Glasgow travelling from down south. Around 6pm they announced Central was closed, we were held at Carstairs for an hour and then terminated at Motherwell. There were a couple of buses put on but I managed to get picked up. I’m sure they will have a contingency plan in place but it will be disruptive, even coming in by bus/road will be likely to be impacted. Just saw the news that sexy coffee on union street has been destroyed

I'm glad that you managed to get a lift and got home safely. I agree that this is going to be massively disruptive because as well as the trains being off the streets up either side of the station which are both closed are major bus routes. The closure of George Square is already causing so much disruption with services being rerouted along roads that are now closed by the fire. They'll be running out of ways to get across the city centre by road. I'd advise anyone to avoid the city centre for the next few days at least.

stickydough · 08/03/2026 23:10

I need to go to bed but it’s hard to stop watching for updates. What a terrible thing to happen.

Forty85 · 08/03/2026 23:12

My siblings business is in the building, they had to evacuate quickly and most importantly they are safe but their business/equipment is gone and their personal belongings which they fled without, including phone. Very sad.

kittensinthekitchen · 08/03/2026 22:48

Maybe everyone should stop speculating and gossiping until investigations are done.
You can already see so many inaccuracies on this thread, I'm not sure how adding to a tragedy with speculation helps anyone.

You know this is a discussion forum right? We’re here to discuss.

Thank you. I feel fortunate I was travelling just as it started, there was a backlog at Motherwell which was why we were held at Carstairs but at least it was only a transpennine train from Manchester with 5 carriages. Just seen on BBC ones from London have been held and they have much more passengers and a journalist has said he’s been held at Lockerbie so trains must be backing up

The fire will have burned extra hot and spread rapidly because of the lithium ion batteries in the vapes when they go its a nasty fire thats tricky to put out and easily spread ti the rest of the building

toddlertoenail · 08/03/2026 23:18

It really is a blow to the Glasgow skyline. I’m glad there haven’t been any casualties so far and the services are trying to hold the fire from the station itself 🤞🏻you know it’s serious when they run hoses from the Clyde for water supplies

UnilateralDecisions · 08/03/2026 23:20

This is so awful.

And because of a stupid bloody vape shop as well.

Starbright102 · 08/03/2026 23:21

Wow this is unbelievable. I hadnt seen it reported until now. The street was a complete dive but the buildings were beautiful. Has the glass dome on the corner definitely fallen in?
