Because they have learned nothing from Brexit. I mean, it's sort of their raison d'etre, banging on about independence and it does resonate with some of their fans who believe that should Scotland separate, we'd all be loads richer. They do appear somewhat confused though - a majority in parliament is a mandate, the biggest number of MSPs is a mandate, a vote for "pro-indy" parties is a mandate.... Anyone would think they were either making it up as they go along, or hedging their bets.

Are we supposed to forget all about the incompetence, the failing NHS and education, the scandals and all the other fuck ups?

So if you don't want to separate, don't vote SNP or Green in May.

John Swinney

How John Swinney plans to put his stamp on the SNP as election looms

There is a renewed emphasis on independence as the party meets less than a year before the Scottish election.

The ship has sailed. They had their chance. Scotland voted to stay in the UK. They can't just keep asking till they get the answer they want.

"They had their chance?" lol

Wow. How unutterably arrogant.

Do you mean like England voted in Margaret Thatcher in 1979?

Should England never have ben allowed a vote ever again? Just because they made a vote in 1979? (pretty poor choice at that)

If you dont understand how democracy works, then God Bless you and good luck to you in life.

I think we're veering down the conspiracy theory route here. Jeez Louise.

I think we're veering down the 'derail the discussion route'

I dont think there is anyone called Louise here 😉

RobG why do you think Scottish women on here have any interest in your attempts at colonialism? Why do you think you have any right to dictate how residents of another country should manage their affairs? Do you do the same with other countries too?

(oh this will be hilarious...)

Colonialism? In what way have I been an advocate for that on this thread? 😆

Your behaviour is. Your belief that you know what is best for another country that you seek out a discussion by residents of that country to try and dictate to them what political opinions they should hold.

Try minding your our business and letting the people of Scotland form our own opinions.

(I doubt it 😉)

I live in Nairn. Get over yourself.

I dont think you understand the meaning of that word, respectfully.

And if you don’t understand the difference between referendums and general elections you shouldn’t be partaking in this discussion

Ahahahaaaaa! 🤣

AND -there it is.

Oh I do, I do very much understand the difference between the two, and thats called 'shifting the goalposts'

(Not quite as many different posters on this thread as it appears.)

Its shameful the way the English people treat the Scottish. smh

RandomGeocache · 19/10/2025 09:38

AND - there it is.

If you don't support independence you're not properly Scottish, probably English and probably a "toarie".

Correct.

The number of people who join discussion threads of this kind and PRETEND to be Scottish is extremely sad.

All to try to control the narrative. (unsuccessfully)

The lack of respect to the Scottish people by the British is awful.

If Scotland was worthless/subsidised/ungrateful/unable to stand on its own, etc. the English would have become 'Independent' years ago.

England CAN leave the Union ANY TIME IT CHOOSES.

But England never will. Without Scotland England has no place on the world stage and cant pay its own bills.

England is also, (regrettably) massively in debt. But that is not the fault of Scottish people. Nor Wales.

Nasty? What specifically makes you say that about me?

You name-calling, name-caller you. 😉

(personal attacks, definitely a theme here at Mumsnet, sadly)

RandomGeocache · 19/10/2025 09:55

Your obnoxious point of view that people who aren't fully signed up to the indy cause aren't properly Scottish? And your incorrect inference that people posting on this thread are not even Scottish, they are all English?

Clear nonsense, like the rest of your posts.

No, I did not say that and you must not put words in my mouth (which you are) I would suggest you read my post a second time, respectfully.

Just because you dont like what I am saying doesnt make it obnoxious, nor does it make it 'rubbish'

Lots of people go on these types of threads and pretend they are Scottish. Its been happening since around 2012.

I am not being obnoxious, merely factual.

My posts are not nonsense, and respectfully, your reluctance or inability to engage with a point I make in this discussion thread doesnt make it so.

There is an interesting article in the times today that goes some way to dispel our historically put upon inferiority (those Scots outwith Edinburgh middle/upper classes were seen as inferior though)

How Scotland helped to invent modern racism

The Scottish invented pretty much everything.

I would prefer to build them up;
How The Scots Invented The Modern World
"Who formed the first literate society? Who invented our modern ideas of democracy and free market capitalism? The Scots. As historian and author Arthur Herman reveals, in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Scotland made crucial contributions to science, philosophy, literature, education, medicine, commerce, and politics--contributions that have formed and nurtured the modern West ever since..."

"it was in Scotland I found the three best things in my life: my wife, my constituency and my regiment," - Winston Churchill
