How are you enjoying the 'UK' heatwave?

Every time I open a news app the lead story is about the UK heatwave. As usual this is actually just an English heatwave. Down south it might be hot, hot, hot but up here it's not, not, not.

Currently 14C feels like 10C here in the Kingdom of Fife. It was pishing it down with rain when I got up. I have even popped the central heating on for an hour to take the chill off the house.

PS - lighthearted 😜

But you do need reminding that the UK is more than just England and Scotland.

My Welsh colleagues have been sharing similar moans with me but thanks 😂 you must be in a hotspot that my colleagues aren't.

We've had wildfires by us but it's still pretty cool we are only 17 today

Gettingbysomehow · 01/07/2025 11:17

Scotland is becoming ever more attractive by the day. I thrive in cold weather, this heat is hell. But my ex husband lives there so its a no go area sadly.

Where are you @Gettingbysomehow

My garden is getting ridiculously overgrown with weeds and the grass is running away with itself due to all the rain. 😥

I am in Essex and it is absolutely boiling here at the moment. 30/31⁰. It was yesterday too. I am only even semi comfortable inside with a fan on me.

I do like heat and good summer weather, but I would prefer it a few degrees cooler at around 25⁰. That would be more comfortable to me.

If you could give us a list of the best and coolest places in Scotland to live, that’d be great Grin

South West is lovely and mild. 😊

Arrearing50 · 01/07/2025 11:30

Although, it’s been a lovely spring and summer in Edinburgh this year - lots of great blue sky days. I said to dh, it’s like Scotland is getting English summers from the 80s/90s and drive south about two hours drive over the Scottish border it’s somehow a French summer.

if we wanted to mix up the discussion!

AmyDuPlantier · 01/07/2025 11:34

It’s about 18 right now in Fife, but kinda overcast and humid. It poured during the night though which sounded lovely.

It was unbelievably hot on Sunday and I’m fried a little bit 🙄🤣

Coffeeandallthebooks · 01/07/2025 11:37

Just south of Glasgow here. Accidentally left the living room window open overnight as I'd opened it to keep the dog cool.

Came down today to the bloody heating on! DH had set it to 13 instead of turning it off, so it must have been colder than that before dawn. It is off now and the house is 22, 16 outside.
It's due to rain so I'm going to have to take a waterproof jacket out with me in spite of how muggy it is.

I do have sympathy with those in hotter weather, we visited MIL in Bedfordshire one hot summer and its impossible to sleep.

Something really needs to be done by local councils about hot weather, free access to water sites, fan and AC hire, cold refuges. It's no longer just a matter of opening a window to keep cool, and they need to start taking extreme temperatures as seriously as shutting schools and gritting the roads during blizzards.

bungobungobungo · 01/07/2025 11:43

Really far too hot here in the very SE of England. I am Scottish and miss the weather more than I thought I would, and yes, even the rain.

Hahaha! Love this!
Am I allowed on Scotsnet as I had a DNA test recently and I’m proud to say that I’m 16% Scottish?

TheNightingalesStarling · 01/07/2025 11:49

Travelled from Yorkshire to Edinburgh yesterday. Packed my thick jumper but haven't needed it! But definitely a lot colder.

Since we have travelled for a formal event, very happy with cooler temps as DH would melt in his suit!

Dappy777 · 01/07/2025 11:52

It isn’t exactly an English heatwave. It’s a heatwave covering the southern half of this island - i.e parts of Wales and most of central and southern England. It isn’t hot in Newcastle, for example.

It’s an interesting, newsworthy event because it’s unusual to have heatwaves so early in the year. So it tells us a something about the changing climate. Believe me, no one here in Essex is boasting about the heat. It’s horrible. It might be nice if you live someone empty. But in an overcrowded place like Essex, with endless tiny houses all jammed on top of one another, and traffic that makes you want to scream, the heat is torture. When we had that forty degree nightmare a few years ago I was literally googling house prices in Inverness.

Yep, not sure where that poster is but in my part of Wales we had just one warm day yesterday! It's been nothing like heat wave weather.

I'll tiptoe back out of Scotsnet now but just wanted to back you up in your talk of England being in a heatwave - that was my impression too.

feellikeanalien · 01/07/2025 11:55

Well the temperature dropped 5 degrees from when I left Newcastle yesterday till I got home, about 20 miles from the Scottish border in west Northumberland so maybe we need to re-set the border to Hadrian's wall.😄

Edited

Someone on this thread posted earlier - "I'm nearly at the tippy top of England, in the north east, and it was over 31 degrees yesterday" - that seems to fit the definition of a heatwave.

I'm in Edinburgh - a couple of warm days recently, but certainly nothing that can be described as a heatwave.

Okay so it's only 14 today but it was 23 yesterday which I think counts as 'roasting'?

Have you been hiding under a rock?

I am in Scotland. It's been boiling here! Too hot to do f all outdoors. I have been indoors all the time due to how uncomfortable the heat is.

Only just got out my first summer bike ride this morning as it's been favourable conditions outdoors. Lovely cool breeze.

What heatwave?! No heatwave here, yes it's quite warm, but that's it. Quite overcast in fact.

Where are you? I was all over the country yesterday for work and it was stuffy but nowhere near unbearably hot.
