It's always sad to see a marriage come to an end, but really this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

I have an unfinished scrawl somewhere about all the possible reasons why a lot of women in high places went along with the gender identity madness (and still do). One of those suggested reasons, alongside cowardice, misguided stupidity, acting 'cool', power-playing, positioning, rejection of childhood religion & mores and guilt, is internalised misogyny.

I do think that this kind of discussion is in the public interest where 'big wigs' like politicians and union leaders etc are concerned.

So far this thread has discussed whether Sturgeon consummated her marriage, whether she is gay, and even whether and how she may have conceived before miscarrying.
I am well aware of the extent of anger and hatred towards her policies. As a politician she might expect and accept those to be fair game for criticism and denigration. But when her politics is being linked to her sexuality, private and reproductive life, and people think it is ok to speculate and sneer over that, where have we ended up? Attacks on a woman’s personal and sexual life has historically been a way of attacking her political opinions, rather than arguing with those opinions on their own terms, and it feels like we’re back there. If that is ‘playing the sisterhood card’ then so be it.

Yes, it makes very uncomfortable reading. Her private life is none of anyone’s business, her policies are another thing. I think perhaps it’s the lying and duplicity that makes people angry. That extends to her private life because she isn’t trustworthy.

Surely it would be better to stay married. So that you can't be forced to testify against your spouse.

Not true in Scotland since 1984 as far as I know.

Have to say I agree with you. I usually stay off this board for precisely this reason. The language used around Nicola Sturgeon on this thread is disgusting.

Well obviously. Nobody with half a brain gives two hoots about anyone's sexuality in 2025. Nobody criticised Kez Dugdale, Ruth Davidson, David Mundell, Patrick Harvie etc etc etc purely because of their sexuality. It is no biggie, people just aren;t that bothered.

People do expect their leaders and elected politicians though to tell the truth. If anyone in a senior position like a cabinet minister, first minister, head of police scotland etc etc was found to be living a double life of pretending to be a happily married man/woman while simultaneously shagging around, or having multiple partners or actually being gay, then there would be the most almighty press stooshie (unless the person involved took out a gagging order on the press). Because actually, the issue for everyone is the lying and deceit.

AndSoFinally · 14/01/2025 08:04

Do we think the lavender background on the announcement was deliberate or just an amusing coincidence?!

JanuaryCrow · 14/01/2025 08:12

I think I take a very dim view of a politician living in a public, church-washed denial of being a lesbian while simultaneously promoting and passing legislation that has been extremely damaging to lesbians. It's deeply weird behaviour in this day and age where no-one actually gives a fuck if someone in their private lives is LGB or not.

I did notice the groom's lavender shirt and cravat. I assumed it was coincidence.

Exactly. Its all lies and deceit carefully managed to further Sturgeon's career. Even her miscarriage was used at an opportune time politically.

What @CharityShopChic and @JanuaryCrow said

Disingenuous politicians aren’t exempt from criticism because they’re female. And any kind of sisterhood card after what she’s done is laughable

Do they speak a different language in Scotland cos a lot of this I'm struggling to understand.

"Nat 5" French is "national 5", equivalent to GCSE in England

Sturgeon very much shot the bolt on any sisterhood card. She's still doubling down on "rapist" being a gender.

Pp is entirely correct. No one gives a shit whether she is gay or not, or how, if at all, she got pregnant.

I hate her for being a lying duplicitous individual whose policies and actions have ruined Scotland and driven wedges where there were none before.

Her actions show who she is and I have no respect for her and I don't see how I should just because she's a woman.

ThatAgileCoralBird · 14/01/2025 11:16

of course people can comment on her personal life. Especially when she updated on instagram. She did not need to tell us.
why now? Why the need to tell?

she does have form for not wanting any debate on her righteous opinions though.

as a pp suggested read robin macAlpine’s latest blog post

I wasn't aware that there were so many questions around the Salmond trial - that was right as Covid was kicking off as I remember and it just got lost in all the noise around that.

The main issue in Scotland is not new - the "establishment" is really small and everyone knows everyone. The head of the PF department will have been at school with a few MSPs, at Uni with all the top lawyers, goes to the same social clubs as a few MPs or members of the House of Lords. Swinney's brother was in charge of English at the SQA. People move between Scottish parliament, local Councils, jobs for the boys.

It's all so incestuous and there just isn't a big enough gene pool of talent to keep things impartial. Like the stooshie over your Sue Gray woman being the top civil servant to lead the enquiry into partygate and then straight into a senior position with the Labour party. That wouldn't even be comment worthy in Scotland becuase it happens all the time.

lovealongbath · 14/01/2025 11:59

Abouttoblow · 14/01/2025 00:23

Let's ge clear. Nicola Sturgeon is a disgrace to politics, to Scotland and, most importantly, a disgrace to women. The only person who has an issue with her sexuality is Nicola Sturgeon.
She made the decision to marry a gay man because she was ashamed of her sexuality. She went on to prioritise the demands of men over the rights of women. She stood in the Scottish Parliament and refused to call a rapist a man.
She deserves no compassion or understanding from anyone.

Never a truer word has been spoken!

she is a very dangerous woman!

ThatAgileCoralBird · 14/01/2025 12:11

You could argue she has poked the rumours by being very vocal about her ‘travelling squad of Scottish lesbians’

Areolaborealis · 14/01/2025 12:12

CharityShopChic · 13/01/2025 18:56

The thing is. There is no proof or evidence that Ms Sturgeon is not entirely heterosexual and anything else is just gossip. But there is a lot of gossip, and the gossip has been going on for YEARS.

There was a period when Sturgeon was FM, Kezia Dugdale (lesbian, married to Jenny Gilruth of the SNP) was in charge of Labour, and Ruth Davidson (lesbian, married to Jen WIlson since 2014) was leading the Conservatiives. There are many other out and proud MPs and MSPs in Scotland. Being gay, or bi just is not a thing worth commenting on in 2025 in Scotland and that is exactly as it should be.

So if there is a senior ex-politician who has been, in effect, living a lie in a sham marriage to disguise their sexuality that is pretty concerning and raises all sorts of issues. If that were the case, and I'm not saying it is or is not, then that is not a good position to be in for anyone.

Yes, I though we'd moved on from the old "career woman + trouser suit + short hair = lesbian" but clearly not.

@CharityShopChic I agree.

val mcdermid’s wife prof jo sharp was awarded the position of geographer royal of Scotland and her research interest are very gender based. I can’t understand why she has a French wikipedia page and not an English one?
