Analysis has been done into the pass rates of SQA exams, looking at the total cohort of S4 pupils and Nat 5s, rather than just the ones entered in the exams.

Only 40% of S4 kids passed Nat 5 maths. 25% have a pass in biology which they say is the most popular science. What a fucking shambles - no wonder they want to scrap Nat 5s, they can then pretend that everyone's a winner and give all S4s an "achievement certificate" irrespective of whether or not they would know a fraction if it came up and slapped them.

'Very worrying' pass rates for maths and science in Scotland

Education experts have found low attainment in subjects like maths and science in Scotland this year.

Permanent exclusion will just mean they are moved to another mainstream school to cause havoc there. They need to reopen the specialist units needed to give these kids a chance. They will be expensive but cheaper than court and prison costs that they may otherwise incur.

Well yes. Permanent exclusion should mean permanent removal to a pupil referral unit. The Scottish government ought to stick their hands in their pockets and create alternative provision, and would do if they were at all interested in protecting the education and wellbeing of our children. Which they are not so nothing will happen.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/clye1dyk4kwo Great news! A union finally protecting its members and pupils.

This is so sad.

It was a brilliant school 😔

Shame on any society and government who lets it get to that point.

There’s a wider societal impact too. If children don’t face any real adverse consequences- such as the shock of having to leave the school and people that are familiar to them / they have abused - then that carries through to adult life. No one who has said ‘no’ to them has any meaningful sanction if they don’t comply. The miscreant continues to be unhappy with no real boundaries and is free to continue to be violent …. And of course unlikely to face any real legal sanction if under 25.

What do politicians think happens to kids who don’t learn self control?

Of course.

No one is protecting the most vulnerable and then that passes into society also, as from primary there aren't any consequences for violence towards others. I've seen it from p1. Children being violently hurt and then having to sit in class with the person causing harm. This should never happen but is.

We need board of governors as this would allow parents to complain re violence, instead of complaints going nowhere essentially apart from the education head for that area.

And when in primary my child and their friends always said that the bully is allowed to kick and punch whoever he likes and the teachers do nothing. Speak to the teachers and they say that that’s not the case, harsh words are given to the bully, restorative convos blah blah blah but the rest of the class don’t know what because of privacy etc. That leaves a class full of primary kids thinking that a) there are no consequences and b) that no one cares if this kid beats them up.

If consequences aren’t seen to happen, the violence spreads because kids think that (quite often rightly) there are no consequences.

The wider societal damage is the traumatised, anxious kids who have to witness or are subjected to this behaviour. But no one seems to give a thought to anyone other than the bully.
