Aged 69. Not that old these days

Whatever your politics it’s definitely the end of an era

I didn't agree with his politics but I have a lot of respect for his passion and love of all things Scottish.

Condolences to his friends and family, 69 is no age at all nowadays.

helpfulperson · 12/10/2024 18:11

As mentioned that will be particularly hard on his wife who is in her mid eighties.

I don't think they had any children.

Well, I liked him. I don't usually have a reaction to deaths of famous people but I feel quite emotional. My parents were lifelong nationalists.

Me too. I admired him. Scotland has punched above it's weight in UK politics in the past 15 years, and that was his doing.

DoTheDinosaurStomp · 12/10/2024 18:22

Whether or not you agreed with his views, there's no denying he was a great politician. And a great force in Scottish politics in general.

He was 69, his wife 87, I'm sure she's surprised to have outlived him.

Probably right.
RIP, Sir.

Putfa · 12/10/2024 18:25

Saw him speak just before the election, incredibly charismatic and friendly even though I didn’t see eye to eye with him politics wise, but sadly wasn’t looking very healthy at the time. Feel very sorry for his friends and family.

Merrilydancing · 12/10/2024 18:26

Did not agree with his politics at all but he was a truly great politician and something Scotland hasn’t seen since he left mainstream politics.

GrouchyKiwi · 12/10/2024 18:26

I didn't realise his wife was that much older than him. That will be so hard on her.

Morwenscapacioussleeves · 12/10/2024 18:42

I was shocked when DH told me he was no age. I never agreed with his politics but he was a clever man & very skilled politician/orator.

I hope his loved ones are allowed the privacy to grieve him & he rests in peace.

TheShellBeach · 12/10/2024 18:44

Golly, he wasn't much older than me.

I'm sorry he's died. He had a lot of good policies.

awaynboilyurheid · 12/10/2024 18:44

Never voted SNP I believe in a United UK but sad to hear as he’s not that old.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 12/10/2024 18:46

I won’t mourn him but equally I’m not revelling in his death either. He was certainly a significant figure in Scottish politics. I was hoping he’d stir up more trouble for the SNP. Wonder what the mood is like Chez Sturgeon/Murrell this evening

Gingerkittykat · 12/10/2024 18:47

I'm surprisingly emotional reading this. No other Scottish politician has anything like his level of talent or skill.

RIP Big Eck.

(I wonder if Nicola will be releasing any kind of statement)

Ellmau · 12/10/2024 18:48

I thought he was older than 69.

MorrisZapp · 12/10/2024 18:51

He totally transcended party politics. I was a young Scottish nationalist back in the day, then I grew away from the movement and ended up a no voter in the indy ref. I never lost my respect and affection for Alex Salmond, a truly passionate politician and a hugely gregarious personality.

Who will replace these titans? It's embarrassing watching the current crop pay their tributes, they couldn't rouse a nursery school never mind adult voters.

Some of my family met him over the years and he was full of warmth, patter, and yes, hugs. He's from a bygone era and perhaps it's good to see modern politicians by much more mindful of personal boundaries but I'm old enough to love a big squeeze from a kind and respectful stranger.

Good night Big Eck.

BESTAUNTB · 12/10/2024 18:52

Ahh his poor wife. Bless her.

Getonwitit · 12/10/2024 18:55

Such a shock. Not my politics but i admire the man that he was. He will be greatly missed.

MorrisZapp · 12/10/2024 18:56

'yon big laddie' my gran called him 😭
