Aged 69. Not that old these days

Whatever your politics it’s definitely the end of an era

Yes I saw that on the Times website. Doesn't appear to have been picked up by the BBC or Guardian yet.

Certainly a titan of Scottish politics - quite a shock, as you say, 69 isn't very old these days.

GrouchyKiwi · 12/10/2024 17:38

Is on BBC now.

It is indeed the end of an era.

SirChenjins · 12/10/2024 17:40

Watching it on the news now.

Can’t say I’ll shed a tear but definitely the end of an era.

Ozanj · 12/10/2024 17:40

Oh dear. I presume he had a stroke / heart attack. So horrible

PollyDactyl · 12/10/2024 17:40

Oh my goodness.

The end of an era.

Condolences to his family.

Shoobidowhop · 12/10/2024 17:41

Oh gosh was not expecting that, I probably thought he was younger than that.

angelopal · 12/10/2024 17:51

Definitely end of an era. He was a good politician whether or not you agreed with his politics

End of an era is what I just said to my partner. He was certainly a marmite figure but defo a clever politician and a titan of Scottish politics. Wonder what Alba will do now….

Silvers11 · 12/10/2024 17:56

I didn't like him at all - but that doesn't mean that I don't feel sorry for him and his friends and family. A huge shock for all concerned.

Why would you think that, it's reported he fell ill during a speech, why be so disrespectful to two families have just lost someone.

motheronthedancefloor · 12/10/2024 17:57

I didn't agree with him on the future of the UK but there's no denying he was a good politican and speaker. It'll be interesting now, that's for sure.

SidekickSylvia · 12/10/2024 17:58

Condolences to his family and friends. I didn't really agree with a lot of his politics, but he seemed to genuinely care about others, rare in today's politicians.

redtrain123 · 12/10/2024 17:59

69 . That’s so young. Hadn’t even reached his three score and ten.

Condolences to his family.

walkingmycatnameddog · 12/10/2024 17:59

69, young to die - had a stressful life

motheronthedancefloor · 12/10/2024 17:59

I actually thought he was older...maybe cause he had an older wife.

Igmum · 12/10/2024 18:01

Oh my that's such a shock. Not sure the Alba party will survive without him

southsidegal · 12/10/2024 18:03

Really shocking. He's older than I realised, but was giving a speech today and tweeted 3 hours ago. Didn't agree with his politics at all but he was a force to be reckoned with. RIP.

Yes, with false allegations, no support, sturgeon lies. Condolences to his family.

hattie43 · 12/10/2024 18:05

Don't be stupid. That was a lady in her 20s as you well know.

SassK · 12/10/2024 18:07

I was a supporter of the SNP (and of Independence) during his tenure (I haven't supported any of his successors).

He was an outstanding politician; there was no politician he couldn't run rings round. Very sad news.

RIP Alex Salmond.

SunsetSkylane · 12/10/2024 18:09

Wow, that's shocked me!

I was a big Indy supporter back in the day, and although I felt his personality was actually too strong and overshadowed the movement somewhat, you can't deny his influence in Scottish politics.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 12/10/2024 18:09

That's is very young. How sad for his friends and family.

Awrite · 12/10/2024 18:11

Well, I liked him. I don't usually have a reaction to deaths of famous people but I feel quite emotional. My parents were lifelong nationalists.
