Glasgow Uni timetable nightmare

dementedpixie · 29/08/2024 13:05

Ds had been accepted to do computer science at Glasgow uni but is finding it really difficult to construct a timetable as his classes all seem to clash and he fears he will be leaving the house at 7am and not getting home until 7pm each day which isn't what he expected (he will be commuting from north lanarkshire). Think he wished he had chosen Strathclyde like his sister did!

The website is clunky and slow and he doesn't seem to be getting anywhere. He has to fit in lectures and labs and tutorials for 3 subjects and it's just not happening.

Is anyone else having similar issues and can commiserate or work out the best way to help him?

That sounds useless! I’ve no experience of Glasgow, but at my uni the system should automatically sort out a timetable with no clashes. (And we complain about it being not fit for purpose, but Glasgow sounds worse.) He should have an advisor--could he contact them for some advice on how to negotiate the system?

Lougle · 29/08/2024 15:19

Computer Science is listed as one of the courses that is exempt from self-enrollment by Glasgow Uni. https://www.gla.ac.uk/myglasgow/registry/enrolment/#listofexemptionsfromself-enrolment

That's good info from @Lougle above. My DD is going and has been self-enrolling. Agree that website is clunky and slow and doesn't tell you until the end that there is some kind of clash and then you have to go to the start again. We eventually go her timetable sorted though. Good luck.
Edited to say that she's not on one of the exempt courses so we managed to do it eventually. DD is also commuting so timetabling was quite important!

He is also doing maths and statistics. Will this be the case if he's doing the 3 subjects?

Oh no idea, sorry!

dementedpixie · 29/08/2024 18:30

Ds also says SIT is for Singapore Institute of Technology so not relevant to him

I can commiserate. I remember my DS2 complaining in 1st year (he too was a commuting student and had an evening job). If its any consolation he was so much wiser for 2nd year (helping out his friends). He used to set his alarm to be on it when it opened. I think he had two screens going (or had made notes so he knew whether overlappinwg rather than trial and error).

There is usually some movement with people switching out of subjects after a few weeks. My son managed to switch to a better time for one subject. DS2s course head was sympathetic to commuting students so you could try appealing to them.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 29/08/2024 20:16

My son is doing the exact same course it sounds. MSci maths and computing science and stats as his 3rd subject. He was going nuts with it but finally managed to speak to an actual person who sorted it for him and it all seems fine now.

dementedpixie · 29/08/2024 21:04

How did he find someone to talk to?

OP posts:
ThatsNotMyTeen · 29/08/2024 21:06

I found some email addresses and phone numbers online, he emailed and someone finally called him back. Hang on I’ll see if I can find the screenshot. Also I am sure there was something on the uni page that if you haven’t managed to enrol by 2 weeks before you can raise a help desk request

ThatsNotMyTeen · 29/08/2024 21:09

Here you go

Thanks @ThatsNotMyTeen

Well he thought he'd sorted it but when he went to submit it said classes were closed/full. He's getting quite down about it now. How did your dcs issues get sorted @ThatsNotMyTeen ?

OP posts:
ThatsNotMyTeen · 30/08/2024 15:34

someone finally called him back after all the emails he sent, his name was Gethin but I don’t know a surname.

has he sent the help desk request mentioned on the Uni pages, I think given it’s only 2 weeks to go now that maybe an idea.

it just seems a really rubbish system and web page. My son was also worrying about ending up with crap times as he is also commuting and works x I hope your son is sorted soon.

dementedpixie · 16/09/2024 23:34

Just an update:
After getting stressed out and getting nowhere even with help ds decided to go through clearing and is now doing computing and maths at strathclyde where they have a manageable timetable that they provide for you.

It wasn't easy getting Glasgow uni to do what they needed to put him into the clearing system so he could accept the strathclyde place but after plenty of emails, online chat and even phone calls he was eventually able to sort it out just in the nick of time last Thursday.

He has been to an induction today at strathclyde with more visits to follow in the next week. It will be less travel for him too

Good that he's resolved it. Strathclyde is a good institution.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 17/09/2024 10:02

That’s good he’s managed to get a place at Strathclyde. My son was talking about doing the same if he hadn’t got his timetable resolved! I’m sure he’ll be happy there, my son’s best friend is doing maths and computing there too. And an easier commute from a lot of places as you say. I hope he’s fed back to Glasgow, their loss of a great student

CompSciMum · 17/09/2024 13:45

I am sorry I missed this thread when it was originally posted.

My DS is starting Glasgow doing exactly the same course as you mentioned @dementedpixie. We had all the same issues and DH and I thought we were all doing something wrong.

This is clearly an issue. I'm pleased your son has a solution but shocked that he felt he had to move University.

I hope he has a great Freshers Week and loves his course at Strathclyde

stuckasachildagain · 07/08/2025 16:41

Hi I know it’s a year ago but was just l wonder how quickly your dc got their UGID so they can accept the offer and register for their classes? Dd got a conditional offer which was confirmed on Tuesday as being accepted on the course but no further information. Any help appreciated . Thanks

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 08/08/2025 16:25

My daughter hasn’t had any further info either. She’s doing Scots Law and Politics

GreenSweeties · 08/08/2025 16:29

I think registration for new undergraduates doesn't open until August 18th for most subjects so even if you have your GUID now then you can't sign up for classes until them. Good that are on top of this unlike one of mine who ended up with really rubbish time slots.

stuckasachildagain · 08/08/2025 20:32

Thanks for the reassurance. Glad it’s not just us waiting and slightly confused!

howdoibegin · 20/08/2025 21:48

Just wanted to agree re the clunkiness of the Glasgow enrolment portal - really slow and not-very-user-friendly! My teen got through it and managed to enrol but by god it was a painful process. How can such a top uni have such a rubbish online system? Sheesh.

haha! Have just realised that this was a resurrected zombie thread so my comment was totally unnecessary!

It is a terrible terrible website - apparently they spent £22million to have it built!!!
