Exam results 2024

Thought I'd get started on the exam results thread as we have a month to go!
I think, as a parent, I'm more nervous about this year (Highers) than last year (N5) as the Higher results will influence university applications.
DD tells me she's not thinking about her exams, but then she throws into conversation how 'super smart' her friends are and how they will probably get As, and also has asked me if our postcode is eligible for widening access (it isn't) so it appears to me that she IS thinking / worrying about her results.
We do have a holiday coming up which will hopefully help us all relax.
How are other kids doing?

Yes, she has never managed to finish an exam, despite getting extra time. I think she’s done great. She still has everything to play for in S6. She’s learnt so much more about how to study/organise herself/whats expected in S5.

Yes they will be all prepared for S6 now, and know what is expected of them. DS going to give it his all for H Spanish in his final year, he say it is his "fun" Higher for S6😂. He has less pressure now that he got As in the subjects he loves and also requires to study at university if he wants to go ahead on that route.

Good luck with whatever subjects your DD is doing in S6 too, lots for them all to look forward to 😊

Thank you @Vettrianofan I have spoken to him properly now, given him a hug. He is going to shower to wake up properly and then we can talk about what he will do next.

EsmeShelby · 06/08/2024 11:05

5 A's. I can breathe now.

That's the spirit😊. Lots of positivity for your DS. It may feel like it, but it's not the end of the world and there are so many options now for our young people.

Things will work out for the best.

Very proud of my DD. She's autistic and has anxiety and was a serious school refuser in the last couple of years. Attendance around 20-25% on every report but it honestly felt like less than that.

She got an A in Nat 5 Maths. B in Nat 5 English.

Failed Nat 5 Fashion despite the fact she was going in to try and finish that off but must have missed something I guess.

And she got Nat 4 Geography despite hating the subject.

College is hopefully the next step here. She's had an unconditional offer for level 6 Art but only for the waiting list as the course is full, although there's a chance they'll run a second course. She's also applied for coding and acting courses and has interviews for them both soon.

Completely agree, it's just that initial sadness and disappointment. I know it will all work out.

So have the blank emails been followed up with real emails?

Hapagirl48 · 06/08/2024 11:10

@Tarkan That's amazing!!

birdsoeking · 06/08/2024 11:12

DS has failed practical cookery after a prelim result of a C. I take it an appeal might be worth doing? I’d like to speak to his teacher about it to see what happened first but that will need to wait until next week when school is back.

That is great! Nat 5 maths and English will be very helpful for employment later. Fingers crossed for the good college courses.

My son can’t stop crying 😭 my heart is hurting.

It will all work out. Keep positive for him and let him see there are other options to look into. Lots of helplines available this morning to speak to someone for advice on next steps❤️

Same. I need to get DS to speak with chemistry teacher but I suspect you're in with a good chance too of attempting an appeal. So frustrating for the DC who got passes rest of the year.

do the school find out the breakdown of the results? My child said the exam went really well, but this is their only B. He’s wondering in the assignment was sent away properly, as his teacher was quite scatty

These things do tend to be checked and double checked before the SQA uplift. (Triple checked in the case of a scatty teacher!)

QueryA · 06/08/2024 11:31

DD got a 2nd email (after the blank fiasco) about 9.45. She's done very well, we are very proud of her.

It would have been nice if there was some sort of acknowledgement/apology from SQA that they fucked up. I'm really annoyed with myself as I thought it was text or email when I helped her sign up for results, so just checked the email box. Turns out I should have checked both. Anyway at least she didn't have to wait for the post and can join in with her friends in discussing their results.

Iggii · 06/08/2024 11:33

Very unlikely to end up with a B if assignment hadn't gone in.
I worry about appeals maybe leading to a lower grade rather than a higher one!

DS can't really get lower than a D so it's really a no brainer for him to appeal.

I got a D for Higher English years ago (I am a dinosaur) and the teacher appealed on my behalf and I got a C. I know its a completely different system now but worth a shot especially if you have nothing to lose!

Had DS got a B and wanted to appeal I would have said be careful as the grade can go down.

Seaside1234 · 06/08/2024 11:42

@Tarkan brilliant, well done her. We have a friend in a similar position with Highers, it's not easy. English and Maths at good grades is a great outcome, and will hopefully give her confidence

Vettrianofan · 06/08/2024 11:42

Well done to all the young ones on trying their absolute best and passing Nat5s and Highers/Advanced Highers especially those with additional needs 👏

Drinthehouses · 06/08/2024 11:55

My DD has got an unexpected D in her AH English (she got A at Higher) . She’s very disappointed as she thought her dissertation essay had been good. Thankfully she has an unconditional offer at an excellent Uni so the result doesn’t really matter in the overall scheme of things but for her own peace of mind, she’d like to see if some marks have been missed somewhere (unlikely I know).
Well done to everyone else.

Tarkan · 06/08/2024 12:01

Thanks all. I'm very very proud today. English and Maths were the two subjects I really wanted her to do well in. Whatever she chooses to do now she's at least got those as a good foundation to build on.

I've always said to my kids that education isn't always school and university and whatever they do, there's always a chance to learn but getting English and Maths is important for a good base whatever path they choose in education or work.

I've been through it myself with the pressure we had from school to do well. I left school with 7 Standard Grades, all 1s and 2s, then 7 Highers (2 As and 5 Bs) then ended up dropping out of uni twice. I just couldn't cope with it and ended up having my kids fairly young and focusing on them. When DD was born I started a degree with the OU and I finally finished it this year and I'll be graduating in October with a 2:1 in English Literature and Creative Writing. Something I thought many times I would never manage.

Sorry for derailing the thread a bit. 🙈

Amelanchier · 06/08/2024 12:11

I had to wait for the post, then opened it for DS when he called me from sport camp just now. 7 As in his Nat 5s. So so proud that his hard work paid off especially for one of the subjects that he absolutely hated and was predicted a C.

weebarra · 06/08/2024 12:52

Our post has been and nothing. DS1 is at work but I've messaged him to phone school asap. Don't know when he'll get the message though. Argh!

LynG19 · 06/08/2024 13:25

My son got bccc he is gutted is it really that bad ?

motheronthedancefloor · 06/08/2024 13:31

DD is feeling a bit better as apparently none of her friends are happy either.
Two friends who've always been straight As throughout N5 and Higher got a mix of Cs and Ds.
One friend got AABDD and is upset.
A fourth friend was at work, got phoned by his mum with his results, he made the mistake of putting her on speaker, where she berated him for being a 'disappointment' for not getting all As llike his sister.
