Thought I'd get started on the exam results thread as we have a month to go!
I think, as a parent, I'm more nervous about this year (Highers) than last year (N5) as the Higher results will influence university applications.
DD tells me she's not thinking about her exams, but then she throws into conversation how 'super smart' her friends are and how they will probably get As, and also has asked me if our postcode is eligible for widening access (it isn't) so it appears to me that she IS thinking / worrying about her results.
We do have a holiday coming up which will hopefully help us all relax.
How are other kids doing?

DS1 has finally got out of bed and also done badly. His cousin just got 5 As at Higher.

He's really disappointed, even though he wasn't counting on results for next steps.

I'm sad for him.

BCCC for DD. She’s upstairs crying.

DS2 did really badly. He didn't pass the highers he needed for his college course. It is not a surprise, he did no work. I am disappointed in him, but also for him. I need him to get his arse out of bed and consider his options though.

Keep calm. Tell him you are proud of him no matter what. I got a BCCCC years ago (got a uni place through clearing, and gained a degree all the same as someone with five A Higher passes), yet my DS got AACD today. He did better than I ever could. He got As in the two subjects he loved, the C was in a subject he crashed (H Biology ) and he failed H Chemistry. He is not resitting. Taking H Spanish in S6 so is going to work hard to get a B for this to over compensate for the Chemistry result.

My point is there are other options. Don't despair. Your DS will find his way❤️

Blackbirdinfinity · 06/08/2024 10:05

do the school find out the breakdown of the results? My child said the exam went really well, but this is their only B. He’s wondering in the assignment was sent away properly, as his teacher was quite scatty

So does the school find out what marks they got for the paper and what marks they got for the coursework element (which was sent off for marking)?

Good grief, these are amazing results. All passes!!! ❤️❤️

theferry · 06/08/2024 10:10

@Vettrianofan she thought we would shout at her ☹️. She’s badly affected by dyslexia. She didn’t finish any of the exam papers. I think she’s done bloody amazing, given how much it slows her down. But she needs B’s for uni. She’s into S6 now so she can still have another shot at them.

motheronthedancefloor · 06/08/2024 10:15

This maybe explains our disappointment today. SQA trying to get back to pre pandemic levels is just unfair.

No post yet - no word from dc either not sure if there'll have been a text. However, I did have a very detailed dream that I was convinced was real in which he got what we're hoping for - SO sad to wake up and realise it wasn't real life!!

Still waiting. Not sure if DC is awake.

Turned out DC set an alarm at 8am to look at results, was happy with them so went back to sleep without telling anyone! I had been awake half the night and was holding off in case they had to work through the results, and they had just been sleeping…

Please don't compare!

I'm not comparing. But he is. And the horrible in-laws will be for sure.

DD very disappointed. A B in higher History despite being a strong A student all year. Interesting to see how the exam pass rate has dropped. This cohort have had it all - the first to do assignments after COVID with no practice at Nat 5s and the first 2 years of school messed up. I hope all your young people go on to do well and be happy on whatever path they take.

Hapagirl48 · 06/08/2024 10:39

Well done to everyone! My friend’s son got a blank email for results but then an email from his first choice uni to say congratulations. I’m really disgusted at the SQA for this. They’ve only had 3 months to prepare. My DDs got their results through okay. My DD1 had a super hard time in high school with her MH and almost crashed out in S3 but persevered until S6 and A and B in AH and A in Higher more than meeting her condition for uni. I can’t believe it. My DD2 got 7 As and a C in nat 5 despite having dyslexia. I’m so proud of them but told them the whole time I would be proud of them whatever.

Yes. My DS wasn’t going to bother appealing his unexpected low grade last year but the school gave us his paper marks and he couldn’t understand how he got so low on one paper (less than half marks) when he knew he had written a good essay. He got upgraded on appeal.

motheronthedancefloor · 06/08/2024 10:45

When do appeals open?

Typical SQA. Not even an apology, just an acknowledgement that there's a problem 😡

motheronthedancefloor · 06/08/2024 10:45

When do appeals open?

Today. Only takes a moment to enter an appeal and they can do it themselves.

Non-priority appeals may not come back until 31st October.

DS said he used every last minute he had with his extra time allocated for the H Chemistry paper 2 and he still struggled to get everything written down 😔

I feel bad for your DD, of course you will be absolutely proud of her. She's achieved these brilliant passes against all the odds. Children with additional needs have such a struggle as it is.

Thank you. You have given me some hope it's worth a shot. Glad your DS was successful on appealing🙌

Yes, she has never managed to finish an exam, despite getting extra time. I think she’s done great. She still has everything to play for in S6. She’s learnt so much more about how to study/organise herself/whats expected in S5.
