Exam results 2024

Thought I'd get started on the exam results thread as we have a month to go!
I think, as a parent, I'm more nervous about this year (Highers) than last year (N5) as the Higher results will influence university applications.
DD tells me she's not thinking about her exams, but then she throws into conversation how 'super smart' her friends are and how they will probably get As, and also has asked me if our postcode is eligible for widening access (it isn't) so it appears to me that she IS thinking / worrying about her results.
We do have a holiday coming up which will hopefully help us all relax.
How are other kids doing?

Nat 5s

A in English, B in maths - the two subjects we paid for tutors in. Cs for everything else.

Given that he failed most of his prelims that is better than we were expecting.

Hoping this is the kick up the bahookie he needs for S5.

StrictlyPrue · 06/08/2024 13:41

Love this @Tarkan . My daughter struggles massively also and school has been a real struggle for her daily. She was convinced she would fail today as to quote her "she fails at everything" so our main hope for her was just some passes to boost her own confidence. She got B, C, C, D in her Nat5's and 2 passes at Nat4 so she is over the moon as are we. She has two part time jobs, one which she just loves and is in real creative environment and she says she learns more at those than she ever does at school. Well done to your DD and everyone else's today

TeenTraumaTrials · 06/08/2024 13:48

Postie just came so DS got 5 As and 2 Bs at Nat 5 - he's a bit disappointed as one of his Bs is English but otherwise he's delighted to have avoided a C in Physics and amazed to have got an A in Chemistry.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 06/08/2024 13:59

DS got 5 As and a B. Delighted for him as he has missed so much of school with mental health issues.

Well done to everyone and sympathy with those that are disappointed.

Sturmundcalm · 06/08/2024 14:09

DS did get a follow up email about 9.40ish with his results, and the post confirmed!

Someone was asking about assignment marks - his were broken out to show exam versus practical marks on the full results. He is planning on checking with the school a couple of his as they are lower marks than expected but will see how things go.

He failed (F) maths but got ABBC and is safely into college so we're pleased and relieved in this household. Hope everyone else's plans for this year come together.

I’m sure you all know about appeals but I thought I’d post this anyway just in case.

SQA have this morning launched their Appeals service 2024. This is a free service which is available to all candidates who may have concerns about a grade or grades. The service is open until

  • Tuesday 13 August at 11:59pm for priority appeals
  • Tuesday 27 August at 11:59pm for all other appeals

Your appeal is a priority appeal if you have a conditional place at university or college, or in training or employment that depends on your grade.

If you appeal your grade, a senior appointee will carry out a marking review of your SQA-marked assessments.

This is not a re-mark.

A marking review checks that:

  • ·- all parts of your SQA-assessments have been marked
  • ·- the marking is in line with national standards
  • ·- the marks given for each answer have been totalled correctly; and
  • ·- the correct result has been entered on our system.

Please note that after being reviewed, your result could stay the same, go up or go down.

If you wish to appeal, or you wish to find out more about the service, please click here for the Appeals service 2024 page of SQA website. Your child’s school will be notified of any appeals raised via this page.

does 'external assessment' on the certificate mean assignment? Cause the marks are identical to the final mark so I'm confused as she was told her assignments should get a higher grade than what she got overall.

I don't think you get any breakdown of results on the certificate. That info just goes to schools?
Dc has for a D in one of his Highers - I know that's a fail at Highwe, but it's still on the certificate - is it of any use to him?

Yes I think the numbers on the certificate aren’t a breakdown are they? It’s hard to understand but I think they are just repeating the result a number of times.

BritishShorthair23 · 06/08/2024 15:33

Well done to all our kids today! They had a lot of disruption to their education due to lockdown so they should all be proud of themselves.

I rarely post but so proud of my DS. He got 3 A’s, 2 B’s and a D for Nat 5. He’s ASD, started S1 during covid and it was really difficult to get him to engage in homeschooling. But the last 2 years he has knuckled down and done his absolute best so to see how far he’s come is amazing.

cushionfiend · 06/08/2024 15:39

@Iggii Are you sure a D doesn't count?

I have been awarded a grade D - what does this mean?
National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher courses are awarded at grades A - D. If you receive a grade D result this means you have been awarded the course and you scored between 40 and 49% in the course assessment.

Iggii · 06/08/2024 15:43

Thank you @cushionfiend I'm really confused - we have also said a D was a narrow fail, but I see what you've posted and am confused - you're awarded the course but you don't have a pass at Higher? Hopefully I can get more info. He doesn't need it for next year but would be made up to have achieved something

Threeboysadogacatandakitten · 06/08/2024 15:45

ACD for advanced Higher’s here. We are all ok with that really. I will get him to ask the teacher if it’s worth appealing the D. It was computing science. He crashed the Higher last year and got an A so had hoped for a C. He had unconditional University places from last year so it’s not important but a C would look better!

motheronthedancefloor · 06/08/2024 15:47

Its a pass at Higher but they got less than half the marks and the reality is that I have never seen a university or college course mention accepting D grades in their entry requirements. They may do so, but they don't SAY so.
SQA confuse things by insisting its not a fail when the bodies that matter clearly think differently, hence many of my DDs friends being so upset.

I am curious to find out if DS's D is closer to 49% or 40% and whether its worth appealing for the C.

Vettrianofan · 06/08/2024 16:06

I personally see D as a fail but obviously they scored something on the papers and got awarded for the effort made. In the real world unfortunately it doesn't really count for much. A C means something at least.

8misskitty8 · 06/08/2024 16:15

Disappointed Dd here.
She got D’s for 3 of her highers. School predicted 2 band 3’s (Upper B) and a band 5 (upper C.) for them.
last year she got B’s for them at national 5 and was a couple of marks of an A for 2 of them.
Think we’ll appeal. I know it’s just a check of points getting added correctly but last year like a poster previously said there was some mistakes made.
So fingers crossed for her.

We're not all interested in getting accepted into uni though, I just want it as a sign of his achievement this year.

KielderWater · 06/08/2024 16:23

I think whether Ds count for anything depend on the level you are working at. Highers probably not so much, but if you got a selection of Ds and Cs at Nat 5 then they show a level study and ability above Nat 4. If you are looking at employment at that level then an employer would potentially take that extra breadth of study as a positive over not having them.

KielderWater · 06/08/2024 16:25

40% is the same as a pass mark at many universities.

LoopyGremlin · 06/08/2024 16:27

A Grade D does carry 15 UCAS tariff points so is not worthless.

LoopyGremlin · 06/08/2024 16:28

That's at Higher.

I'm not really sure how a personal feeling is relevant to whether someone has a higher or not? I mean, for myself I thought anything less than an A was worthless! But I am aware (and thankful!) that that is not how the SQA categorises their qualifications!

Definitely worth appealing then if she has Ds. My DS is appealing for his D, hopefully it will become C. Depends on how bad it is.

Think you are perhaps misunderstanding what I am getting at. Yes, a D shows a level of effort but isn't widely recognised like a ABC are.

It's not a criticism, especially since I have also had a D (changed on appeal to a C) in my own school Highers!
