Exam results 2024

Thought I'd get started on the exam results thread as we have a month to go!
I think, as a parent, I'm more nervous about this year (Highers) than last year (N5) as the Higher results will influence university applications.
DD tells me she's not thinking about her exams, but then she throws into conversation how 'super smart' her friends are and how they will probably get As, and also has asked me if our postcode is eligible for widening access (it isn't) so it appears to me that she IS thinking / worrying about her results.
We do have a holiday coming up which will hopefully help us all relax.
How are other kids doing?

3As 2Bs here he is upset was hoping for 5 As but 4 definitely. English (not a massive surprise) and physics (more surprised and he’s doing AH physics so that’s more of an upset) Still a very good set of results but he looks so miserable. Lot will depend on how his friends do as to how he feels now…

As and Bs are fantastic! One of mine got a D, so will need to ask for a marking review...

DD gutted. BBBCC
She hoped for 2 As in her favourite subjects but got a B and a C. lots of tears.
Not sure what to do now re S6 choices and uni plans (she will need a few As Bs)
I dont know how to cheer her up.

They are all passes! One of mine got a D...honestly, getting passes is a win! We are going to ask for a marking review as he has nothing to lose.

5 highers is incredible. A few more next year and aim for As and she’ll have an amazing set of results.

shame she’s so upset but really, I would be happy if one of my pupils achieved this! She passed every one!!

Exactly!

Kyogo67 · 06/08/2024 08:58

4 As and a B for Maths at Higher here.
Think she would have loved 5 As but still amazing results and should be good enough for uni applications

HigherUp · 06/08/2024 09:00

My DD is disappointed in her History Higher B - she’s been stellar A* all the way. She does realise she got confused on one of her questions but thought all her other answers and assignment would pull her mark up. Not sure if it’s worth an SQA review as it’s basically just a re-tot up of the numbers? The fact she got a B in Chemistry is amazing - her teacher was predicting a low C but she worked hard to get her head round things. It’s sad when they’ve done so well but are disappointed because it’s not straight As - we’re immensely proud of her.

Twix42 · 06/08/2024 09:03

Blank email here.
Very disappointing.
He won't have a clutch of A&Bs I just desperately don't want him to give himself a hard time. 😞 And this is just prolonging the agony....

Bluepeach · 06/08/2024 09:04

University place for Law at Edinburgh confirmed on UCAS but still no results from SQA . . .

For those considering appeal, last years statistics on success:

Appeal outcomes by qualification level 2023:
At qualification level, the proportion of appeal requests resulting in an upgrade was highest for Advanced Higher and lowest for National 5.

  • For National 5, 1,475 (8.2%) of the 18,020 appeal requests resulted in an upgrade, fewer than five (<0.05%) resulted in a downgrade and 16,540 (91.8%) resulted in no change.
  • For Higher, 2,180 (11.1%) of the 19,675 appeal requests resulted in an upgrade, fewer than five (<0.05%) resulted in a downgrade and 17,490 (88.9%) resulted in no change.
  • For Advanced Higher, 320 (16.5%) of the 1,955 appeal requests resulted in an upgrade, fewer than five (0.1%) resulted in a downgrade and 1,630 (83.5%) resulted in no change.

So hard for the ones who're still waiting. My colleague who is one of the staff on the helpline says that the guidance is now just to wait for the post, but totally appreciate that the ones who've signed up will be on tenterhooks.

motheronthedancefloor · 06/08/2024 09:15

Thanks everyone, no matter what I say to DD, she's just not happy.

Well done
I understand the disappointment in history but that's a brilliant improvement for chemistry (spoken as someone who studied lots of chemistry at uni)!

Give her time and keep reminding her how fab she is!

Good or not so good?

QueryA · 06/08/2024 09:20

Blank email here. Fucking SQA. DD is quite calm (I think) I am absolutely raging. We don’t get our post here until afternoon. Honestly is there NOTHING we can do properly. 😡😡😡

(I’m venting on here - not letting DD know I’m so annoyed )

So Sorry.
Rant away. xx
Edit - son's school has just said the emails will be reissued in an hour or so. DS got text but feel for others awaiting info.

Bluepeach · 06/08/2024 09:27

Still no text or email but got print out on request from the school office and all grade 1 - what does that mean? I thought it was letter grades for Higher?!

Rae36 · 06/08/2024 09:28

Mine are both still in bed so no stress or anxiety here.

One has just finished s6 and already written off his chances of uni (he's probably right) so he doesn't seem to care at all. I'd love him to pass Higher Maths, this is his second go. Apart from that I don't suppose it really matters to him. He's got a job and he's happy.

Younger one is waiting for higher results from S5. He was out till 4am last night so won't surface for a while. He's been working all summer with a local plumber and would happily do that for life so he's also not particularly bothered about his results.

I've been banging around hoovering outside their bedroom doors but no movement.

I realise our household is a bit weird in our total lack of stress. Hugs to everyone who's finding today tricky.

TeenTraumaTrials · 06/08/2024 09:30

So sorry for those of you whose DCs have received blank emails - that must just be awful. I would like to think the coming changes will make things better but it's going to be the same people doing the same jobs just under a different name.

We are waiting for the postie for DSs Nat 5 results. Could be late afternoon going by the past few weeks post. Hoping for As and Bs (possibly a C for physics).

Pleasegivemeyourwisdom · 06/08/2024 09:34

Not good 😌

theferry · 06/08/2024 09:35

DD won’t tell me. It’s obviously bad.

Presumably all A band 1?

ditalini · 06/08/2024 09:37

Ds1 didn't get a text which was torture (he'd been complaining that SQA had been sending him daily reminder emails even afer he'd signed up so I suspect something had gone wrong with the text registration).

However at back of 9 he got a message from UCAS confirming he'd met his condition for his first choice so huge sigh of relief as that's all that matters this year thankfully.

Hope everything works out for all our dcs in the end, whatever route that looks like. I didn't find my way to my career until I was 30, dh was 48 and has the best job satisfaction of anyone I know.

LadyDanburysHat · 06/08/2024 09:39

DS2 did really badly. He didn't pass the highers he needed for his college course. It is not a surprise, he did no work. I am disappointed in him, but also for him. I need him to get his arse out of bed and consider his options though.
