Hogmanay

What's your Hogmanay plans Scotsnetters?

We are having all the family round and my mums making a giant steak pie and clootie dumpling followed by booze and board games

Sad to see there's no Scot Squad / Only An Excuse on the tellybox. Just something called 'Queen of the Year'. Will this do the job?

Anyone going into town or to parties?

PS if you are a Hogmanay hater there are other threads

I think Hogmanay is so over rated. Almost noone I know does anything. It used to be a huge thing.

I'll be having a few proseccos & going to bed

Oh dear. You didn't read my last sentence.

None the less happy new year to you @Redglitter

Blimey

We're heading to PILs as usual. We got them a DVD player for Christmas and some old school Hogmanay DVDs:

The Steamie
Scotch & Wry
The Rev I Am Jolly

The DC are making a 'first foot' basket - they go out the back door and knock on the front!

MIL has steak pie on the menu for the first. We're hoping for frosty weather to walk the dog rather than dreich!

BigBoysDontCry · 27/12/2023 15:37

We usually have a quiet one, watch a movie, have a few drinks and snacks and then usually we go into the street with all the neighbours at the bells to watch the fireworks.

No fireworks this year so I think it will just be bed after the bells. Nothing like the hogmanay events of my childhood in the 70s.

Hope you have a fab party OP.

BigBoysDontCry · 27/12/2023 15:40

We usually do steak pie on the 1st. Stovies on the 31st. My mum used to also do a pot of tattie soup and a tray of tripe for hogmanay as you'd have have the neighbourhood round at times. Often a party in your house while you were at someone else's 😂😂

IfColoursHatedMe · 27/12/2023 15:48

Neither of us drink so our tradition for a few years now is drive to a high point just outside of town, turn on radio Scotland, see if we can spot the Edinburgh fireworks across the Forth, then stop and first-foot my mum on the way home. It's a lovely quiet way to see in the bells.

That sounds absolutely amazing.

We usually have a quiet Bells at home with family including mil, however she is dying and in her final days so this year will be totally different.

Happy new year to you OP

Motheranddaughter · 27/12/2023 15:55

Having a party on Hogmanay ,really looking forward to it
Then having Mum ,sis and family round for dinner on NYD

Heyhoherewegoagain · 27/12/2023 15:59

Unfortunately I’m an emergency services worker so will be working till 12! I’ll see the bells in my car !

Illpickthatup · 27/12/2023 16:03

We got married on Hogmanay last year so this year will be our first anniversary. We're just having a few friends round for a drink and snacks.

Rollerboots · 27/12/2023 16:06

Our neighbours have an open house party every year, can walk across the road.
a great mix of neighbours (we are a big friend group anyway) and others, food, lots of booze and always ends with some karaoke. Kids come too and they have a ball too.
I’m not a fan of trying to make Hogmanay a big night, and this is the perfect mix of doing something but with little effort and close to home so we can stay will the small hours or head home whenever.

stepintochristmas1 · 27/12/2023 16:27

BBC Scotland 10pm Still game , 10 30pm Scotch and wry .

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 27/12/2023 16:30

I’m a Scot abroad and will first foot my ain door with a tear in ma eye!

I miss home very much at Hogmanay.

OllyBJolly · 27/12/2023 17:47

Nice dinner with just me and DH, bubbly for the bells then out on the street to watch fireworks (if not cancelled due to wind and rain).

Always get a bit emotional on Hogmanay- always a big deal in our family.

happy anniversary @Illpickthatup and Happy New Year to you all!

liveforsummer · 27/12/2023 18:36

I'm working 🙃

Rosalisa · 27/12/2023 18:40

I flew from Inverness to Gatwick on Hogmanay once and it was pure brilliant.

soupmaker · 27/12/2023 18:44

We're going to join friends for the Bells and a party. DM will be here, she's not a fan of NY so she'll stay in with the kids.

I'll do steak pie dinner on the first and we will go visiting relatives near where we live.

Last year dh and I went to the Scotch Malt Whisky Association Dinner (in Bath Street). I'd got him membership of the SMWA as a Christmas present years ago. We had a fantastic night but unfortunately he didn't get his act together and get it booked for this year Sad plus it was very expensive Hmm

We walked the 3/4 of an hour home in the sleet at 1.30am on Ne'er Day.

Which reminds me - he must check with them to see if there have been any cancellations Grin

We used to do first footing but that was years ago. Don't know anybody that does that anymore. Quite sad, as it used to be fun, having a drink or soup in each house and a laugh and a get together.

Does that still happen?
