XL bully dogs and Scotland

Another blinder by our "wonderful" government. I was not aware that the ban on these awful chav beast dogs only applied in England and Wales. No legislation to ban/restrict them in Scotland.

Some dim woman who runs a "bullie rescue" says she has been "inundated". Isn't that just marvellous.

See also ferries, fwiw. They're not sexy enough for the SNP to want to pursue them. Any project/issue that requires practical, down to earth action, hard work and actually fixing stuff they will wave aside, in order to focus on ... gender recognition, or some other issue that it's easy to posture on and cast oneself as the gloriously progressive enlightened person, especially in contrast to all the grubby, ordinary politicians who are so bogged down in the boring details of roads, infrastructure, health care, pragmatic day to day running-a-country stuff, which is just beneath the SNP. I'm actually starting to think they have a knee-jerk assumption against any cause that requires concrete action.

Photo-opps, interesting flags, and anything that smacks of Great Important International Politics, they are on it like a car bonnet.

I'm not actually here to bash the SNP, but it's frustrating to watch this woeful administration run the country into the ground - or I suppose in this instance, send it to the dogs.

spot on @ArabellaScott !

They have turned Scotland into a third world country it’s terrible to see…

All money they wasted fighting the trans bill which was ludicrous…thankfully U.K. government overruled and common aenae prevailed!

When will we be rid of these clowns they are a scourge…the xl issue just another example of their inadequacies…but this is dangerous and some poor person could lose their life if this isn’t put right asap.

NewnamefirNewYear · 06/01/2024 12:55

Again couldn't agree more @ArabellaScott

Funnily, as I've said before, this tight regime in Scotland basically offers no protection. We've had the fog warden involved on numerous occasions, our councillor is involved, another councillor lives on our estate though this isn't his ward.

The most action we have is that one owner (of 3 who breeds them) has been told he should only walk one at a time. The one identified as responsible for 2 dog attacks is supposed to be walked on a leash. He doesn't comply, we've supplied photo evidence of non compliance and dog warden can't do anything other than basically remind the owner.

On a seperate occasion, young children playing in the park on the estate were chased by 2 of these dogs but a parent got them into a nearby house before any harm was done. Maybe they just wanted to play but the children were terrified. Advice from dog warden was to club together for a 6 foot high fence round the park.

So tight regime my arse.

I also wouldn't want to be the warden going round to these houses.

I doubt a ''six foot fence'' would be strong enough - these things crash through fencing easily.
That would also cost many, many thousands of pounds to do 'well', made out of iron railings with arched tops for safety.

These XL types get very over excited and have a very high prey drive- a running terrified child is just the type of target they fixate on.

Someone would also be bound to leave a gate open.

Our local park {England} has an iron railings fence - not high enough! Dogs often leapt over it into the ''Dog free'' children only zone- plus people forget to latch the gates so dogs can just push through into the children's area.

ArabellaScott · 06/01/2024 14:17

oakleaffy, I meant to say I'm really sorry to hear about your experience, it sounds terrifying.

BigBoysDontCry · 06/01/2024 14:31

Yeah, we didn't go for the fence for many of reasons given and that also 20 years later it's still being transferred to the council for maintenance.

One bleeding heart on the local discussion said that people should stop their children running and screaming. In a play park.

One person was actually helpful about how children should behave if a dog runs at them. However I think I would be hard pushed to stand still with my arms crossed and head down when faced with one of these beasts bearing down on me never mind a 4 foot, 4 stone child.

Thanks @ArabellaScott -It was terrifying.

It made me scared to walk my own dog for a while ( still am apprehensive)

The owner of the giant hippo 🦛 ( woman) had zero control of it

She seemed afraid of her own dog.

Dog warden said releasing my dog ( and friends small dog) was the only thing to have done.

These things are so dog aggressive.

I hope Scotland follows England and Wales, but all three Countries need to look at controlling the breeding of dogs ( Which they probably won’t!)
Plus ear cropping- So many dogs of the Bully type have mutilated ears for cosmetic reasons.

ValerieMoore · 06/01/2024 14:52

@BigBoysDontCry I learned that a few years ago. I held eye contact with the dog and it made it worse

oakleaffy · 06/01/2024 14:55

One bleeding heart on the local discussion said that people should stop their children running and screaming. In a play park.

Unreal.

Am in a park now and the children’s part is full of children running around and shrieking.

Who’d have thought it?!

Keep children on a lead so dogs aren’t triggered to chase and bite?
🥜.

Do think the entitlement of dog owners generally is a bit of an issue. I live in semi rural "naice" area and every other person seems to have a dog who they think everyone should worship. God forbid you actually want to walk on the same pavement.

Definitely the case.
I don’t appreciate being leapt up at by muddy paws - and lots of middle class dogs are also very poorly trained.
Generally not aggressive breeds though.
Vizlas, Fox red Labradors and Retrievers and Whippets looking around me at this moment.

SomeCatFromJapan · 06/01/2024 15:53

Labradoodles and similar are terrible for jumping if they're not trained. Friends have one and they kind of stand there proudly as it hurls itself all over people. But if I had to choose between a bit of mud and life changing injuries then I'll take the mud.

oakleaffy · 06/01/2024 15:55

Just had a strange dog jump up with muddy paws
At least it’s owner also said “ No!” To it as well as me.

BigBoysDontCry · 06/01/2024 15:56

I agree, there are many dogs that are poorly trained, most of them are not aggressive or would be pretty easily dealt with.

Yes it was one of these that just leapt up at me- Terrible habit.
Poodles too often have painful raking claws ( nails but longer and sharper)

oakleaffy · 06/01/2024 16:00

Edit : Labradoodle leapt up , not XL Bully.
XL’s tend to leap and
grab with teeth -

SomeCatFromJapan · 06/01/2024 16:04

Also I must admit it's hard to stay cross at a sweet furry little face who only did it because it's so excited to see you. They have a lot of joie de vivre.
Hence me wanting them to be able live in safety.

ArabellaScott · 06/01/2024 17:06

I have a dog that can get excited and bounce around people. So I keep her on the lead when I need to.

A dog that is actually capable of killing and is not restrainable is a whole other kettle of fish.

It's absolutely absurd for people to suggest that breed has nothing to do with it. Nobody has ever been savaged to death by a chihuahua.

Precisely.
Chihuahuas are always being mentioned by Pit /XL Bully supporters as 'more aggressive' which is ludicrous.

Chihuahuas are about the size of a Guinea Pig, and could be picked up with one hand.
Maybe a huge pack of them could nibble one to death, Piranha-style.

XL's have that massive strength- even the Americans call them things like ''The Unstoppable Juggernaut''

Yes , lots and all kept out the press! Kids can no longer walk to school , cant go to local parks , bus drivers let these dogs on buses without leads . Cant go shopping or to cafes because they are everywhere . I used to love dogs but not now. Not when we are forced to stay in the house because we don't want mauled . Surrounded by them every where and not forgetting the chorus of barking from every second house which seems to have a dog now. So many ilegal breeds as well. I even asked a policeman to tell someone at the bus stop to put their dog on a lead as it was a nuisance. Policeman didn't bother and eventually it went for someone taking several officers to stop it. Buses even reek of damp dog .also the itching from allergies that were previously non existent and flea bites from buses and cafes from seats etc Dogs are not more important than humans but we have no life now in any sense . The absolute fear of not knowing if your going to live or die just because you have went out your door is absolutely beyond ridiculous. Something needs to be done and done soon. Every dog should now be leashed muzzled and insured and registered . For a high price to keep council estate idiots away from them. Because lets be honest , this is where the problem lies. Amazing the amount of folk with no money but can afford a grand on a dog and vet bills but yet can't pay council tax etc. If you cannot afford a dog then you should not be allowed to have one because that's a huge flag that you know nothing about training or handling a dog . And its only going to get worse now everyone in England is sending them up this way. Meanwhile , to all the responsible owners , thank you for being wonderful!

ThomasinaLivesHere · 07/01/2024 21:06

I don’t know if I’m just more aware but I saw two XLs today where before I hadn’t noticed any in my area. It could just be a coincidence but it would be good to know the exact increase in numbers due to the ban in England.

BigBoysDontCry · 08/01/2024 13:10

Just thought I'd give an update on my emails to msps. I've had 2 responses today. One from labour and one from Tories.

Both saying their stance and that of Scottish Labour and Scottish Conservative parties is that there should not have been a divergence and that scotgov have created a dangerous loophole.

I'll update any further responses.
