what's it like for an English person living in Scotland?

Have been pondering moving north of the border.... I was wondering what it would be like living there as an English person? I've only ever been on holidays up there - mostly just some good-humoured ribbing, however I've read from some English people that this can get very wearing after a while and can sometimes have an unpleasant edge to it.

I would say at least 50% (and growing) of the population of towns and villages in Scotland are now English so no need to worry.

Yip. Still lots making the move North. You'd really in the majority in a lot of new housing schemes.

@Iloveyoubut i agree, it’s a very strange view. There is snobbery and inverted snobbery across the UK. I come from a part of Scotland where speech is a marker. There are those who use the local ‘oary’ dialect and there are those who don’t.

They’re also massive Rangers anti-catholics. And I’m a Catholic. My parents are Irish. Doesn’t help!

Personally part of the problem is they blame me for DH living in England, even though I met him here. They don’t understand why anyone would live anywhere but Glasgow.

Yes this tends to have a sectarian element rather than your English.

This is pretty unique to Glasgow Ayrshire to a point and only in very working class areas.

They sound pretty uneducated but as l said previously if other people gave you a hard time verbally they would almost always step in, as in it's ok for them to rib you but nobody else.

Sometimes ribbing back can work Glasgow folk tend to appreciate that shows your thick skin almost.

If it's funny comments they would laugh at themselves this somehow accepts you.

Scousers the exact same huge Irish influence on both cities.

Very much them and us..

Glasgow sports radio shows have hour or so debates every night about sports they love to debate things into an inch of their lifes...

No other Scots really bother as much.

Pretty tight knit people.

It's a complex sense of humour pretty brutal at times for people to take.. EVEN other Scots.

Scots are less snobby than English people? Is this a real thing you’re actually saying out loud? 😂 I’m Scottish and I’m baffled at this! How on earth do you come to that conclusion!

Scots are less snobby, as a rule they are more happy with their lot rather than English people who strives to do better.

Sometimes this is slightly frowned upon in Scotland as you are seen to be doing well.

A soccer player told me this 20 yr ago in Scotland they build you up then like to knock you down to Earth...

l dont think England is just the same, Northern England is a bit more like Scotland but Southern England somewhat different again.

Scottish politics tends to be based on equality as we tend to vote for Centre left Parties rather than dog eat dog as the case in England.

However English people tend to like and seem to adapt this once moved here.

All welcome in my book

There are ‘snobby’ English and Scottish people. I don’t know if you’re from Scotland but I’ve lived here all my life and I can assure you there it’s plenty of snobbery in varies places… I won’t name them. You can’t judge an entire nation on whether it’s snobby or not! And what on earth do you mean they’re more happy with their lot and don’t strive to do better? That’s so offensive! Any all the Scottish folk with ambition all got off their arse and moved to England! Ffs this thread is insane! 😂

Hum I'd take "happy with their lot and not strive to do better " as a compliment!

As said different folk, its why Scots tend to vote different than Southern England..
Far more social policies in Scotland and this is considered normal, not a bad thing really.
Even West coast / East coast Scots can be pretty different sense humour more friendly in the West Glasgow possibly due to the strong connection to Ireland going back generations etc.
Liverpool, Newcastle both the same big Irish migration years ago, made their mark on at 3 cities
All 3 would talk you to death..
All 3 working class cities with LESS snobbery.

Scot born and bread DG
