what's it like for an English person living in Scotland?

Have been pondering moving north of the border.... I was wondering what it would be like living there as an English person? I've only ever been on holidays up there - mostly just some good-humoured ribbing, however I've read from some English people that this can get very wearing after a while and can sometimes have an unpleasant edge to it.

thanks for responses.

Tbh the politics would be a big turn-off, and I'm not especially political. The SNP were authoritarian nutjobs during Covid and they deliberately stoke anti-English sentiment to win votes (despite having largely failed in office on just about any measure). There's a patronishing 'we know best' attitude about them also, which you can see on their pushing of 'woke' issues and their war on alcohol (had some spotty teenager in Tesco take a bottle of wine out of my hands because it was after 10pm - honestly wtf?). Interesting how similar attitudes are on display in Wales and Ireland, all countries with a relatviely recent history of rigid religious conformity.

Anyway, the thought of living in an independent Scotland where those types are given complete free reign does not appeal tbh.

That said the place is beautful, less crowded than England, and politicians come and go. Scots are also less snobby than English people. Housing situ also appears to be less insane.

'authoritarian nutjobs'

'war on alcohol'

Dearie me. You sound like you'd be permanently moaning if you lived in Scotland. I'm sensing a sneering attitude towards any country that isn't England.

It's probably not the move for you.

I think the PP was pointing out that was the man's opinion who she received a hour long rant from rather then the PP opinion.....

I think she’s spoiling for a fight! 😂

Marths · 14/06/2023 14:42

So you think England would be better of without Scotland. Based solely on one man who went on a rant.

Please read my posts and tell me if I give even the teeniest tiniest hint that I think that.

awaynboilyurheid · 14/06/2023 20:15

Kooky totally agree the silly alcohol laws of not allowing drink to be bought before a certain time on a Sunday in a supermarket, will do nada to stop alcoholism but it looks like the politicians are doing something so they brought it in and made it law.
I am anti SNP but you can see how others feel when this post turned, I think they will lose their popularity now NS has gone. I know plenty of English people who have settled here, especially in Edinburgh but some in rural communities they all seem to love life here.

”Anyway, the thought of living in an independent Scotland where those types are given complete free reign does not appeal “

Best give it a miss then? That attitude (“those types” to described the population supporting until now at least the largest political party in the country) smacks of superiority and may not be welcomed.

We wouldn’t have supported the independence argument had we been living in Scotland at the time of the referendum. Moving there quite soon, with Scottish ancestry, we certainly would now. The people of Scotland were made false promises based on the strength of the union and its future in Europe. They were lied to, as were all other nationalities in the UK. The Brexit result has been disastrous and was forced upon Scotland against its collective will. When we have voting rights, we shall be voting in favour of independence with the fervent hope that Scotland will be reintegrated into
the EU in ours, or certainly our adult children’s, lifetimes.

My comment on 'These types' was a clear reference to the authoritarian tendencies of some SNP politicans.... but nope, please deliberately misrepresent my post as a slander against their voters.

Again, where's the sneering? Believe you me, I could reel off a very long list of all the problems with England and the many ways in which it rates poorly against other countries.

The 'authoritian' comments are specifically about the policies of the SNP esp. during Covid. You realise that SNP does not equal Scotland/Scots/Scottish society right?

DH and I moved to a small town near Glasgow to be nearer his aging dad (who is Glaswegian but divorced from DH's mum who raised DH in England).

His family are quite rude to me and always mocking me for being English (actually I'm welsh but sound English!). I have been quite shocked by some of the comments they've made which border on xenophobic.

I want to move back to England as soon as we can as I think people are more accepting there.

I find best way to deal with similar is to smile indulgently at them. They want a rise. They want a debate. But smiling indulgently at them means you don’t waste your energy and it irritates the hell out of them because they know what you’re thinking! 😊

Triptoqueen · 15/06/2023 06:37

Most people are fine.
Quite a few are very pro indy but I doubt they'd say anything to your face.
We have soooo many tourists now that I don't think anyone is going to have a real issue. Where I am in the SW there are tons of English - mostly retirees moving to a pretty area with cheaper housing.

GulesMeansRed · 15/06/2023 08:21

DH is English, I'm Scottish. We met at Uni in Scotland, lived in England for about 14 years, have been back here about the same time. He doesn't have any issues locally. We are in an area where there are lots of people who did not grow up here. Close friends who are Irish, Northern Irish, English, Canadian. He also works in an industry where there are lots of people from other parts of the UK.

He most definitely felt anti-English sentiment during the 2014 referendum and simmering under since then. There is a substantial percentage of nationalists who DO hate the English and England. The "Braveheart" contingent. They don't seem to have as much hatred for the Northern Irish and Welsh.

Bideshi · 15/06/2023 10:38

I don't recognise any of that anti-Englishness in the south of Scotland, and the PP writing from the Borders said the same. There are so many English (and other Europeans) living in this area. I think a lot of the twattier behaviour is a Glasgow/Central Belt thing. Maybe, OP, Dumfries and Galloway/Borders are the places to consider. They're beautiful anyway and have good shops, restaurants, cultural and sporting facilities and a generally laid-back vibe. I live in an area which looks like the Highlands, but I am also an hour from both Glasgow and Edinburgh.
I love living in Scotland.

No, just not a fan of when people make generalisations about a whole country based on one interaction with one person.

That the thought getting into a political discussion with anyone from Scotland makes you tremble. And that you think that independence would be a win for England. Based on one man.

HandsupSue · 15/06/2023 11:55

** Separation is for the best. And asap!
(not really my view but quite honestly after that encounter with him, laughable to think100% win for Scotland and 100% loss for England)**

seems pretty clear to me 😂

That change in the law totally predates the anti-alcohol legislation intended to tackle the problem of consumption, and was entirely about removing the ability of football fans to purchase so much alcohol early in the morning that they were legless and desperate to batter folk in time 12pm kick-off times, which had themselves already been brought forward for the same reason. It came about largely because of repeated, long-standing requests by senior police because of the ridiculous resource-hog policing large football matches in Scotland had become. Absolutely nothing to do with politicians wanting to be seen to be 'doing something'.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/06/2023 12:19

We moved to a village near Paisley about 15 years ago, and we love it here. I don't think any of us have encountered any anti-English sentiment - on the contrary, we've felt very accepted and have all made good friends here.

because if so, yes I think I would tremble at the possibility of you sitting on the end of my sun bed barking nonsense at me for an hour! 😂

HandsupSue · 15/06/2023 16:28

@Marths you’re not holidaying in holiday in Spain in July and Switzerland in august are you? 😬

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 20/06/2023 12:26

We've been here about 12 years, never had a problem, people have been great to us. However, we have had conversations with Scots who have mentioned how they get fed up with entitled, know-it-all English coming in, buying up housing and telling them how to do things 'better'. Especially the gung-ho types who want to make changes, sort everything out etc. It's simply a matter of not being that person. Which applies to everywhere, I think.

Personally I love the Scots, their sense of humour, outlook on life and willingness to help or leave you alone if you want it.

No, but my opinion on a whole country isn't based on one encounter with a tourist, unlike you.

If people with different opinions have that effect on you I dont know how you ever go outside.
