what's it like for an English person living in Scotland?

Have been pondering moving north of the border.... I was wondering what it would be like living there as an English person? I've only ever been on holidays up there - mostly just some good-humoured ribbing, however I've read from some English people that this can get very wearing after a while and can sometimes have an unpleasant edge to it.

She was talking about the SNP. Not Scotland. The SNP are not synonymous with Scotland.

Which was posted after your post.

You seem to think anyone who doesn't hate the SNP ie a terrible person.

I was going to say "Most places should be fine for English people" but then I read your second comment. I've changed my response to:

People who move into Scottish communities, no matter where their origin, will likely be welcome if they are decent humans who seek to learn about their new area and fit in with existing customs. Working locally and contributing to the community will also help.

People who are rude and poorly informed about THE ENTIRE COUNTRY and happily spout off about how much better the place they came from is, will likely be treated politely but muttered about behind their backs and generally left out of the community.

I fear from your second post that you fall into the last category.

It doesn't matter what your thoughts are on the SNP (and remember that all your "knowledge" is filtered through the English media, which often prints two different versions of the same story on either side of the border) but respect for the fact that a lot of Scots did vote for them would go a long way. Do you think all English people are one homogeneous mass? No? Why then do you think that it's not okay for different Scots to have different opinions?

Wow... so I post some critical comments on a political party, also voicing similar criticisms of other parties, and am told I shouldn't move to Scotland with my 'attitude'.

Where did I say that England was better than Scotland? Or thay Scots can't vote however they like. The whole gist of my post is that Scotland is in many ways a better country than England.

Yeah probably best you don’t move up if that’s your view.

The “war on alcohol” is needed imo - there are deep running socio-economic problems in Scotland that you obv don’t understand.

So because some people can't handle their drink, the rest of us have to be punished like naughty children?

Better than being Scots or Irish in England I would think.

Scotland's larger cities are very tolerant and welcoming. Unless you're one of of these halfwits that go around proclaiming your English-ness at the top of your voice.

I'm Scottish and I find your second post offensive for multiple reasons. Your mass generalisation, sweeping contentious statements and repeated use of horrible words awful. Tbh your attitude absolutely stinks and if you voiced such views anywhere in the UK I think you would cause offense. I don't know if you are just posting to shit stir or if you really believe the bilious words you are spewing. If your attitude and opinions are truly this then please do not move to anywhere in Scotland.

Strange how this simple question has now devolved into a political debate and accusations of 'shit stirring', as if I have nothing better to do than post crypto-anti SNP posts under the guise of pretending to want to move north of the border.

Yes, I think the SNP are awful. You know who else I think are awful? - Labour, Conservatives, Lib Dems, Greens, Plaid Cymru, Sinn Fein... geddit?

Kinf of worrying tbh that people here get so offended about mild criticisms of their preferred political party.

I don't feel punished by our alcohol regulations, bizzarre thing to say

Chipping in - English but in a border town - it's been grand for us here

The independence question is different here - , it's an easy stroll to the border , farms straddle the border , we ( we! Clearly I think of myself as belonging here ) - ok the native population probably have more in common with the people just over the other side than those in Glasgow or the highlands

Drug and alcohol addiction is very different to not being able to handle a bev.

Not being able to buy alcohol before 10am / after 10pm shouldn’t be a problem for most people anyway.

We also have TV adverts encouraging people to carry naloxone.

Rainbowshit · 13/06/2023 17:43

@lysozyme
I refer you to @Christmascracker0 post at 14.20 which is BEFORE mine.

"Yeah probably best you don’t move up if that’s your view."

Nope I think the people telling someone they are not welcome in Scotland because they criticise the SNP are terrible people. HTH

Christmascracker0 · 13/06/2023 18:19

Yeah sorry that was bad of me to say that.

I just mean to say that independence is about more than politics in Scotland and a lot of people feel strongly (both ways) about the SNP as a party because of it. If you want to live in Scotland it’s just something you have to accept. Again, I’m not an SNP voter or a nationalist, just a balanced individual.

The alcohol thing isn’t fair to slate though and I stand by that.

clpsmum · 13/06/2023 18:23

I'm English in Glasgow I love it

Notanotherhousepost · 13/06/2023 18:35

I’ll let you know…… I’m moving to Blairgowrie on Friday from Somerset………. DH is originally from Edinburgh but I’m very much a scouser

Yeah, because it's not like you're the one who brought up politics or anything.

You're clearly reading a different thread than this one.

readsalotgirl63 · 13/06/2023 18:37

OP's second post made me wonder why she/he wants to move here.

wildinthecountry · 13/06/2023 18:40

@readsalotgirl63 Just a little bit of stirring , given snp in the news at the moment .

readsalotgirl63 · 13/06/2023 18:41

Indeed.

Rainbowshit · 13/06/2023 18:42

@lysozyme I've just given you one example, you also pointed out the example that you said was after my post. There are several others if you can be bothered to look. I think it's you that needs to read the thread more carefully.

Perhaps read the last paragraph of her post? Perhaps if you try and separate Scotland from the SNP you might understand better.

readsalotgirl63 · 13/06/2023 18:46

Gosh yes -thanks for that @Rainbowshit

wildinthecountry · 13/06/2023 18:49

Also but in answer to your 'question' , both my sons both English born are quite happy living here . Amazingly .

AlbaAurora · 13/06/2023 18:51

recyclemeagain · 13/06/2023 13:16

Honestly as someone living here that's a really sweeping and largely inaccurate comment on our government. And my South Londoner husband is a big supporter of the SNP himself now too, more than I am certainly.
It sounds like your comment was purely to stir up some drama for someone who claims to not be particularly political. Hopefully if you do move here it will be with a more open mind that your comment suggests as that attitude really isn't nice.

Absolutely agree recyclemeagain.

BarelyLiterate · 13/06/2023 18:53

I worked in Glasgow for a while. Excellent city. Friendly people. Awful climate. It was absolutely fine, & most people were great.

It’s very obvious, however, as soon as I open my mouth that I’m not southern, or posh, or from London. I also made it clear that I didn’t vote for Brexit or the Tories, and I was never stupid enough to venture an opinion on Scottish football or on independence. These things probably helped.

StuntNun · 13/06/2023 18:54

I experienced a fair amount of anti-English sentiment. If there's a sports event going on then they'll support any team that isn't England. Then there would be occasions when someone would go on a rant about how much they hate the English, tempered by a "but not you of course, you're okay" or "oh sorry, I forgot you were English." But apart from that there wasn't any discrimination or harassment, it was more low key hating the English as a matter of principle and national identity.
