what's it like for an English person living in Scotland?

Have been pondering moving north of the border.... I was wondering what it would be like living there as an English person? I've only ever been on holidays up there - mostly just some good-humoured ribbing, however I've read from some English people that this can get very wearing after a while and can sometimes have an unpleasant edge to it.

I never felt quite at home in Scotland, and have lived in other countries where I did feel more at home. Nothing unpleasant but just that feeling.

I experienced a fair amount of anti-English sentiment. If there's a sports event going on then they'll support any team that isn't England. Then there would be occasions when someone would go on a rant about how much they hate the English, tempered by a "but not you of course, you're okay" or "oh sorry, I forgot you were English." But apart from that there wasn't any discrimination or harassment, it was more low key hating the English as a matter of principle and national identity.

While I lived in England it was awful during the football , at work there was one German woman and me Scottish , it was really horrible .

StuntNun · 13/06/2023 19:11

Don't get me wrong @wildinthecountry I'd much rather live in Scotland than in England. The over the top attitude to sports and the obsession with alcohol, even at school events, seem so bizarre.

wildinthecountry · 13/06/2023 19:17

I mean I liked living in England both my kids were born there , but during the football anyone who was not English was fair game .
The vast majority were good people but football does funny things to people.
I actually felt really sorry for my German friend .

I'm Scottish and I find your second post offensive for multiple reasons. Your mass generalisation, sweeping contentious statements and repeated use of horrible words awful. Tbh your attitude absolutely stinks and if you voiced such views anywhere in the UK I think you would cause offense. I don't know if you are just posting to shit stir or if you really believe the bilious words you are spewing. If your attitude and opinions are truly this then please do not move to anywhere in Scotland.

Beautiful
friendly
but…
many more people suffering from alcoholism and poverty on the streets than ever been aware of in any part of England

and the climate. A chill in winter that shook me to the bones. I still shiver when I think of it. And the summer is very mild compared to where I live in SE England

@lysozyme

You seem to think anyone who doesn't hate the SNP ie a terrible person.

Nope I think the people telling someone they are not welcome in Scotland because they criticise the SNP are terrible people. HTH

Well exactly.
I know plenty of people who don't vote SNP.
It hasn't stopped us being friends.

TheShellBeach · 14/06/2023 10:17

And as far as the climate is concerned I prefer it here.
We're in Argyll so it rains a bit (!) We get very little snow, though, and it doesn't get so hot that you can't move around comfortably.

TheShellBeach · 14/06/2023 10:20

Another good thing is healthcare in remote areas.
We're in a small village. There are three doctors, an advanced nurse practitioner and two other HCAs.
When I ring the surgery someone answers immediately and I get an appointment within two days.
Nobody asks me why I want it, either.
Brilliant.

”Anyway, the thought of living in an independent Scotland where those types are given complete free reign does not appeal “

Best give it a miss then? That attitude (“those types” to described the population supporting until now at least the largest political party in the country) smacks of superiority and may not be welcomed.

We wouldn’t have supported the independence argument had we been living in Scotland at the time of the referendum. Moving there quite soon, with Scottish ancestry, we certainly would now. The people of Scotland were made false promises based on the strength of the union and its future in Europe. They were lied to, as were all other nationalities in the UK. The Brexit result has been disastrous and was forced upon Scotland against its collective will. When we have voting rights, we shall be voting in favour of independence with the fervent hope that Scotland will be reintegrated into
the EU in ours, or certainly our adult children’s, lifetimes.

If you want to see the extent to which a political movement can lie, lie and lie again to their followers, the Indy movement is an excellent example.

any idea why the Indy movement has never been able to produce an economic forecast for independence? Want to hazard a guess? Vote how you like, but don’t go thinking the Indy movement tells the truth.

kelsaycobbles · 14/06/2023 10:55

The English gave us brexit and then complain if the Scot's want independence?

How odd

Scottishskifun · 14/06/2023 12:04

As you can see OP the raise of politics quickly derails things and it can become pretty nasty pretty quickly.
Honestly this is also my experience in RL if it's mentioned by people I don't really know or I'm asked my opinion. I had someone take offence at my DS's refusal to take a free Scottish flag at a local fayre but he wanted the union jack hooter and made a comment to me about it....he's 4! I just rolled my eyes tbh and didnt engage he just wanted the hooter regardless of what was on it!

I don't have this issue with friends as there is a mutual respect there and I have SNP member friends who don't believe Independence is a good idea from a financial perspective.

If you can then do a taster but in Winter for a month or so (if you can work remotely) as different areas are different. It will also let you know if you can take Winter in that area.

TrishTrix · 14/06/2023 12:16

Don't be a dick and people will treat you OK. Having read your post at 12:45 yesterday I think you might struggle. I'm not a diehard SNP supporter by any means and was passionately for the union in the IndyRef but your posting irritated.

Do be aware that "anyone but England" is deeply engrained for sport. I've lived in London for almost 20 years and am still astounded when colleagues think I might support England. I mean it's just so basic. Of course I won't! You don't spend years singing "Flower of Scotland" at Murrayfield to then support the England rugby team . Even if my Gran was from Dorset.

It does go both ways too. I think I experience low level racism in London occasionally. People comment on my accent all the time and make it sound like I'm Rab C Nesbitt. They also seem to think all of Scotland is one giant scheme with deprived people drinking Tennant's special. Someone once claimed I was lying about my education due to my accent. As a middle class East coaster it's all a bit frustrating.

My current Glaswegian colleague and I have at least educated other colleagues about the variety in Scottish accents - they recognised that the Dundonian we looked after a few weeks ago must have come from a different place to either of us. I was very proud!

toomanyclothes262 · 14/06/2023 12:28

You sound awful and tbh I wouldn't want to live anywhere near you, Scotland or not.

That "spotty teenager" was just doing his job as required by law. Grow up and don't slag off people who are doing nothing wrong. Your comment was completely unnecessary/had absolutely nothing to do with the political argument, and completely set my teeth on edge.

HandsupSue · 14/06/2023 13:29

The thought of getting in a political discussion with a Scot makes me tremble

the memory of being holiday (if you’re reading… Lanzarote, last October, iberostar, I was outside watching my children in the covered swimming pool part. You were a couple on your mid fifties and really enjoyed James O’Brien) and listening to an hour crazed ranting of the man about how Scotland would be so so so much better off out of the UK and Scotland would lose nothing but the rest of the UK would be on its knees without scotland (sure), gives me nightmares

goodkidsmaadhouse · 14/06/2023 13:33

For me it's been bloody brilliant every single step of the way and I would only move back to England under extreme duress. I've never experienced any anti English sentiment and have friends from quite a range of socioeconomic backgrounds and indeed nationalities, albeit most of my friends are Scottish.

However I agree with PP that your posts are coming across as pretty offensive and if you come with that attitude, you might not have such a pleasant experience.

So based on one guy you met on holiday once the idea of getting into any kind of political discussion with any one from Scotland makes you tremble?

What you say now”. Separation is for the best. And asap!
(not really my view but quite honestly after that encounter with him, laughable to think100% win for Scotland and 100% loss for England)

I have NC because I don't want other threads connected.
Been here 20 years. My first job here was customer facing. There were a select few gentlemen who would rather make their own queue for another colleague to serve them than be served by the English Woman 🤷🏻‍♀️

So you think England would be better of without Scotland. Based solely on one man who went on a rant.

I think the PP was pointing out that was the man's opinion who she received a hour long rant from rather then the PP opinion.....
