Who do you want to see as new First Minister?

And who do you think it'll be if they are different?

Not seen any threads on this yet!

My two cents -

I voted SNP when I was very young (Salmond) and under the impression they were a kinda catch-all working man's party who didn't do much to offend the left or right, but I stopped voting for them ages ago and recently started to actively despise them.

Normally I'm the polar opposite of the Reddit consensus and they seem to want Robertson but only, it seems, because they can't have Mhari Black (which is one MP I DO know and absolutely cannot stand). I feel like Forbes is the only one who'd bring them back to the centre and increase membership as she might attract everyone who left back.

So I suppose I'm a toss-up between Forbes who might pull them away from their more (imho) farcical policies and Black who might finally start to kill them dead in the water.

I do believe Sturgeon resigned because the recent polling data (where ALL age demographics agreed with the WM overturn including a large amount of SNP membership) showed that people vote SNP despite their progressive policies and not because of them. I reckon they knew it would really hurt them at the next election, and since she can't U-turn, the only thing left to do was step aside and let a new leader shift their direction.

I'm interested to know what people on here think though.

Well I'd love Joanna Cherry but that won't happen

FionnulaTheCooler · 18/02/2023 17:54

Mhairi Black can't stand for FM though can she, due to not being an MSP? Thankfully.

Yousless would also kill them dead seeing as he make a rip roaring mess of everything he touches.

Whoever gets the job has to sack the greens or else they are in the same boat just doing Patsie Harvie & loopy Lorna's bidding

Ken Bruce.

RULE BRITANNIA

Cheekymaw · 18/02/2023 18:12

Joanna Cherry or JK Rowling. I don't trust any of the political parties in Scotland or England . Labour are a bunch of tossers still too.

Aphrathestorm · 18/02/2023 18:13

Forbes all the way.

Yup, same as Cherry. Though there are a lot of loons over there who seem to want her to do what Salmond did and become leader then run for MSP in an election so she can be FM too.

Well we've sent a few Scots down to Westminster to be PM so I suppose could return the favour.

PacificallyRequested · 18/02/2023 18:27

It'll be Robertson. Then Forbes will get her chance after him.

ClosedAuraOpenMind · 18/02/2023 18:52

Forbes might be gender critical - hence the live for her on here - but she doesn't support either same sex marriage or abortion because of her religious beliefs, which feels dangerous to me

NicolaSturGONE · 18/02/2023 19:09

Someone who isn't pro independence, so not an SNP leader then!

RomeoOscarXrayIndigoEcho · 18/02/2023 19:15

I'd quite like Ash Regan to be FM. Or Katie Forbes.

PacificallyRequested · 18/02/2023 19:48

Ash Regan has got no chance though. She's only standing to show the level of opposition to the GRR and let whoever wins know that they can't ignore this any more. Which is fair enough but she must know she can't win.

ssd · 18/02/2023 20:19

Joanna Cherry

dormouses · 18/02/2023 20:56

so few options! I think Kate Forbes would be good but not so soon after having a baby. FM mentioned the toll on family life and 2 female MSPs left at least due to same reasons.

What is it that makes Ash Regan have no chance, and puts her behind Kate Forbes and the others? Forbes must be problematic for many women given her views on abortion and same-sex marriage.

This.

I despise them all equally. The Tories for being robbing bastards. Labour for being spineless and slimy. The SNP for their complete denial over the the fact their running of Scotland has been tragic, and the place is in a worse state than ever. But I’m English so I have no say really Grin

What I want is something like New Labour in its early days. A pragmatic central party, prioritising families and with long term plans for healthcare, the environment and the cost of living/housing crisis (ok New Labour didn’t have that but, you know). No identity politics bollocks, no TWAW lunacy, with high standards and transparency (for politicians anyway). A prime minister like Tony in his early days, maybe a slightly less Conservative Ken Clarke.

The current sad selection makes it not worth getting out of bed to go to the polling station.

Cuppasoupmonster · 18/02/2023 22:14

Sorry just been wanging on about what I want when the point of the thread is about a leader for Scotland. I guess I was just saying ‘what I would want in your shoes’

Emerald237 · 18/02/2023 22:25

Why don't you like Mhari Black? I don't keep too abreast of Scottish Politics but anything I have seen of her in has been really positive.

Personally I find her deliberately abrasive, performatively "working class" (when it suits her) - and I say that as a proud working class woman, uninspiring, inefficient and hypocritical. She's all mouth, nae action.

Which is typical SNP frankly.

MrsFinkelstein · 18/02/2023 22:34

I'm hoping for Yousef - he'll be as useless as Swinney was as leader and hopefully as damaging to the party.

“Not so soon after having a baby” - Jesus Christ.

I agree. I’m willing for the short term pain it would cause if it kills off their support
