So would I would, I do understand why people vote SNP but why anyone thinks scexit stacks up economically as anything other than a disaster is mind boggling.

That IFS report says the SNP are going to have to raise taxes further and even so make cuts, and all this without trying to find independence.

I don't understand why anyone votes for them tbh.
They've proven they can't run the country or achieve independence.
The percentage of people wanting independence hasn't changed since the last indyref.

WouldBeGood · 13/06/2022 22:35

DP used ti support them but can’t stand them now, because of the failings of the last 14 years. He also wants answers about what would happen post referendum. I think the yes vote might well be lower this time as lots of people must be the same.

It never ceases to amaze me how so called intelligent people can continue to vote for the SNP.
I myself am politically homeless, but never SNP or Green.
With everything that is going on, to spend all that time on money on another referendum, possibly illegal one, instead of more important things, is just nuts.
But she probably knows that, but can't lose her supporters.

Stroopwaffels · 14/06/2022 09:56

The whole idea of another toxic independence referendum makes me sick. DH is English and despite the SNP official line that they don't hate the English, we all know the truth, don't we? So divisive and the wounds haven't healed since the last time. And the last time was before Brexit and before Covid and before the threat of Russia was so great - and they really think that their position is stronger now?

Bunch of bloody deluded fools. I don't think I loathe and detest anyone as much as I detest Nippy.

WouldBeGood · 14/06/2022 11:03

Surely the current difficulties over Northern Ireland must serve as a warning,

And yes, @Stroopwaffels the international threat.

My real rail with it is the current shambolic state of Scotland. Maybe they could have given the prosperous/progressive stuff a go over the past 14years?!

OP posts:
mapleleavesreturn · 14/06/2022 11:24

Absolutely - trying to ship anything to NI is an ongoing fudge causing extra costs

Stroopwaffels · 14/06/2022 11:51

Details, details. The economy tanking and there being no money for public services is worth it, as long as we are free of the English and Westmonster. Remember a lot of their voters think Braveheart is a documentary.

abc5432 · 14/06/2022 13:31

The UK Government just has to repeat their firm 'NO' and mean it. Then someone official should look at enforcement action they can take against the FM and the Scottish Parliament for spending taxpayers' money on things which are beyond their powers.
The constant 'IndyRef2' wail stops inward investment into Scotland of all kinds including relocating medical staff and indeed I am relieved my DC post-University has decided to settle in the wider UK...the SNP is likely a major factor in his decision, as he also had 2 job offers in Scotland.

WouldBeGood · 14/06/2022 14:10

Oh, thank goodness @abc5432 Shows it’s really not a priority for a huge majority too.

I just cannot face it again.

I came close to selling up and moving south last time. It made everything so toxic.

Regardless of your political leanings, I don't see how anyone could want a land border and a complete lack of armed forces with the state of world affairs just now. The other things come and go. That does not

BinBandit · 14/06/2022 16:13

Also only 28% support for a 2nd ref:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion_polling_on_Scottish_independence#:~:text=Polls%20in%20the%20run%2Dup,an%20overall%20turnout%20of%2084.6%25.

The polls also change quite significantly when the Leave/Remain is used as the question with only 38% wanting to leave.

The Ipsos Mori polls are also generally a bit out of step (higher for independence) with other polls so the 5% drop is pretty significant.

RaraRachael · 14/06/2022 17:00

I can't bear the thought of all this shit again. I hated the divisiveness the last time when people who dared to say No were abused. None of the No people were abusive to Yes supporters as far as I was aware.

Can't she just concentrate on sorting out the mess that is the NHS, schools etc instead of continuing with this never ending obsession with independence? The 20 odd million it's going to cost could be put to so many better uses.

Blimeyherewegoagain · 14/06/2022 18:04

I think people might be braver to speak up for the no side this time . I know I’ll be happy to answer because I’m so over this now.

Scottishskifun · 14/06/2022 19:54

I need to learn how to use my phone video function quickly ready for when I start getting abuse again. It's not even a question of IF sadly as a obvious English person as soon as I speak last time as soon as I said I didn't support independence then it would start. I can't face the abuse again so going to film it and report to the police.

WouldBeGood · 14/06/2022 20:03

I think that’s true @Blimeyherewegoagain

Good idea @Scottishskifun

i see the “progressive” SNP and Greens have voted against free school meals for all today.

OP posts:
Blimeyherewegoagain · 14/06/2022 20:26

There’s no money. It’s been squandered away on things like opening foreign offices we don’t need and ferries that don’t run.
The thing is, right at the beginning they had the chance to give this a good go. I would have voted yes if the public purse had been managed responsibly. Instead it has been squandered by ineffectual people who have no experience of running a business and who have ended up with their snouts in the trough. It’s just like Animal Farm.

BinBandit · 14/06/2022 20:43

Just typed a whole long post and lost it, but the gist was that the natural progression to independence is for powers to be passed and countries to be run competently to the point where anything else seems stupid. Unfortunately all this crew have done is sow division and fuck up everything whilst being smug, sleekit and uncaring and blaming it on everyone else.

The level for support for independence is unchanged despite all the triggers that they tried to use - brexit, boris, covid, putin etc. They've had years to demonstrate competence to the nation and win hearts and minds but they'd rather be underhand and smug and corrupt.

WouldBeGood · 14/06/2022 21:19

Also railing about the creepy SNP MP Patrick Grady keeping his job despite sexual advances to teen at work

Could have written your post myself @Stroopwaffels . Every word of it.
So sad what the SNP have done to Scotland 😔

Blimeyherewegoagain · 15/06/2022 00:19

Those with an English spouse have a ticket out if it’s a yes vote. We wouldn’t stay.

I actually think a lot of higher earning Scots, those who'll easily get work in England or Wales, would up sticks and leave too.
I worry what it will do to the housing market. And the NHS if a lot of Doctors leave.

Blimeyherewegoagain · 15/06/2022 00:58

We’re too near pension age to stay.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 15/06/2022 09:01

The papers aren’t being kind this morning (except for the National obviously). If she hoped there’d be headlines about a new beginning and positive future for Scotland she’ll be disappointed to see that most are highlighting the practical issues, like the hard border we’d create with England if we rejoined the EU.

I also agree that in the very unlikely event of a Leave vote in Indyref2 many of those able to move will move elsewhere in the UK, and since the most mobile also tend to be the higher earners the tax base could take even more of a hammering. We are already looking at contingency plans if Scotland becomes unliveable.
