Moving to Glasgow areas

Joanna9494 · 05/01/2022 12:31

I’m from Dunoon and want to move away I’ve currently been looking at the airdrie/ Coatbridge area and looks quite nice. I’m initially looking for somewhere with a decent town centre with decent supermarkets a few shops, some places to go with the kids, parks and greenery and nice areas with nice schools. Plus I don’t drive so good busses and trains. Does anyone have any recommendations of where to avoid in airdrie/ Coatbridge areas? Or know if anywhere else what might be a good fit for me and my family? Thanks in advance!

Hello, how many bedrooms are you looking for and how I'll you be renting or buying? There are closer areas to Glasgow than the ones you've mentioned that are well set up for families (budget depending). Have a look at Bearsden, Old Drumchapel, Anniesland or Bishopbriggs for good family housing stick and rail links.

Makeuplover · 05/01/2022 12:46

Mount Florida, Shawlands, Cathcart and Newlands are nice. For the West end, Hillhead, Partick and some parts of Anniesland are also good. Not much for the East End but Dennistoun is nice. Avoid Possil, Milton, Springburn, Easterhouse, Maryhill, Parkhouse ( not the one in the south, this is in the north), Drumchapel, Parkhead, Cardonald, and Govanhill. There are some nice areas just outside of Glasgow such as Milngavie, Bearsden, Muirhead, Lenzie, Kirkintilloch, some parts of Bishopbriggs, Busby/Clarkston/Carmunnock, East Kilbride, Netherlee and Giffnock xx.

Jumpingintomenopause · 05/01/2022 12:49

Have you been to either town you mentioned? I personally would not like to live in either. Having gone to Coatbridge frequently for work I would not describe it as having a good town centre. I found it to be grotty and unpleasant.

There are lots of lovely areas surrounding Glasgow depending on what you want/distance from city/budget/transport etc. Tell us more and we can throw out ideas.

RunnerDown · 05/01/2022 12:54

Lenzie/ Kirkintilloch have great travel links, good schools, green spaces and supermarket. The centre of Kirkintilloch is a bit run down but with some cafes and pubs. Cheaper than Milngavie or Bearsden, although they have better shopping areas.
I wouldn’t fancy Coatbridge/ Andries.
Lots of nice places on the Southside too

heidbuttsupper · 05/01/2022 12:59

What's your budget op? Bearsden, Milngavie, Newton Mearns, Giffnock fantastic areas but pricey.

East Kilbride might be worth a look?

Joanna9494 · 05/01/2022 13:01

Thanks everyone! I’d be looking to rent a 3 bedroom, max budget ideally £650pcm but could possibly squeeze to £700pcm.(if it means a house with garden) I will be applying for a housing association property once I get more ideas on what areas are like. But I’d also be happy to rent private. I’m not too fussed about being as close to Glasgow city centre, I’m more than happy with a nice town with a few shops. Here in Dunoon there’s barely anything at all! So a bit of a variety would be great. But I would rather a nice area to live with good public transport and nice schools and parks more than anything. When I move I also wouldn’t be employed but will be looking for employment during school hours, so hopefully somewhere that I can get kids to school then shoot off for work on public transport. I’ve not set foot in anywhere at all but once I’ve recommendations on areas what would suit I’ll be making a list and making visits at the weekends to have a look around towns and streets where some properties are for rent to get a feel of places.

Also to add I did have a look at East Kilbride areas but there’s so many. Any areas there which could fit what I’m looking for I’d be open to suggestions 😁 or any places to avoid in East Kilbride?

OP posts:
emmathedilemma · 05/01/2022 16:38

Have you done some searches for rental properties because I can hardly find anything in the whole of Glasgow with 3 beds for £700pcm or under. You might also find it hard to get a private rental without a guaranteed income.

heidbuttsupper · 05/01/2022 16:45

Hi OP
I am not overly knowledgable when it comes to EK but something like this may work for you:
www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/118196186
It's near the town centre and there is good bus links to Glasgow from here

Joanna9494 · 05/01/2022 17:02

Yeah I’ve had a look myself too, only places what come up really are airdrie and some in EK and that’s about it, think right now there’s hardly anything anywhere!

To be fair I would much prefer a house with a garden and looks like it would be a budget of around £800pm, which could possibly be affordable but cheaper would of course be better!

And with private rent, I’ve someone who can be a guarantee for me along with a great reference from my previous landlord.

If anyone else has any recommendations for airdrie areas/ East Kilbride areas to absolutely avoid it would be much appreciated!

I live in the Blairhill area of Coatbridge which is lovely. And most definitely not grotty. The high street is just like any other high street but there's a decent Asda and Tesco and the retail park is good with TK Max, M&S food, a new Superdrug, Matalan etc. There's also a Lidl. There's Drumpellier Park right on my doorstep which is really lovely which a huge kids playground and there's also some smaller ones as well as couple just more towards Airdre.
I love living here as its 20 mins on the train into Glasgow and 40 to Edinburgh and right next to the motorway.
People always come across very snobby here when I read the comments about Coatbridge but I've been here 5 years and couldn't be happier.

Joanna9494 · 05/01/2022 17:34

Thank you so much for your reply! See I’m not too fussed about a massive town, just better than the one here in Dunoon, (we literally only have Morrison’s, co op, charity shops, m&co and a couple small businesses and that’s it! Closest primark, b&m etc is a 20 minute boat and 10-15 minute train away ) so having at least some close by would be amazing! Along with a choice in supermarkets haha!

In your opinion is there anywhere to absolutely avoid in Coatbridge/ airdrie?

Also don’t suppose you know if there is much employment opportunities locally?

@Makeuplover

Mount Florida, Shawlands, Cathcart and Newlands are nice. For the West end, Hillhead, Partick and some parts of Anniesland are also good. Not much for the East End but Dennistoun is nice. Excuse me? Avoid Cardonald? Cardonald is a genuinely mixed area with houses costing up to £400,000. I know because I live here. It's got a fabulous sense of community, brilliant links to everywhere, good schools (my DS has 5 X As at Highers), great transport, bear both Braehead and Silverburn with a brilliant rugby club. Both Pollok and Bellahouston Parks are fabulous, as is Barshaw, plus football/ sports centres. So keep your judgement.
ISpyCobraKai · 05/01/2022 18:07

I actually was wanting to ask about Cardonald myself, as an area potentially to move to, though as a GA tennant so I'm aware wherever I move it's not going to be the best of the area.
I wouldn't move to Coatbridge or Airdrie though, especially without a car, I drive so am OK so long as my actual street is safe and I've a corner shop on foot, I'm fine, I don't have dependent children either.

OP, I'd go closer into town, Knightswood, Partick, Anniesland and surrounding areas.

My Dd lives in a safe part of Springburn, but I wouldn't go there if you need schools.

Also, be even more careful if you'll need HA.
The nicest places in theory, can have awful schemes.

heidbuttsupper · 05/01/2022 19:22

East Kilbride would be perfect for shops, the town centre has a big shopping centre with loads of shops & food places
eklife.co.uk/

The only areas I know in EK are The Murray, St Leonard's and Stewartfield. Stewartfield is pricey and not ideal for transport links.

Re employment, I suppose it depends what your skill set is? There would definitely be something. The tax office used to be based in EK (not sure if it still is) but there was always jobs going there in lots of different fields.

Rutherglen might be another area to look at?

Joanna9494 · 05/01/2022 19:25

What’s everyone’s thoughts on Cumbernauld? That could be another possibility? 🤔

OP posts:
hemhem · 05/01/2022 19:32

Personally I'd avoid a lot of places in East Dunbartonshire as its so expensive to get a house and the council tax is really high too compared to Glasgow. I have family in Kirkintilloch and they constantly complain about how run down the town centre is there. There are some parts of Maryhill/North Kelvinside in Glasgow which are lovely and you could rent a 3bed flat with a garden for £800-900/mth. Byres Road and the Botanic Gardens are within 15mins walk from there too. If you prefer more of a village feel but with good buses and trains try Stepps

hemhem · 05/01/2022 19:34

Cumbernauld has a big shopping centre but its quite ugly (1960s concrete everywhere). Cumbernauld village is nice

WouldBeGood · 05/01/2022 19:34

I think the areas you’re talking about would be a massive shock to the system after Dunoon @Joanna9494.

Have you visited them?

Joanna9494 · 05/01/2022 19:40

@wouldBeGood I’m originally from dewsbury in West Yorkshire so I’m used to living in a large town, Dunoon is a nice place to be but there’s just nothing here at all and think it’s time to move away. If we don’t like it or can’t settle we can always move back after a year or so ☺️

I think we are going to plan on having a couple weekends visiting different places such as airdrie, Coatbridge, EK, Hamilton, Motherwell and Cumbernauld and see what we think.

I guess we won’t really know what it’s like to be in a area until we actually live there really haha

OP posts:
WouldBeGood · 05/01/2022 19:45

Well, good luck!

Joanna9494 · 05/01/2022 20:13

Thank you! 😁

I hate to be rude, but you are really looking at all the worst areas.
I appreciate you've come from a not great area so not much bothers you, but it seems odd you don't want to go for the best areas, especially with kids.

Glassisalwaysgreener · 05/01/2022 20:25

Sorry but I agree with CobraKai. Airdrie and Coatbridge are grim. Really deprived, if you’d asked me to pick the worst towns in Scotland to move to they’d have been on the list. Posters living there who are invested in the area might tell you differently but I assure you I know both these areas well as I have family there and they are dreadful.

Someone mentioned Springburn and Motherwell which are also awful. Sorry to be blunt but it’s better to know now than to move there and wish you’d known.

How about closer to Glasgow city centre? Knightswood and Patrick and north Kelvinside are all within your budget with some nice houses and good schools.

Would be interested to know where I'm Coatbridge you know well. Admittedly there are rough areas but there's rough areas everywhere. Some of the stories my friend who lives in the west end tells me are way, way worse than what I witness here. I'm not born and bred here so I'm not invested but can say hand on heart I live in a pretty nice area where some of the houses I could only dream of being able to afford.
