Moving to Glasgow areas

I’m from Dunoon and want to move away I’ve currently been looking at the airdrie/ Coatbridge area and looks quite nice. I’m initially looking for somewhere with a decent town centre with decent supermarkets a few shops, some places to go with the kids, parks and greenery and nice areas with nice schools. Plus I don’t drive so good busses and trains. Does anyone have any recommendations of where to avoid in airdrie/ Coatbridge areas? Or know if anywhere else what might be a good fit for me and my family? Thanks in advance!

If you can make do with a 2 bed then go for Uddingston. It’s lovely and safe, 2 great schools and a nice main street. Trains into Glasgow/Edinburgh regularly

ISpyCobraKai · 05/01/2022 23:47

@ladylunchalot
I have Brittle asthma so hospital is important to me.
I'm currently nowhere near an A&E but need to be near QEUH.

ISpyCobraKai · 05/01/2022 23:52

@ThrobbingToothacheOfTheMind
A good friend of mine owns in Knightswood and I'd live there.
Tbf, neither of us need to think about schools or young children though, that makes a massive difference, as does driving.

ThrobbingToothacheOfTheMind · 05/01/2022 23:52
@ThrobbingToothacheOfTheMind I did for over a decade and many friends still there. We can't all afford the West End so it's the next best thing.
I suppose a lot of Maryhill is decent enough. I’ve lived in 2 streets there and had less bother there than in Kirkintilloch which is on a pps “nice list” up thread.

(Btw are you a Die Antwoord fan?)

Puffalicious · 05/01/2022 23:58

I'm 5 minutes from the QEUH and less than 10 to my sister in Jordanhill, 15 to Byres Road and the University. Cardonald is a classic, Glasgow area. Pollok is not good and it's relatively nearby- you need to know your areas.

Knightswood/ Scotstoun is very similar - and not at all grim. When you get nearer Yoker, not so great. The problem with Glasgow is that the margins are narrow and a few streets can make a massive difference. Clydebank/ Dalmuir/ Old Kilpatrick is similar- some lovely areas, some much less salubrious.

The East End can be great (I love Dennistoun, lived there and still have many friends there) but other areas can be a minefield.

I just can't stand this idea that everyone wants/ needs to be in Bearsden/ Milngavie/ Lenzie/ Newton Mearns. I certainly don't want to be, it's not my vibe/ preference at all.

ISpyCobraKai · 06/01/2022 00:01

I live in a "posh", small town down the Clyde, still has it's bad bits!

Yup. Absolutely. My best friend teaches in Milngavie- people forget there are dodgy bits there too and many social issues, it's just less so and not a common perception.
ISpyCobraKai · 06/01/2022 00:06

As I said above though, so long as my street/immediate area is safe and I can walk to a corner shop I'd be OK with most areas, though I do need to be where an ambulance will take me to QEUH as unfortunately I do need them occasionally.

ThrobbingToothacheOfTheMind · 06/01/2022 00:07

What areas are dodgy in milngavie?

Puffalicious · 06/01/2022 00:07

Also, I made a decision to be central, still within the city limits as I'm a city girl at heart and wanted that for my boys. My teens love city life- they can access it all easily- but have hill-climbing, mountain-biking trails within easy reach by car/ train. That's the beauty of Glasgow.

I love the countryside too and the sea and I still get access to those lots and lots.

I can't give you streets as it's not me who knows it inside out, but there are areas that are known for having social issues and poverty. Admittedly far fewer than would surround a typical area we're discussing, but she's worked in a primary school.there for 27 years so does know.
Ladylunchalot · 06/01/2022 00:12

Op, probably best to try and spend some time in different areas and see what works for you. We all look for different things in an area and there's good and bad everywhere.
I like where I live as there plenty of amenities around me and the countryside is close by, best of both.

Sorry to hear that, but glad you're close enough to the hospital, makes a huge difference Flowers

ThrobbingToothacheOfTheMind · 06/01/2022 00:17

Some of the streets near the londis shop in milngavie are a bit run down. That’s the only area that comes to mind. Assuming “social issues” means crime, I haven’t heard much about that. I’ll take your word for it. Wonder if your friend was my teacher 🤔

Anyway, sorry for derailing, OP.

ISpyCobraKai · 06/01/2022 00:19

@Puffalicious
Dd was so much happier when I moved her to a school in the West end.
The school here was failing her, but not only was it a much better school, she just loved being in Glasgow every day.

Wanlight22 · 06/01/2022 00:20

I'm from EK originally and there are good and bad parts too. The schools are good imo.It's more streets within areas but funny enough , the worse place I lived in was a private let in Stewartfield (regarded as one of the nicest parts). My youngest was bullied badly and local kids who lived in a very nice house deliberately wrecked our front garden . Parents didn't want to know. I know a few of the HA schemes there so if you have one in mind , I could probably find out for you . Coatbridge and Airdrie is fine in some parts too ,OP.
Yes some aren't so nice but there are some folk on here who need appreciate that not all of us can afford @ hoose in Shawlands or Kelvinside .

Maybe, she's been there forever Grin! I'm also a teacher in a different part of Glasgow for a similar amount of time. We're quite unusual as we've stayed in our original schools. We've both at the 'You taught my mum' stage for a number of years. Neither of us go on a trip anywhere and not be recognised by someone!GrinOt made fir interesting clubbing for some years, but not these days!Grin

Yes, there's crime at times, but I think she means more poverty, family issues, social work involvement etc as that's what she'll see. Not in any way like my big, city secondary, but it's there.

ISpyCobraKai · 06/01/2022 00:23

@Ladylunchalot
I'm not near a hospital
The nearest still isn't near and is terrible.
That's why the areas I'd move to might seem odd, but with no children and the need to be QEUH they'd suit me.
I wouldn't necessarily recommend them for a young family though.

Wanlight22 · 06/01/2022 00:24

I agree that there are some good parts of Cardonald and the East End . Met some of the best folk ever that come from there .

Yup, some kids really like that feeling. Different strokes.

Apologies for typos, I'm showing myself up here!

Any areas/ streets OP let us know and one of us will know. It really is quite specific at times where's to be recommended.

Kareq · 06/01/2022 00:28

The Op said they didn't drive though so they will need to be aware that in lanarkshire many houses that look in budget (like the one shown for Carluke) are actually in the outlying villages with almost no transport links and not the actual town itself

Puffalicious · 06/01/2022 00:30

Yeah!!! I've lived in both and love them for their true mix. I've lived in Cardonald 15 years now and exH moved back to Dennistoun, which he loves, as do my boys who are there some of the week: it's very modern with eclectic shops, bit like Shawlands used to be.

Both also happen to be very near a hospital if that's important (it is for me as DS3 has medical issues and I'm surprised I don't get invited to the Xmas night out I'm there so often!).

Wanlight22 · 06/01/2022 00:30

Ps that hoose that @heidbuttsupper put up, I wouldn't fancy it. Have a close relative who lives near there and alot of gangs hanging about there . Always thought that part of the Murray was grim.

See- it needs local knowledge, OP.
R0SEMARY · 06/01/2022 00:31

With respect, there’s no point in you lot arguing about most of these areas. Unless the OP can stretch to £700 for a 3 bed she’s struggling to get anything half decent, even a flat, anywhere near Glasgow.

£600 will be scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Plus most landlords won’t rent to someone on benefits.

And she needs to check the local housing allowances.

£700 would get her Rutherglen, Cambuslang, Croftfoot, Kings Park, East Kilbride, Toryglen, nicer parts of Paisley, Hamilton. All of which are fine OP.

And we’ve not even talked about schools - we don’t know if she needs primary or secondary.
