Moving to Glasgow areas

I’m from Dunoon and want to move away I’ve currently been looking at the airdrie/ Coatbridge area and looks quite nice. I’m initially looking for somewhere with a decent town centre with decent supermarkets a few shops, some places to go with the kids, parks and greenery and nice areas with nice schools. Plus I don’t drive so good busses and trains. Does anyone have any recommendations of where to avoid in airdrie/ Coatbridge areas? Or know if anywhere else what might be a good fit for me and my family? Thanks in advance!

@shouldistop

Coatbridge is a bit of a shit hole tbh, sorry if that offends anyone. I don't know airdrie but have heard people say the same.
I thought Airdrie wasn’t the best either. This would back that up

That's fair enough OP, back to Airdrie/Coatbridge it is.

nuggetschicken · 09/01/2022 12:07

I'd go for Hamilton or East Kilbride if you fancy the Lanarkshire area. Big parks, Calderglen and Chatelherault, and good train/bus services. East Kilbride is slightly better for shopping.
I don't know much about Motherwell but it has good transport links, I usually get the train down to England from there. There's a big nature reserve for walks.

EbonanzaScrooge · 09/01/2022 18:05

What about Clydebank OP? Lots of nice areas and good schools with decent price housing and great links to town!

MaxNormal · 09/01/2022 18:19

@SheWoreYellow that's fascinating. That's some contrast overall between Glasgow and Edinburgh!

Whoswhohere · 09/01/2022 19:15

I've lived all over Glasgow. You will be hard pushed to get a 3 bed with a garden as demand is outstripping supply and prices are sky rocketing.

Decent areas for your budget:
Hamilton (like a mini city within a city)
Uddingston
Cambuslang
Rutherglen (some areas)
East Kilbride (some areas)
Croft foot
Knightswood
Anniesland
Scotstoun (avoid the part near yolker)
Central Clydebank (whitecrook and faifley are rough, Parkhall is okay)
Old Kilpatrick
Balloch (most areas are okay and right on the west coast so have lovely beaches)

Areas I'd avoid:
Easterhouse
Most of Coatbridge
Wishaw
Motherwell
Blantyre
Tollcross
Parkhead
Ibrox
Govanhill
Drumchapel
Sighthill
Springburn
Most areas in Dumbarton (very towny)
Possil Park

I'd take some of that map with a pinch of salt. I've just looked at where I live and it's listed as 3rd most deprived and yet it's exclusively detached houses with prices around £250-350K

SheWoreYellow · 09/01/2022 19:57

Oh really? It’s always been accurate for me.

ElephantOfRisk · 09/01/2022 20:23

I've looked at some other areas I know and they are broadly accurate, I think it maybe doesn't go down granular enough and has added a "new build" (nearly 20 years old estate) to the neighbouring council estate which might even be below 3rd most deprived. This might not help when you are trying to hone down to a smaller area. The estate I'm talking about has, i would say c150 -200 houses though so not like it's just a couple of streets.

I grew up in Clydebank. Some of Central Clydebank is rough as hell (Holy City, for example) and lots of Whitecrook is lovely and some parts of Faifley are exclusively owned. You really, really need to know areas well. I moved out as soon as possible, too parochial for me, but friends have stayed and like it. My DH is from Hamilton and as nice as parts are, similarly lots of North and South Lanarkshire are very parochial and wouldn't suit some people.

All of Scotstoun is good, as long as it's Scotstoun and not Yoker (it's not Yolker btw).

Other areas are:

Cardonald/ Mosspark/ Craigton/ Bellahouston

Whoswhohere · 09/01/2022 20:58

I have Family living in Whitecrook and it's rough as toast. Once voted murder capital of the UK. By central clydebank I mean Drumry Road area where the high school and college used to be and the area before you reach Dalmuir. To be fair it's a hit or a miss wherever you go there and all the kids would go to the same schools so the area wouldn't make a difference.

I frequented Faifley and Duntocher as a teen and had family there at the time. I would absolutely not live there. There's about 2 good streets with privately owned housing and the rest are HA closes (where my aunt lived) and it was bedlam.

Yorker was an autocorrect.

I agree with hamilton. The op would probably get what she's looking for there within her budget.

Whoswhohere · 09/01/2022 21:01

Obviously my phone doesn't like the word Yoker

user2908143823142536475859708 · 09/01/2022 21:18

I've lived in a few places mentioned and they were shit holes.

Look on ilivehere.com for info on East Kilbride Grin

Knightswood and surrounding areas are also not great. Kirky is ok but town centre very run down and public transport is crap. Some of Maryhill is ok.

Avoid springburn and possil.

East Dunbartonshire get the best write up for schools if it's good schools you're looking for but I don't think there would be much available for your price range.

See, it's sometimes street by street: 2 good friends grew up in Whitecrook in lovely, family areas. I grew up in Duntocher and it's really, really mixed(I was admittedly in ' Spam Valley', the private, Wimpy houses): friends own at 450k House there.

Funnily enough Drumry Road area is the only area I would live in Clydebank (or Cochno Road), my niece has just moved into a beautiful, terraced house across from the police station, but it's bought and was expensive.

aquamarine1 · 10/01/2022 00:17

Which part of knightswood is rough? The ex-council houses are selling for over 200k and extensions going up all over the place.

Piggywaspushed · 10/01/2022 06:46

ilivehere.com is really not a good source of info. It makes everywhere sound awful!

user, you say you have lived in a few of the areas ,and then don't specify which. Knightswood is very popular. Everywhere has ropier areas but lots of parts of Knightswood are very pleasant.

Piggywaspushed · 10/01/2022 06:48

Not sure how much credence I'd give to someone who thinks Balloch is 'on the West coast' !

Iluvfriends · 10/01/2022 08:50

I wouldn't rule out Maryhill on someones say so op.
Maryhill road is a very long road which stretches from St Georges Cross (on the edge of City Centre) all the way out to Canniesburn toll at the start of Bearsden so there's quite a variety of areas and housing.
Maybe others can tell you a bit more about
St Georges Cross
Queens Cross
Wyndford , (The Barracks) avoid....in your face drug dealing and unsocial behaviour. Gang of young ones are out of control there just now. Robbing bikes off other kids and terrorising elderly residents.

Iluvfriends · 10/01/2022 08:55

Oops posted before i finished.

The Wyndford has a lot of great people that have lived there all their life and has a community spirit but unfortunately it's ruined by a minority.

Maryhill Road is over 7 miles long so lots of housing aling the way.

Dinoboymama · 10/01/2022 09:09

Duntocher is nice as are some of the other areas near it. There's only a few streets i would avoid. There is great Catholic school there which you do not need to be Catholic to attend. Its easy to get into Glasgow from. It has a village feel but still within a town and accessible.

I would avoid some streets in the middle of clydebank.

MaxNormal · 10/01/2022 11:09

Iluvfriends agree with everything you've said about Maryhill as a former resident.
I've got friends who live in the Wyndford and their bit is actually fine, a lot of owner occupiers. The high rises are bloody awful though.

Yes there are a lot of owners in the Wyndford, i believe it was once quite difficult to get a house there, it was very sought after. It's such a shame as it's great for kids on bikes etc as they can go a long way without having to worry about a road, esp around the big grassy 'field'.
MaxNormal · 10/01/2022 12:10

I can imagine, you're literally on the border with the West End. It's a shame there's problems now as you say it's a good community, plenty of decent people from a mix of backgrounds.

ISpyCobraKai · 10/01/2022 13:26

@Piggywaspushed
I was wondering how I'd managed to miss the beaches in Balloch when I go there to walk in the park!
I thought maybe they meant the Loch or there was another Balloch I'd never heard ofConfused
