Moving to Glasgow areas

I’m from Dunoon and want to move away I’ve currently been looking at the airdrie/ Coatbridge area and looks quite nice. I’m initially looking for somewhere with a decent town centre with decent supermarkets a few shops, some places to go with the kids, parks and greenery and nice areas with nice schools. Plus I don’t drive so good busses and trains. Does anyone have any recommendations of where to avoid in airdrie/ Coatbridge areas? Or know if anywhere else what might be a good fit for me and my family? Thanks in advance!

Have a look at Rutherglen and Cambuslang. Paisley, Renfrew and surroundings as well.

Your budget is really tight tbh and there's not a massive amount of property around at the moment but it's a good idea to visit places - the above are all handy for Glasgow on public transport as well as having a sense of being places in their own right.

Another option might be moving across the Clyde but not necessarily as far as Glasgow - have you looked at Ayrshire? Kilmarnock, Ayr etc might be worth a try. Once you're not dealing with a ferry and long roads with limited bus service, the public transport options will seem amazing.

WouldBeGood · 05/01/2022 20:34

Surely not Kilmarnock?

alicesfavouritepen · 05/01/2022 20:36

@ISpyCobraKai

I hate to be rude, but you are really looking at all the worst areas. I appreciate you've come from a not great area so not much bothers you, but it seems odd you don't want to go for the best areas, especially with kids.
Yep you're right. Rude. I can't speak for everywhere but do know that both Cumbernauld and Coatbridge have lovely areas that would get you a great house for your budget. Yes Kirkintilloch and lenzie are probably nicer but you'd get a lot less for your money.
ditalini · 05/01/2022 20:37

@Glassisalwaysgreener

Sorry but I agree with CobraKai. Airdrie and Coatbridge are grim. Really deprived, if you’d asked me to pick the worst towns in Scotland to move to they’d have been on the list. Posters living there who are invested in the area might tell you differently but I assure you I know both these areas well as I have family there and they are dreadful.

Someone mentioned Springburn and Motherwell which are also awful. Sorry to be blunt but it’s better to know now than to move there and wish you’d known.

How about closer to Glasgow city centre? Knightswood and Patrick and north Kelvinside are all within your budget with some nice houses and good schools.

Op is not moving to any of those Glasgow City Centre areas for £700 pm for 3 beds any time soon. It wasn't that long ago that a 3 bed flat in my street was £750pm but something's gone crazy with the rental market.

It's not just that the same 3 bed would now be around £1300pm, it's that there is virtually no property available at any price.

Joanna9494 · 05/01/2022 20:38

The reason for asking about those areas is because those areas are in my budget. And it’s not that not much bothers me, cause in fact that’s why I’m asking on here where I should avoid.

Can I ask, do you both say these are the worst places due to spending lots of time in those areas or from hearing from others about those places?
Cause to be fair you could live in one of the nicest areas and still have some right horrible folk living on your doorstep.

So that’s simply why I’m asking for advice from anyone who personally knows those areas.

@WouldBeGood

Surely not Kilmarnock?
Don't move there if you don't like it, but I know Dunoon very well and Kilmarnock will hold no fears for op (and there will be property in her price range).
WouldBeGood · 05/01/2022 20:41

Fair enough. Crack on

Joanna9494 · 05/01/2022 20:43

Also to add, I do have a family member who lives in shotts, so those areas I’ve looked at are close to her too, but as others have said here the main reason I’m asking about these areas is due to my budget.

Yes I know there’s rough areas everywhere, I’d like to avoid those areas that’s why I’m asking for here to avoid in these specific areas.

ISpyCobraKai · 05/01/2022 20:48

You mentioned you'll be applying for a HA home.
If that's the case, you definitely need the best area.
I've said I have a HA home, would never give it up, but you have to be so careful particularly with young children.

Joanna9494 · 05/01/2022 20:57

@ISpyCobraKai I completely agree that when it comes to the kids I need to be careful where I choose. If we can find a nice quiet street with a nice school near by then I’d be happy with that.

To be fair after being homeless nearly a year we are just desperate to get a home somewhere and think this is the year to make the move across the water.

I’m sure I’ll get some suggestions/ recommendations on where to avoid in the areas I’ve chosen, thanks for your input ☺️

ISpyCobraKai · 05/01/2022 21:07

I do understand that, especially since I spent 18 months in a homeless flat on a scheme, however, you seem to be looking at not so good areas and your children will be going to school there.
Are you looking to get a private rental to get out of Dunoon, and then apply for HA from the new area?
If so, rent in the best area, even if you are a bit crammed in for a while, it'll pay off in the long run.

Joanna9494 · 05/01/2022 21:09

We probably will do that to be fair to get a feel of the area then that way we could save up a bit extra and find somewhere a bit bigger/ better area once we get on our feet.

Op, I live in North Lanarkshire and have done so all my life and it's fine. Like everywhere else there are good and not so good areas. What I love about living here is the fact that Glasgow and Edinburgh are very easy and quick to get to and then travelling south on the m74 is close by.
You get a lot more house for your money here. I know Motherwell pretty well and Shotts (I work there!) and am Wishaw born and bred.
Another town that might be good for you is Carluke, decent transport links, good schools and a big Tesco Grin

Ladylunchalot · 05/01/2022 21:56

Sorry forgot to say, one of the biggest employers around here is NHS, plenty of vacancies, especially at the moment!

MaxNormal · 05/01/2022 22:33

@Puffalicious yes and I was a bit surprised to see Maryhill on the shitlist as well.

ISpyCobraKai · 05/01/2022 22:37

@ladylunchalot
Springburn has a massive Tesco and Govan has a huge hospital.
They mean nothing when you have young children.

MaxNormal · 05/01/2022 22:38

OP I've just had a quick look on Rightmove to see what your budget gets you just now and there's plenty of places coming up in the greater Glasgow area.
Would it help if you had a look and posted the links or areas of your favourites and we could give you feedback as to what the area is like?

MaxNormal · 05/01/2022 22:41

A PP just mentioned Carluke, here's a nice looking house with a garden in your budget for instance:

Smallkeys · 05/01/2022 22:45

Suprised no one mentioned hamilton ..

AmIgoinghomeforXmas · 05/01/2022 22:45

If OP has come from Dewsbury she is going to able to manage Kilmarnock without any problems.
There are worse places to live.

Ladylunchalot · 05/01/2022 22:47

@ISpyCobraKai I was so glad to be living near a hospital when ds was younger as he was very accident prone! Also when he was diagnosed with epilepsy, being able to get to the hospital within 7 minutes cannot be underestimated.

ThrobbingToothacheOfTheMind · 05/01/2022 22:49
@Puffalicious yes and I was a bit surprised to see Maryhill on the shitlist as well.
Seriously? Do you live there?

Nikki360 · 05/01/2022 22:55

I live in East Kilbride have done for nearly 23 years. Took me a while to settle we moved from the Southside of Glasgow. I love it now although it's got to big which is a shame. It has nice places to walk a lovely park and a loch. Lots of shopping areas.

MaxNormal · 05/01/2022 23:02

@ThrobbingToothacheOfTheMind I did for over a decade and many friends still there. We can't all afford the West End so it's the next best thing.
