The railing never ends.

No resilience wankery, all railing welcome, along with good things or humorous asides.

Am I the only one who is worried about the environmental impact of all the bloody testing they are proposing. It is bad enough all this stuff gets shipped from China without all the waste associated with everything to do with this pandemic. So much for COP26.

If they announce schools not going back in January I will sob into my wine and think long and hard about how to protect my mental health. Through the entire pandemic I have not been allowed furlough yet had loads of demanding and important work dumped on me (health role) but not classed as essential key worker therefore couldn't access key worker spaces at school. Yet other friends were able to access spaces on the most tenuous links

rookiemere · 13/12/2021 10:14

No I agree @Scottishskifun and it's because restricting numbers in households is free and I suppose is a vector factor, whereas the football definitely costs money and votes.

Yes bolstering the NHS as opposed to giving a one off £500 voucher would be good, but it's now too late for this current wave. It's a bit like seeing a tsunami wave in the distance ( to use her own words) and doing everything you can to stop it impacting, but ultimately you know it's coming ready or not.

Personally at this point there's a lot to be said for the BG approach provided people can keep their nerve and accept a certain death rate as a result. But SG will never do that and ultimately suspect BG won't either.

MLMshouldbeillegal · 13/12/2021 10:16

There are people on the covid boards testing daily. families of 5 people, 35 tests a week.

It's LUNACY.

I was just listening to a podcast about the black death, 60% of the population of Europe wiped out. Kinda puts things in perspective.

Schools MUST go back in January.

Lockdownbear · 13/12/2021 10:17

I've thought about the environmental impact too. The test kits being shipped from China, then them ending up in landfill.

Fuck knows what people will think when they find all these plastic things in the ground in a 1000 years time.

Someone is making money out of them.

Unless the NHS numbers are wild I can't see how they can justify closing schools. But it wouldn't surprise me, but I also know if they close early they won't open straight after the NY.

How can they close schools without a furlough scheme in place how are parents meant to juggle it?

Scottishskifun · 13/12/2021 10:26

@rookiemere exactly so then it's not really about protecting health which they always bleeding on about its about money and politics. Which is no surprise but they hide behind it!

They have had 18 months to improve NHS resilience but like ventilation in schools known well in advance they just ignore the big costly problems and go for small fry to be shown to be doing something and the classic line "I'm not going to apologise for protecting lives....."

They know people aren't going to comply and in my area at least the police are unlikely to enforce against the vast majority of people!
We will carry on with our plans unless the companies cancel, we will still travel and we will still see family and friends. Like many I am done being dictated to for something which cannot be controlled. You can't build sea defenses out of sand!

ResilienceWanker · 13/12/2021 10:31

Not at all 2022herewecome! But the environmental implications seem to have been forgotten waaaayyyy before now (disposable masks disposed in the streets, plastic gloves, removing the ability for people to take public transport rather than driving, coffee shops not accepting refillable cups as a covid risk, testing testing testing and so on). I can see that there is a need to weigh the various priorities, and it does seem petty to moan about plastic if it is actually saving lives, but I'm not 100% sure that weight is being correctly placed at the moment! And surely the argument that "its easier/ more hygienic/ cheaper/ safer to use disposable things" is exactly the mindset we've been trying to get out of for the past decade...

I was actually quite zen about things. I thought the Swinney bluff about more restrictions was just bluster and trying to get cash off WM and we'd just get "ah, we've looked at things but have decided there's no need to change anything right now/not proportionate/ those stingy gits aren't giving us cash.." (delete as appropriate) on tuesday as for the past few threats. But now they're saying more restrictions are inevitable and will be announced tomorrow, and I've got worried again. If they don't have cash to compensate businesses for directly closing stuff, I can't see what else it can be other than closing/ restricting things that don't make money or employ people directly, and making those restrictions indirectly affect the other businesses by starving them of custom. So large gatherings, schools, probably church services, council run stuff, limiting opening hours/ no alcohol (a la tier 3 last year) and so on... And almost certainly their lovely vaccine passports to do anything at all. Aaaaarrrrfghhhh....

WoodstockJ · 13/12/2021 10:33

I too will sob into my wine if the schools close early/in Jan.
I work for the NHS (from home) so furlough was never on the cards. My husband has a very demanding self employed job (no furlough for him) and is not a key worker so the kids were at home during both school closures. I don’t think I could do it again- homeschooling and working tens of hours of overtime every week due to the workload that covid brings to our service.
My kids are older (13 & 15) but the little one needs quite a lot of support with school work. I don’t think either will cope well with another closure, I would be extremely concerned about the effect on their mental health.

ElephantOfRisk · 13/12/2021 10:34

I'm with you ski. I don't have millions of stuff on but I'm carrying on unless it's shut.

It's utterly ridiculous that we are in this position again. I'm sick of the scare tactics. Clearly those in power and with more insider knowledge than us weren't scared of catching or spreading covid last year so what was that all about then?

It's criminal what's been done. There are undoubtedly more people who have/will die from restrictions rather than covid. More that have their lives ruined by restrictions rather than covid. So essentially they've decided that it's okay to die from cancer, heart disease, suicide etc but not from covid.

Pootle40 · 13/12/2021 10:35

Fucks sake. I just saw a Scotsman headline saying the unions are urging schools to close early. What is this utter madness ?!

Pootle40 · 13/12/2021 10:37

@ssd

Railing against mn on xmas day. Will need to stay well off it. Usually its women moaning about their xmas presents. This year I'll be "can i make dinner whilst isolating/ should my children open their presents together whilst one is isolating etc etc. No one seems to be able to just make up their own minds these days. And if they can't its the government's fault, any government. I didn't realise people are still waiting for government's to tell them what to do.
Well said. I am sick to the back teeth of the 'what would you do' threads.
2022HereWeCome · 13/12/2021 10:37

@ResilienceWanker - I've worried about the environmental impact all along but accepted some of the madness at the start because people were generally trying to do the right thing. Then there seemed to be a relaxation / things moving in the right direction. BUT the recent narrative to test whenever leaving the house / every day etc has made me lose the plot when various ministers spent weeks not so long ago preaching about sustainability issues.

MaxNormal · 13/12/2021 10:43

There seems to be a lot of general anger about possible restrictions following so hard on the heels of COP26. Urging people to host randomers was a particularly special touch.

ssd · 13/12/2021 10:45

I honestly can't see another lockdown happening. The country can't take it. And people's mental health is rock bottom as it is. I've been awake most of the night with anxiety. I'm at work feeling like death warmed up.

Things need to stay open, people need to get the booster and we need to carry on. I'm not going to anything busy before Xmas but that's because I'm a worrier. I wouldn't stop anyone else going, dh was at his xmas do all day Saturday and dc at pubs and nightclub on Saturday too. And good on them.

It's the disposable being more hygienic which gets me. Just totally plays into everyone's fears. And the silly adverts about "could there be bacteria in your carpet or on your clean washing"? And the gallons of plastic bottles of sanitiser, and hand soap, and people washing their clothes because they've been outside... Before all this shite a minority of people were cleaning obsessed and they were mostly regarded as a bit weird. Now they are being told that they were right all along and that you're selfish and trying to kill granny if you're not cleaning, bleaching, anti-bac'ing, testing, disposing...

Urgh.

MaxNormal · 13/12/2021 10:50

MLMshouldbeillegal there is going to be an absolute epidemic of OCD after this.

TeenTraumaTrials · 13/12/2021 10:51

Same here ssd. We have our pre-Christmas family gathering this weekend and 2 DCs at schools this week. I just can't believe we are going to get through the week without one of them being a contact. It just feels like last year all over again. For me the anxiety isn't about catching Covid (although I'd be much happier if I'd had my booster - NHS Lothian I'm looking at you), but it's about the potential restrictions if even one family member is a contact.

Justmuddlingalong · 13/12/2021 11:11

Interested to see if new restrictions include limits on family gatherings, school closures and limited visits to those in residential care, when the Edinburgh Hogmanay is still being advertised.

rookiemere · 13/12/2021 11:12

@TeenTraumaTrials personally I'll be ignoring contact restrictions. I mean I will avoid things like the cinema, restaurants etc. and we'll do daily lateral flows, but provided they are clear then we'll still be walking the dog and hosting family ( one is possibly less risky than the other Grin).
I do think unfortunately that the NHS will be overwhelmed and there will be some form of lockdown, I just hope we can limp through Christmas first.
I'd hate it if schools were closed, DS is doing so well with his Nat5 preparation, but it does feel a bit inevitable at this point, sorry if I'm doom mongering and my heart goes out to anyone with primary aged DCs, well all of us really.

WouldBeGood · 13/12/2021 11:18

@MLMshouldbeillegal that testing is nuts!

OP posts:
WouldBeGood · 13/12/2021 11:22

If I were in charge I’d throw everything at the boosters. End free asymptomatic testing. Bring back shielding for the very few people who are genuinely at risk and pay them, should they choose to stay in. Scrap vaccine passports. Nick the idea upthread for Louisa Jordan discharge care. End self isolating. Stay in if you’re unwell, otherwise crack on. And use as much money as possible to ensure the NHS can cope better.

I honestly can't see another lockdown happening. The country can't take it. And people's mental health is rock bottom as it is. I've been awake most of the night with anxiety. I'm at work feeling like death warmed up.

Flowers ssd - its horrible to be feeling so grim at work on no sleep - especially as you can hardly take it gently at this time of year!

I agree on the carrying on thing too. People who want to be a bit more careful this year are able to, largely, and the booster is looking to be doing its job in keeping hospitalisations low compared to the number of infections. So why not just let people do their own thing - bearing in mind that there is a nasty illness around that affects some more severely than most, and its not 100% predictable who that will be. Without the whole "YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE" guff. We can't all hide away from all viruses for evermore.

MLM - yy on the cleaning! I'm definitely more on the lax side of things (always wash hands before/ after the usual suspects, but that's about it) and have never suffered from it as far as I'm aware. I went through one of those SG questionnaires the other week which was obviously trying to gauge opinions on food hygiene around Christmas time for some public awareness stuff (checking temp on fridge when its fuller than normal, not storing raw meat on top of salad - that kind of thing) - and I realised that I'm probably exactly the kind of person who they are trying to stop getting food poisoning! (Basically, if you can scrape the mould off, its good to go...) Having said that - we don't deal in raw meat, so there's one risk off the table.

IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021 · 13/12/2021 11:44

Urgh the mood just sucks. I have a uni exam tomorrow so should be studying but my concentration is shot to shit.

An online exam sucks anyway but worrying the schools will shut early. I have deadlines all week but zero focus and haven't even finished christmas shopping yet.

rookiemere · 13/12/2021 11:47

I hate writing Christmas cards at the best of times, but festive cheer was at a low point when I did them yesterday. £1.70 for the stamp plus price of card and I couldn't bring myself to write anything beyond hope you have a good festive period.

Saw this and thought you guys might appreciate it... Smile

"My friends husband won't let her visit friends or family.

He's made her stop all contact with them unless it's by phone or computer.

He reads and censors her comments on social media.

He makes her feel like she's going crazy for thinking that he's controlling her and that she's being ungrateful, after all he's only doing this because of how much he cares for her.

He doesn't want her going to the gym anymore so she doesn't go.

He doesn't want her going to work anymore, so she doesn't go.

He told her, you've got to rely on me for income.

He doesn't let her go out anymore unless it's for necessities, and when she does he makes sure he has people in place to guilt trip her about it.

By now she is so weary, scared and miserable she will do anything just to have a life and feel less lonely.

He wants her to have a medical procedure done, that she really doesn't want to have. He says if she does it for him, he'll let her start going to the pictures and for nights out with her friends again.

But even then, he wants her to download something on her phone so that he can trace her movements and keep track of exactly where she is every single day. He says it reassures him and that its for her own good - because only he can keep her safe.

And to top it all off he's always telling her he's only doing this because he cares.

Did I say husband?

I meant Nicola Sturgeon."

Scottishskifun · 13/12/2021 13:43

Wow its really quite frightening when you see it put like that!
Can't say I disagree with a single one though!
