Were Runrig ever secret?

Mrsjayy · 14/11/2021 23:01

They are good although I preferred their original singer . The concert was filmed not far from me.

IncyWinceySpiderWillies · 14/11/2021 23:02

Well that was anticlimactic

Anordinarymum · 14/11/2021 23:09

@IncyWinceySpiderWillies

Not for me. I could not believe I have lived a life and not known about them. They were phenomenal.
OP posts:
Bloodypunkrockers · 14/11/2021 23:14

They used to be good and have written some amazing songs

But one of them is my useless, hypocritical bastard of an MP, so a bit tarnished for me now

mibbelucieachwell · 14/11/2021 23:16

I'm not a Scot either but I am Scottish. Scots is one group/language within Scotland. There's also the Gaelic language which used to be the first language of people living in the Hebridean/Western isles, Doric in the north east and Orcadian and Shetlandic in the north isles.

Did you know some of us Scottish people are sensitive pedants? Grin

HirplesWithHaggis · 14/11/2021 23:16

Ah, cosy toes Pete. Massive disappointment.

I did prefer Donnie tbh.

TheRustler · 14/11/2021 23:22

I thought you were going to say bridies. Or dark chocolate Tunnocks, at the very least.

TheRustler · 14/11/2021 23:22

Or Two Doors Down.

Well this is 'Scotsnet' so right back at ya :)

@mibbelucieachwell

Used to be the first language? Still is for lots of us.

I've obviously got the pedant thing down pat.

WouldBeGood · 15/11/2021 09:29

I was not expecting that @Anordinarymum 🤣🤣

PlausibleSuit · 15/11/2021 09:33

Thought this was going to be tablet. Or rowies.

mibbelucieachwell · 15/11/2021 09:56

It's the conflation of a few artists/products with Scotland/Scottish people/some ephemeral Scottish identity that gets me. An assumption that all Scottish people must love Runrig/The Proclaimers/Whisky and Irn Bru.

Scotland also has some fantastic jazz and classical musicians. Emilie Sande is an example of a pop musician who doesn't feel the need to sell her Scottishness.

Not to take away from your enjoyment of a group you've discovered OP. Always satisfying. Enjoy. (Obviously I know you don't need 'permission' from a Scottish person)

Like I said I am sensitive to the Scottish identity thing . It has become politicised by the SNP and I find it exclusionary.

It's interesting to hear about first language Gaelic speakers @lovablequalities . The only person I personally know is a lady in her nineties from Lewis who didn't speak English until she went to school.

SirChenjins · 15/11/2021 10:06

Scotland has never kept Runrig secret Confused

Anyway, I'm glad you've come across their music, they were/are very good - although Donnie was the best.

@mibbelucieachwell - I'm right there with you. There's too much conflation of Scottish/SNP/Scotland/nationalist politics up here imo.

buddhasbelly · 15/11/2021 10:06

@mibbelucieachwell Gaelic was and is the first language out with the western Isles. For my partner, his family and a fair few of our friends, Gaelic is their first language. We're in our 30s Smile
