@Scottishskifun sounds awesome. Have a great day.

@ssd I've been awake since 4 and the idea of a long day is not fun.

Hoping it brightens up a bit before I leave as it's still dark.

titsintiers · 27/09/2021 08:06

Have an amazing holiday @Scottishskifun I'm not even slightly envious

rookiemere · 27/09/2021 08:11

So jealous @Scottishskifun , it's raining cats and dogs here although rookiedog disappointed not to see any actual cats.

I'm really hoping we get away to Tenerife at half term, I'm fully committed now and have bought my travel shampoo and conditioner along with travel wash. Currently deciding if we should fork out for a case ( £65 return Shock) or if I can squeeze all my clothes into a cabin case.

I'm almost dithering if we should go to Bond or not this weekend as cinema might be busy for once. Don't want anything to jinx our chances of going.

WouldBeGood · 27/09/2021 08:31

Have a lovely time @Scottishskifun!

@rookiemere I’d probably be tempted to skip the cinema, apart from anything else there’s a hideous cold rife. DD is really rough with it and off work.

@ssd and @Groovee, solidarity with the railing against early waking. 💐

Don't tempt me scottishskifun getting anywhere at all these days makes you feel as though you've had a lottery win, can't beat the elation of actually being away!

ssd · 27/09/2021 09:14

Yes, i have a theory about this cold thats going round, ds had it too, he was in bed for days. Felt awful. Its so similar to covid, i think its a form of covid. I dont think this awful cold has been around before, i think its different to older colds or flu. I think in the future they'll discover covid mutated to other things that dont show on rhe pcr tests and this is one of them. It doesn't seem to be as life threatening as covid so thats good.
But thats my theory anyhow.

Lockdownbear · 27/09/2021 09:31

You sure its not a proper flu?
I've had flu once and it was nothing like the cold. It kick off with a cough, then temperature, it didn't give me the sinus pain or sore throat that I'd normally get with a miserable cold.

My other thought is SD hasn't done people's immune system any favours. Both last year when kids went back in August and this year in May we all landed really heavy colds.

mapleleavesreturn · 27/09/2021 09:34

ssd I've been having similar thoughts, that perhaps the tests are less effective at capturing covid infections in the vaccinated etc. But on the other hand autumn is always a low point for viruses and they've been well predicted to have a field day now too as lockdowns suppressed circulation of all viruses, so had to say really.

Best to take positive steps to be as healthy as we can be.

ssd · 27/09/2021 10:32

Im now railing against the weather. I have loads of washing and i want a couple of dry sunny days to get it out. I got a tumble dryer 2nd hand and its rubbish. It works fine but its got a sensor thingy that senses when the clothes are nearly dry and it stops drying. But they arent dry enough for me so im up and down turning it on again. Its so annoying. Ive set it to high and cupboard dry and its still dampish. Wish id realised this and just bought a cheap old fashioned thing that has no sensor and just dries the buggers.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 27/09/2021 10:36

I don’t think it’s COVID, I think it’s other respiratory viruses hitting harder because of ‘immune debt’ - the distancing, masks etc have meant that none of us have had the level of regular exposure and immune priming we would generally get, so everyone is a bit more susceptible to bugs in general. Kids especially are being hammered by RSV (confirmed by immune panels) and paed wards are unusually busy.

WouldBeGood · 27/09/2021 10:49

It is very cold: 8 degrees here 😱

It seems that staying home and staying safe have brought their own consequences, with the effects of other bugs, nastier for children.

Dd is 19 and has been in bed with the thing she has since Friday straight after her work and off today, still floored.

ElephantOfRisk · 27/09/2021 11:38

Sorry to hear about all the poorly folk. Hope they get better soon. I had a night away for scattering BiLs ashes. It was lovely weather and actually a lovely event, very calm and peaceful just like BiL was. then a lovely catch up with family and friends which he would have loved. Lots of hugs exchanged, but hey ho - people needed them.

In more anti railing, we are going to pick up our new car today - hope it's got petrol in it!

mapleleavesreturn · 27/09/2021 11:43

Loads of bugs doing the rounds, we've not had a single week so far where one or other kid has been off.

I hate sensor tumble dryers too ssd they are rubbish. When I got a new one it has 'outdoor dry'. If you google yours you might be able to find a trick to bypass the sensor. Who actually wants damp washing out of a tumble?

mapleleavesreturn · 27/09/2021 11:44

elephant glad to hear that the event went well - was a beautiful day yesterday.

Good luck with the car pick up!

Lockdownbear · 27/09/2021 11:46

Mine has a sensor that can be set to iron dry (slightly damp), cupboard dry (my normal) and extra dry which I occasionally use if a load has 90% dry and some last corners that need dried off.

Coquohvan · 27/09/2021 12:00

Enjoy your break @Scottishskifun
We’re looking forward to ours, swimming in the sea and sand under our feet.

Some staff at the practice have nursery age children seems croup is doing the rounds atm.
Wishing a speedy recover to those suffering.

WouldBeGood · 27/09/2021 12:06

Glad it went well @ElephantOfRisk.

And a new car is exciting!

OP posts:
ElephantOfRisk · 27/09/2021 12:16

Thanks folks. The excitement will be slightly delayed as we are picking it up and bringing it nearly home as it's going straight in to be ceramic coated. It might be Thursday or Friday before it sets a tyre on the driveway. The old one is 10 and a half so DH has been saving and waiting a while for a new car.

I'm glad holidays are being had and folks are looking forward to various breaks and potential holidays. Even in normal times we can't book for next year this early as DH needs to wait and see if he gets his holiday allocation and that's usually about February.

ssd · 27/09/2021 14:39

Glad the day went well too @ElephantOfRisk, it must have been very emotional for you all.

ElephantOfRisk · 27/09/2021 16:15

Thanks @ssd, it was emotional but actually not sad, he loved walking the banks of the tweed so we scattered the ashes in the river and all dropped in flowers, was lovely watching it float downstream. Then we had a laugh as some of the ashes got on DH's shirt which he brushed off in the pub, which BiL would have enjoyed.

ssd · 27/09/2021 16:26

Nice when its so personal and it would mean a lot to the person who died too. And he even made it to the pub with you all Grin

WouldBeGood · 27/09/2021 16:28

Just stumbled over this Swiss analysis of mask studies, showing that they are pretty useless and in a lot of places, like the UK, rates went up when the mask mandate came in

That all sounds very lovely @ElephantOfRisk. And a bit of humour always helps!

ResilienceWanker · 27/09/2021 19:50

I'm soooooo jealous of Greece! It's minging here today.

And yes elephant - I'm sure BIL would have loved his trip to the pub!

Hope the early risers get a better night too.

I'm railing about CS job applications. I'd just psyched myself up to faff with all the behaviours and STARs and success profiles and whatnot, and had prepared my carefully crafted 250 word responses in a word document. Went to paste them into the webform, and it's not 250 words - it's 1600 characters they actually need. Including spaces and paragraphs. So I spent a good couple of hours decimating my beautiful text, replacing ands with &s, removing not-strictly-necessary punctuation and changing my perfect words for shorter ones. The absolute bastards. Anyway, it's submitted now. I've totally gone off them, though.

shouldistop · 27/09/2021 20:17

Railing about the fact the baby (and ds1 too) has another cold! He only just got over the first one. So that's another week or two disrupted sleep Sad
