It appears numbers are decreasing here too - a couple of weeks ago I was getting multiple emails a day from school about positive cases and that's slowed considerably. DS is S2 and he had his jab after school on Wednesday, bit of a headache yesterday and a stiff arm but back to normal this morning.

A friend of mine who lives a fair distance away, she's been posting on Facebook about how worried she is about her DH, how he's in hospital, how he's so ill, how she's so worried.... lo and behold her DH is a crazy antivaxxer who is fully into the Bill Gates and chip theory. 2 weeks in hospital with Covid as a consequence. Stupid, stupid man.

Thanks dancemom. Finally seems hospitalisations are going down pretty consistently now, following from cases having been declining for a couple of weeks. I'm really hoping deaths will go down too. Scottish deaths are over 25% of all UK (covid) deaths today, which is a bit shocking! Hoping it's just a numbers game and we're at a peak now corresponding with a hospitalisation peak a week or so ago, and a case peak about 3 weeks ago... Like in July and January. Fingers crossed and all.

sartorius · 24/09/2021 18:16

Think the in hospital "with" Covid or "because of" Covid must be a big factor in hospital numbers at moment.
BBC website quoting ONS saying 1in 45 has COVID in Scotland at moment (double number in England)
With prevalence as high as that there'll be fair few folks turning up at hospitals having broken a leg/heart attack/brain haemorrhage etc who also happen to test positive for Covid

ResilienceWanker · 24/09/2021 19:15

Yes, exactly (though presumably that is lagging a bit as the ONS data is from the previous week/ fortnight - I assume the actual figure is a bit lower now). As covid goes up in the population that'll be reflected in hospital numbers just by "chance", as well as a certain, albeit heavily reduced percentage of cases having treatment for covid complications. And some of those people will die from non-covid heart attack/ haemmorage, sadly, so will be recorded in the figures.

But there does seem to be a pattern in that hospitalisations peak a bit later than cases and then fall, and then deaths a week or so after that. Reflecting the timescales involved in both the Covid and non covid illnesses progressing.

but now we'll be told off for having that conversation again Wink

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 24/09/2021 19:34

Yes you will @ResilienceWanker GrinGrinGrin

I see Devi’s on Twitter this afternoon encouraging us all to wrap up warm and socialise outdoors to help NHS staff morale this winter. Not sure that one’s going to be a PR winner come November!

I am a bit concerned to see the NHS struggling so much at the moment though. Just don’t really feel like it’s the public responsibility to deal with that through being more uncomfortable and isolated all autumn and winter. The whole country’s morale feels pretty low at the moment, and I don’t think warnings of difficult winters ahead are helping much.

It was over 6000 last Sat! Great to see the drop.

mibbelucieachwell · 25/09/2021 15:11

Devi can do one as far as I'm concerned.

Someone I know tested positive for covid recently as did their partner. They're asking someone to drive their DC who has recovered from covid to school for them so as not to break the rules. This makes me despair. It's as if people think they must appease the wrath of this God Covid or something. If they were to ask on MN if it was reasonable to drive themselves no doubt many posters would be quick to condemn them as selfish and taking unnecessary risks. Cos obviously that would be the day their car broke down and they would definitely pass covid on to the recovery driver, who would then most likely kill his granny with it.

I'm considering going to a short, local concert this evening. The usual demographic is quite elderly so audience numbers might be quite low. For that reason alone I'd like to support it, but the thought of sitting there with a mask is putting me off.

mibbelucieachwell · 25/09/2021 15:12

Oops thought this was the railing thread. Blush

Excellent news about today's numbers. Thank you again Dancemom

Coquohvan · 25/09/2021 15:56

Well done @dancemom for keeping us updated with the figures 👍

I’ve been watching the serious/critical cases, those stats for us are coming down and the rUK are showing a decline as well.
Devi’s advice can do one, sit outside get frozen to the bone ah right.

DollyMixtureLulus · 25/09/2021 15:57

They're asking someone to drive their DC who has recovered from covid to school for them so as not to break the rules. This makes me despair.

Why? Presumably the children are dismissed into the playground and must be picked up by an adult. I've never ever worked in a school or heard of a school having a straight-to-car dismissal.

mibbelucieachwell · 25/09/2021 16:13

Secondary school age child. Too far to walk.

dancemom · 25/09/2021 17:25

@mibbelucieachwell and @Coquohvan you're welcome!

Surely even if they park a bit away so they'll not risk bumping into someone. It still seems a bit mad to me though that the DC is still going to school. Surely he could catch it from his parents at any point, especially if they both have it and the child is not vaccinated.

DollyMixtureLulus · 26/09/2021 08:14

Well, maybe they aren’t feeling great. I had it very mildly but with the headache and dizziness wouldn’t have felt safe driving on the worst days. Plus no doubt some nosy neighbour would be peeking out of their curtains.

It still seems a bit mad to me though that the DC is still going to school.
That’s how I caught it. I was the second teacher infected in the same class….

Instead of immediately isolating 2 or 3 children, 28 had two weeks of disrupted education with supply teachers. I genuinely don’t see that as the better option.

Haudyourwheesht · 26/09/2021 08:23

Well, I see the point of not sending home whole clusters based on contacts only, but surely if you're living in a house with folk who have tested positive you run a pretty high risk of contracting it at any point. I'm very much of the 'treat it like a common cold' thinking but logically, if we're trying to limit the spread...

NoMontaguesOrCapulets · 26/09/2021 09:15

We're in that situation at the moment - three out of four of us have covid so according to the guidelines I should send the covid-free member of the household to school tomorrow which seems bonkers. Given that I have to make his meals, help him in the shower etc, I can't really keep away from him. He won't be going to school!

mibbelucieachwell · 26/09/2021 10:15

The DC has had covid and done their 10 day isolation. Plan is for Tuesday . Parents aren't in bed.

WouldBeGood · 26/09/2021 10:35

They should obviously just drive their DCs to school as normal. It’s nuts that people are still having to worry about this stuff. It’s legal and perfectly reasonable.
