Things moved quickly so I just started a new one ...

I honestly don't see a lot of objections to the masks from teenagers. They are more likely to have their mask on (and correctly on) than their tie. It is hard to teach through though, I hope it will not be for much longer. If the teens were vaccinated.. but ideas on that seem to come and go.

I didn’t really understand the comment at the bottom of today’s figures ?

Does that mean they are experiencing a backlog ?

Scottishskifun · 30/08/2021 17:39

@RubyJam

It means they are seeing delays at the labs of over 2 days so means "daily" numbers aren't daily and actually a portion are from tests carried out earlier in the week.

The number of positives will still be correct for the week but means daily figures aren't as reliable due to delay.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 30/08/2021 17:39

@RubyJam yes, I take it to mean that some of today's figures would usually have been reported yesterday or even before then. I'm guessing they're a bit overwhelmed right now and turn around is slower. Of course that might also mean that there were some from today that won't be reported until tomorrow or the next day...

RubyJam · 30/08/2021 18:06

Oh dear

I did wonder if the labs were running behind

FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping · 31/08/2021 08:27

Does anyone have any idea how long test results are taking to come back at the moment? My 5 year old DD had a test yesterday afternoon (Edinburgh) and I don't know if we're likely to get a result today or not!

If your Nicola Sturgeon then less than 12 hours however for most they are saying up to 3 days!

When we tested in busy times we found it hit and miss and got one set within a day and the other two days later

KatySun · 31/08/2021 09:12

I cannot get a test this morning - DS is stuffed up and coughing. Nearest they are offering is 42 miles away, when normally we can go down the road or to the airport.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 31/08/2021 09:26

I had to get a test at the end of last week, and the results were back in around 24 hrs, although the guy was saying that it was generally taking longer and to expect 48-72 hrs. It was really hard to get a test in the first place though - our usual centre had no appointments for about 3 days when usually you can get one within an hour or so. I think I heard about shortages at one point as well. They seem to be completely overwhelmed just now.

Would keep refreshing it sometimes more pop up
WaitingOnTea · 31/08/2021 09:32

We got results in 12 hours - results this morning , tested yesterday afternoon - results were emailed through at 4 in the morning

Great service and I was worried the bank holiday would have held it up so pleasantly surprised.

Managed to book no problem at all too , local sites offered.

FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping · 31/08/2021 09:47

Oh god I hope it's not going to be three days! DD has an important hospital appointment on Friday morning and then is meant to be spending two nights with Granny whilst DH and I go down south for a wedding. If none of that can happen I'd rather know sooner than later!

FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping · 31/08/2021 09:48

We had no trouble getting a test at least - one was available within an hour at the walk in centre handily located at the end of our road!

IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 31/08/2021 09:50

Same day here yesterday (Dundee).

KatySun · 31/08/2021 11:17

Thank you, I must have just tried at a bad time!
I have now got one this afternoon a couple of miles away.

ssd · 31/08/2021 12:15

It won't be three days. I've had lots recently ( teacher) and always within a day / day and a half .
ResilienceWanker · 31/08/2021 20:25

Slightly bringing the railing over from the railing thread, but I'm a bit worried about the stubbornly high numbers, and today's chat from JL about rolling back certain relaxations - eg hospitality (why?? Aaaargh) when furlough is still available (i.e. soon as, as it finishes at the end of sept).

What do people think the odds are of this kind of thing actually happening, rather than it just being a warning shot? And schools? I'm pretty confident they won't close them, but going back to "old style" isolation of close contacts for 10 days (if not as far as bubbles, which were stupid and too disruptive I think even for SG)? Though on the other hand, I probably need to be a bit more zen about it really. We get what we get. Even if I end up needing to crack open the Gin

Cismyfatarse · 31/08/2021 20:38

My piss was further boiled today when, after a day of trying to communicate in a mask, I saw Nicola Sturgeon and wee Patrick Harvie, mask free, smugly sitting in close proximity to each other.

Why, oh why are pupils' educations being hampered by masks when our leaders get to speak without one?

One rule for them and another for us?

rookiemere · 31/08/2021 20:39

@ResilienceWanker I'm worried too. There isn't a lot they can feasibly do with furlough running out soon, but then I think they could reintroduce the ghastly non travelling scenario. But unless they go back to full lockdown there's no great way to reduce the numbers.

I don't know what's going to happen with schools, it's certainly not sustainable the way it's going. Headmaster sending daily bulletins on the numbers and high volume of pupils off ( including DS tomorrow as wanted to get in quickly with a PCR in case mine is positive).

We have now officially retaken the top spot in UK infection rates having overtaken Northern Ireland (who themselves have been having some problems recently). The other three UK nations are now on a downward trajectory, while Scotland clearly, erm, isn't. England, following their 'dangerously unethical experiment', remains stable with the lowest rates, and is now coming down gently again.

Any bets on what will happen in the next few weeks? Schools are due to go back in other UK nations which might cause some upward pressure, but my gut feeling is that this won't be anything too dramatic (not on the scale of Scotland's trajectory anyway). The usual suspects are pointing to Scotland and predicting the apocalypse, but somehow I don't think so. England's levels have been pretty consistent for the last 6 weeks or so as they have worked through a pretty steady level of infection (and hence steadily built up immunity), and I'm not convinced that there's that much scope left for huge peaks there. They have already done the opening up of the rest of society a month and a half ago, so they won't have the compound effect of opening+schools mixing at the same time as we did. Interesting times ahead!
