What do you mean, sorry? The lessons for primary school children are on again. We were informed of this before the end of term.

WouldBeGood · 27/07/2021 22:26

Well, no lessons last year! And pools here not open properly

Whilst we're on the subject - has anyone had their child attend lessons at the Michael Jamieson Academy at Glasgow Uni?

WouldBeGood · 27/07/2021 22:27

@StarryEyeSurprise I genuinely don’t get your devotion to the SG. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sorry, I'm not sure where you're seeing me talk about the SG here?

Haudyourwheesht · 27/07/2021 22:33

[quote shouldistop]@Haudyourwheesht surely most kids can dress themselves before p6?! My wee one about to start school dresses himself and I don't think he's particularly independent.

I dunno. I know my friend was a parent helper for her son's swimming lessons when he was in P6. I have no detailed knowledge of the ins and outs of swimming in Glasgow primary schools, just what I've heard.

Scottishskifun · 27/07/2021 22:40

I'm still in shock that swimming lessons are started so late in primary school here!
I started taking part in school gala swimming competitions from age 8! That wasn't a swim club thing it was local schools competing and I never went to private school!

StarryEyeSurprise · 27/07/2021 22:45

What age did your school lessons start?

@Haudyourwheesht I bet they just fanny around when they're in groups getting ready Grin

@StarryEyeSurprise

I was year 2 so 6ish (it was the 90s) they always did it as last lesson of the day so parents would pick up from the swimming pool and help their own child get changed or the TA would assist.

You were split into several groups those who couldn't swim at all those with widths and advanced, my mum taught me to swim very early on (was able to do lengths by 4) so I always remember myself and another girl were allowed to just do laps.

I also remember doing the bt challenge of swimming a mile when I was 9.

StarryEyeSurprise · 27/07/2021 23:01

Grand, I used to love swimming too but went to (paid for) lessons until P5/6. There must have been a few teachers for your class? We only have one but the class is split into two so week about ( I believe - Aug will be the first time going with them).

Scottishskifun · 27/07/2021 23:08

Yes there were 3 swim teachers per class and each year group did a different afternoon.

I started a swim club after being spotted at a gala when I was 9 which I loved but stopped age 12 as they wanted me to train from 5.30am and my mum said no too much!

Yes Amazing! More progress in a few months with MJSA than a years with Council lessons. I've tried a couple of other private providers too, one I just didn't like, the other I stopped as it was a duff time for us.
Lockdownbear · 28/07/2021 01:44

It's a disgrace that swimming isn't part of the circullum. I thought it was but there you go.
I always feel swimming opens up the opportunity to do water sports. Even if it isn't a favourite activity its a life skill that could well come into use when age, or injury gets the better of you. Swimming was bliss when pregnant.
I'm sure I swam with school in P5, although that might have been pester power with our teacher.
But I doubt swimming will be happening with covid.
Although I think one block of 10 lessons is nowhere near enough to get kids swimming.

StarryEyeSurprise · 28/07/2021 09:22

Thank Lockdownbear, that's good to know. Do you get to see them whilst they're having their lessons? Do they take place in a smaller pool? I'm a bit nervous about it!

Lockdownbear · 28/07/2021 10:34

The pool is a 25m pool MJSA have 2 lanes of it. The other lanes are open to students / staff at the same time.

Yes parents (one per family) can sit socially distanced at the side of the pool. They have pop-up tents cubicle things for the kids to get changed in. No showers though because of covid.

They have big box / platforms things in the shallow end for the small kids to stand on. And one really tiny 3yo they just sat her on the side as she waited her turn. Max of 4 in the beginner groups so not long to wait. But they often have the 4 of them with noodles moving at the same time. Instructor is in the pool with them.

The pool has its own lifeguard (who is 100% on the ball when it comes to people using phones.Blush)
And MJSA have another who is purely watching the kids. Keeping an eye when the instructors back is turned.

Seriously give them ago.

StarryEyeSurprise · 28/07/2021 11:14

Brilliant, thanks for all the info @Lockdownbear. I remembered the pool from my uni days so wasn't quite sure how it would work for non- swimmers. Glad to hear they keep such a good eye on them and I can be poolside as my wee one can be rather mischievous! Thanks again.

So, in England people are not going to have to test it self isolate if they’re double jagged. (Unless symptomatic) Makes sense: let’s hope we follow suit!

I took all my railing out at combat this morning, so am sunny of mood now, and hopeful

😂 I pissed off a independence at any cost pensioner supporter on social media which has made me chuckle as I pointed out referring to British colonial days was a bit out of touch and the oil industry wasn't going to pay for it! 😂 She even reported me..... And failed!

Its put me into quite a good mood that she got so annoyed!
No offence to any independence supporters but if people can't debate properly without mentioning the Victoria era then it's quite funny to me when they get their knickers in a twist!

titsintiers · 28/07/2021 13:54

It's probably been asked here but friends daughter tested positive yesterday for Covid. I went for a walk on Sunday with friend. If friend tests positive, when would I need to isolate?

If you went for a walk with the friend and not the daughter then no probably if the friend is showing no symptoms still. It's start of symptoms or positive test result minus 2 days for close contacts isolation so you probably just miss it.

You might want to get a PCR test tomorrow just in case if your concerned though (it's typically 3-5 day exposure) but the fact that you were outside would have reduced risk even if she had it at that point.

titsintiers · 28/07/2021 14:21

Thanks Ski, I'm not concerned just wondering what the position would be.

WouldBeGood · 28/07/2021 14:53

I don’t think you’d need to isolate at all, @titsintiers judging by the advice I was given by the hospital.

Someone told me to go for Ice Cream at Carol's in Elie. Had a fab ice cream then walked to the beach.
