@WouldBeGood

Glad you had a good time *@Pootle40*!

I’m thinking of going somewhere nice and hoping to be forbidden from returning 🤣

Sounds like a great idea. Going to Majorca has cemented our plans to downsize here when we retire (still at least 15 years away!) and own a small place in Majorca or Lanzarote.
Pootle40 · 19/07/2021 17:24

@latissimusdorsi I booked flights with jet2 and booked the villa on booking.com

Was really drawn to the idea of an all inclusive hotel as the kids would have loved it and I wouldn't have been doing any meals for a change but if just felt too much of a risk of getting stuck there is caught of someone in the hotel!

In saying that we had 5 or 6 dinners outside and we visited a water park.

I think if you test positive over there - they have allocated hotels for quarantine. I read somewhere that in Majorca it is paid for by the gov.....not sure that is true but we took out insurance from AXA which would have covered a claim for quarantine if required.

latissimusdorsi · 19/07/2021 17:30

thanks for that Pootle
Good to know there's a plan
The travel agent on tv said some people can take weeks to test negative again and she didn't seem to know what they would do with them!

latissimusdorsi · 19/07/2021 17:32

I looooove Majorca

WouldBeGood · 19/07/2021 17:37

I went to Majorca for the first time ever in 2019 and absolutely loved it. Beautiful place.

Ooooh, yes. Very jealous pootle! Glad you had a good time. I went aaaaaages ago (managed to wangle a basically free trip by tagging along with DH who went for a conference there) and it was so lovely. I think it was November, and it was in the high teens all the time in the day, which is perfect weather for me!

I quite fancy being banned from Scotland wouldbegood Grin Would be such a shame to be stuck somewhere warm and sunny.

Mind you, I'm feeling a bit jealous of south of Berwick at the moment, so my standards aren't too high.

Managed to get shouted at by a lady in Costa for infringing the floor markings by looking round for napkins to wipe a drink spill (taken away from The Public as a covid risk, apparently). In which time, DH had given DS my drink (coffee based) rather than his (chocolate based). And half of it had been drunk. So I've had a very excitable 10 year old to deal with this afternoon. Marvellous day...

shouldistop · 19/07/2021 18:10

We've booked Majorca for 2 weeks next summer. Can't wait.

ElephantOfRisk · 19/07/2021 18:21

Don't want to detract too much, but can anyone of you Majorca peeps recommend any particular part? We like quiet places with a few nice restaurants and bars, a small beach is fine but a must is an area where you can jump/dive into the sea? Menorca tends to have rocky bits at the sides of the beach which is ideal for all the menfolk. I just like to sit in the shade with a book and either use the pool or stroll into the sea. Happy to back to Menorca when we can but some nice options in Majorca would widen the repertoire. Don't get me wrong, we have travelled to many other places but tend to default to Menorca as we know we'll enjoy it.

WouldBeGood · 19/07/2021 18:24

We stayed in the most gorgeous renovated townhouse in Pollensa. It was in the Old Town, and had a tiny pool in an internal courtyard, outdoor kitchen. And good wifi so DS was happy. A drive to the beach, but a lovely place to wander round the town and eat out/go to the supermarket

OP posts:
WouldBeGood · 19/07/2021 18:24

That was for @ElephantOfRisk

ElephantOfRisk · 19/07/2021 18:27

Sounds lovely thanks @WouldBeGood. Ideally we'd like to be nearer the beach. Since DH drives for a living, he does not want to drive on holiday. I don't either so that's fair do's. Don't mind hopping on a bus though. Wanders about the town and eating at a pavement cafe etc is ideal :)

WouldBeGood · 19/07/2021 18:29

I’m not a beach fan so didn’t much care 😃 sure you’ll get good places recommended by the Majorca vets !

Cala d'or might suit you Elephant as has lots coves with beaches and cliffs
My favourites Puerto pollensa and puerto soller

ElephantOfRisk · 19/07/2021 18:32

It's funny isn't it that some folks are beach folk and others are pool folk? I don't mind swimming in either but prefer a nice quiet beach for relaxing on and DH and DSs much prefer swimming (and jumping into) in the sea. Happy to help with ideas for Menorca if anyone needs?

ElephantOfRisk · 19/07/2021 18:32

Thank you, I'll check those out.
WouldBeGood · 19/07/2021 18:35

I’m scared of sea creatures 😳

OP posts:
ElephantOfRisk · 19/07/2021 18:40

DS2 is scared of fish but the water is so clear you can see the bottom anyway. I've swam of the coast of india in NOT clear sea and in the Pacific off the coast of Mexico just after a small earthquake - it was a bit choppy - I'm a badass except i can't jump into any water

WouldBeGood · 19/07/2021 18:42

Last thing I want is to see the fish! 🤣🤣

titsintiers · 19/07/2021 18:51

I've not forgiven Majorca for pissing it down most of the week we were there about 15 years ago. But I had many happy holidays there as a child.

ElephantOfRisk · 19/07/2021 19:08

Oh what a shame @titsintiers :(

We had similar in Holland one year but we knew not to expect wall to wall sunshine I guess.

Latest actual Railing - have you seen the kafuffle about cross border trains? What do they want the train operators to do? Chuck half the passengers off when they cross the border? Absolute fucking bollocks.

WouldBeGood · 19/07/2021 19:12

It’s ridiculous about the trains.

Swinney been sharing misinformation on mask wearing, and Humza posting bollocks as usual. It’s embarrassing to be Scottish just now.

OP posts:
GoldenOmber · 19/07/2021 19:44

Seems weird to make a fuss about the cross-border trains when all the shorter ScotRail ones aren’t enforcing 1m social distancing anyway (and can’t because there aren’t seat reservations).

riverrunning · 19/07/2021 19:52

The train thing is a lot of old nonsense - yet more meaningless gesture politics.

ResilienceWanker · 19/07/2021 19:55

OMG - I've just seen that about the trains. LNER sent an email on Friday saying they'd reached agreement with Transport Scotland that the English guidance was fine, but now TS are saying it's not. So what's changed?! And it's a bit pointless anyway, as there's generally only the terminus in Scotland, so what are they expected to do between the last station in England and Scotland?

And, yes, as golden says, Scotrail are hardly beacons of social distancing excellence. We went out to East Lothian on Saturday, and on the hottest day of the year, during the school holidays with one train an hour Edinburgh to North Berwick, they decided to use a train with only 3 carriages (both there and returning) when usually it is 6, or at least 4. (oh, and no trains on Sunday, because of strikes). It was absolutely heaving, with people standing in the aisles and sitting in the luggage bits. Who could possibly have predicted that? Hmm

We went to Pollenca this time in the North - loved it. But it holds a special place in my heart Majorca as went many times growing up.
