The SNP also hold the purse strings to the entire Scottish Government budget. Am I being foolish to think that this might be of concern, and to wonder why it is not front page news in the Scottish press?

It’s interesting there’s been nothing from the SNP HQ - they’re usually very quick to express outrage at the Tories when they do something similarly dodgy.

ElephantOfRisk · 02/06/2021 12:00

Has the money just been "resting" in an account? Just like in Father Ted.

Grin great reference
SengaMac · 03/06/2021 08:49

Iain Lawson (in the screenshot) probably knows what he's talking about.
It sounds like it's just responses to individuals who ask, tho, not an actual publicised offer from SNP.

WouldBeGood · 03/06/2021 09:00

I think so @SengaMac. There seems to be a campaign going with disaffected erstwhile supporters to get their money back. Very strange, the whole thing.

Ianrankinfan · 03/06/2021 10:32

Here’s a blog about getting your money back

yoursforscotlandcom.wordpress.com/2021/06/03/so-you-want-your-cash-back

MaMelon · 03/06/2021 11:09

It’s all been very quiet on the news...really strange.

I presume the SNP have proactively contacted all donors to offer a refund as opposed to the donors having to make a request? It’s hard to tell from that blog.

HirplesWithHaggis · 03/06/2021 19:34

Why on Earth would the SNP offer refunds? They still claim to want another indyref, the "ring fenced" funds were for that campaign once there's a date.

Ianrankinfan · 03/06/2021 19:37

It’s now on the BBC news

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-Scotland-Scotland-politics-57345473

Ianrankinfan · 03/06/2021 19:41

@HirplesWithHaggis I don’t understand it either..... refunds ? All very odd.

GrandPrismatic · 03/06/2021 19:46

so the auditors don’t have to qualify the accounts?

WouldBeGood · 03/06/2021 19:46

That’s what is so strange @HirplesWithHaggis.

It’s almost as if they don’t have their ring fenced Indy money.

MaMelon · 03/06/2021 20:07

There’s a whole load of business ideas that they could utilise to raise party funds -

Where’s —Wally— the missing SNP party funds
Hunt the —thimble— missing SNP party funds
North Coast 6000

The possibilities are endless really Grin

MaMelon · 03/06/2021 20:08

GrinGrin Endless possibilities! (complete with Gaelic translation, natch)

WouldBeGood · 03/06/2021 20:29

Oh yes! Got to have the Gaelic 😃

ElephantOfRisk · 03/06/2021 20:36

Hmm, so originally all the talk was of £600k but BBC now saying "almost £500k".

I'm guessing with every article the amount will reduce until eventually when it becomes common knowledge the story will be all about the missing fiver and everyone will wonder what the problem is...

WouldBeGood · 03/06/2021 20:44

That’s not my magpie! My magpie was sitting on more gold!

Update if anyone missed it:

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.scotsman.com/news/politics/police-investigating-snp-over-money-donated-by-euromillions-winners-christine-and-colin-weir-3271299%3famp

“From the party accounts, police can see the money was spent on other party business”

Doesn’t elaborate though, investigation is ongoing.

ElephantOfRisk · 14/06/2021 00:03

Thanks @CrystalDaze. I hadn't seen that but it sort of seems to be mixing up two different things unless they are intrinsingly linked - which is what we suspected.

The weirs "loaned" money twice I believe and this was meant to be used for elections? The £600k was supposed to be ringfenced for indyref and was donations not loans whether part of that was also from the weirs, i don't know.

One of the theories was that they used the donated money to repay one or other of the weirs loans. Which is sort of alluded too as well I think.
