That and the COP26 later in the year. There's really no way that could go ahead with anything but minimal restrictions, and though we're talking 5 months or so in the future, they must have more than half an eye to needing to avoid the embarrassment of having to cancel or scale back massively at the last minute.

Remember, COP26 is not the domain of the SG. (They embarrassingly tried to muscle in on last year saying that their HQ should be next to the SECC). It’s a global conference, enabled by the U.K. as host, Glasgow is the venue. The SG can set out the terms for Glasgow health and policing around the event, but let’s be clear- NS and her PA are not the meeting organisers. Just like the Commonwealth Games, it’s a fantastic chance to portray Glasgow and Scotland as welcoming and positive hosts on a global scale. It’s the SG job to ensure everything is done relatively safe to where we’re at with covid in relation to the U.K. status at that time, as much as they will hate having to accept that.

Bytheloch · 25/05/2021 10:51

Oh @shouldistop that sounds lovely, glad you finally got chance to do that.

Haudyourwheesht · 25/05/2021 10:58

@WouldBeGood

Railing against restrictions on numbers in gyms. I have to set my alarm for 06.59 each day to book classes for the following week, and the app keeps crashing as people are so desperate to get in.

It’s most annoying.

I have to stay up till midnight to book swimming...
riverrunning · 25/05/2021 11:10

Someone could make money creating an app to alert when slots drop in and then link it to phone alarms...

ResilienceWanker · 25/05/2021 11:18

Oh, I was drooling over the David Lloyd facilities when outdoor, but not indoor, pools were allowed to open, and did consider asking about joining. But realistically I wouldn't have gone enough to merit a tenth of the cost! I think I just wanted to imagine that I was the kind of person who would go (and could afford to!). I'm definitely more of the quick swim in the council pool when I can be arsed, followed by a glass of wine in the pub across the road kind of person Blush. But your experience does sound lovely shouldistop.

In midlothian, they have turned at least one council run leisure centre into a vaccine hub... so that's not opening again for a bit. It does all seem a bit two-tiered. But I suppose that's where we are with lots of things yes my dentist, I AM looking at you

Haudyourwheesht · 25/05/2021 11:30

She's got a press conference today at 12.15. What now? I knew I should have got my nails done before Glasgow goes back into level 4.

riverrunning · 25/05/2021 11:32

I emailed the council about swimming lessons - no reply for weeks. Right I'm checking out David Lloyd.

Look at the bloody weather - I'm looking forward to the forecast scorchio weekend though!

Yes, that's true. It must be a difficult tightrope for them to spin, though (she says, mixing her metaphors to death), assuming the rules surrounding it are different to those applying to the rest of the population (quarantine for people entering the country, for example, I assume will be modified if it hasn't been changed by then anyway). Do they go for the "it's a good and worthy thing to be doing, so we're happy to turn a blind eye, and even encourage attendance, even though there are risks involved" approach, or the "the UK is making us do this and we think it's really risky but we have to go along with it" approach?

I really hope it's the former... just because I'm sick to death of the latter, and it would be nice to see some actual positive collaboration on a thing that is a huge honour and potential benefit to both the UK as a whole and Scotland individually.

I'm just hoping everyone can hold their nerve if cases start creeping up again around september/ October like they did last year. I'm assuming the UK (England) gov is less concerned as they seem happy to accept the vaccine leading to fewer serious cases is sufficient reason to tolerate the numbers increasing slightly without resorting to universal restrictions. ScotGov may move to that approach of course, but we're not there yet.

titsintiers · 25/05/2021 11:36

She's saying general overview @Haudyourwheesht so maybe no announcement as such.

IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021 · 25/05/2021 11:38

Surely not level 4 again. They have just approved the euros 🙈

I can book the gym easily but yeah the classes are a bit of a night mare

Yes, I'm fed up with the fecking rain. It's nearly June ffs. I shouldn't have to still be wearing boots. Even in Scotland.
riverrunning · 25/05/2021 11:44

I was idly looking up denim jackets the other day - then I remembered no jacket type thing has seen the light of day this year and it's the end of May!

It's getting to the point that I'm so desperate to catch any rays that I've given up on spf.

When am I going to be able to risk leaving home without a waterproof coat?

rookiemere · 25/05/2021 11:47

It's an absolute deluge of biblical proportions outside and it's my turn to walk the darn doggo at lunchtime.
Having said that I did message my Niece in England and it's also unpleasant there.

Scottishskifun · 25/05/2021 12:02

We are back from England and I'm wearing the biggest fluffiest jumper I own!
We got lucky with the weather where there were showers and some not so warm days but when the sun was out it was lovely!

Here's hoping the lecture isn't too strong we live in a typically low part of the country but still want to have weekend trips away!

shouldistop · 25/05/2021 12:08

@riverrunning which council did you email? Glasgow life have a huge list of current customers to get through for swimming lessons, the guy said he didn't have a clue when they'd be able to get to the waiting list. East Dunbartonshire said they weren't taking anyone new on for lessons for the foreseeable future.

riverrunning · 25/05/2021 12:21

This is Edinburgh leisure shouldistop but doubtless that's the same situation, they must be rammed.

WouldBeGood · 25/05/2021 12:41

Having railed this morning, yoga was great

Same for Active Stirling (Stirling Council). The online booking for lessons- only way to book- was a shambles. Now all full And waitlisted. Even booking a leisure swim session is akin to playing the lottery if you get a place. Extremely limited numbers in pool and no access to showers afterwards. Sigh.
riverrunning · 25/05/2021 13:28

I've been looking at alternatives in earnest - both kids are way behind on learning to swim and it's clear the situation at council run places isn't going to get better anytime soon!

Plus it'll be something to do every time it rains this summer!

mondaywine · 25/05/2021 15:25

@riverrunning which area of Edinburgh? I high recommend Stepping Stones lessons. We did those and its a great company. There in a lot of places now.

mondaywine · 25/05/2021 15:25

*they’re

WouldBeGood · 25/05/2021 16:38

I’m really glad about a more positive message today from NS. But also feel on edge in case this is the up, and a down will swiftly follow..

NotSoLongGoodbye · 25/05/2021 16:40

@riverrunning
We are in the same situation re swimming. It's deeply frustrating as a lot of the private providers use school pools and they haven't opened up at all.

shouldistop · 25/05/2021 16:48

@WouldBeGood I missed the update, what did she say?

WouldBeGood · 25/05/2021 16:50

I just saw what was said on the tiers thread @shouldistop. But it’s sounding more hopeful
