The End is CerTEIRnly in Sight ...

That is a question @StarryEyeSurprise but I think what @Scottishskifun is getting at is there are many routes for infection to get into uk and we can't tell how this got to glasgow
Could easily be lorry drivers from France/Poland/Spain bringing in food who have been in contact with people returning from India.
Lorry drivers is permitted travel. People should not have been travelling in/out of Scotland for any other reason up until couple weeks ago. And if they were they were breaking the law!

StarryEyeSurprise · 15/05/2021 15:10

Hauliers coming into the UK are tested on arrival and then every 3 days. They must also quarantine on their cabs.

There were no restrictions on travel into England from lots of countries ( including India) until very recently. The graph I put up doesn't relate to lorry drivers. It relates to travellers.

We obviously have a common travel area. And even when it was illegal, there was still a lot of inter country travel.

People in England are questioning the lack of control on travellers into the country ( yet again) yet on mumsnet .. nope!

latissimusdorsi · 15/05/2021 15:19

I agree @StarryEyeSurprise we should have much tighter controls on people travelling into uk.
I was responding to idea we could have as few people coming in as Aus and NZ when we have so much road freight coming daily (as we're dependent for food)

We're also at the mercy of people that ignore the laws and travel to/from India at the peak of a pandemic!

latissimusdorsi · 15/05/2021 15:24

@Mistressinthetulips

I'm at 6 weeks too *@latissimusdorsi* and in Lothian. Is this to reduce transmission or does it improve effectiveness? Just wondering what the benefit is in switching from 12 to 8.

I don't know the reason they are suddenly recommending getting over 50s fully vaccinated sooner. no-ones really explained!

Hauliers need to do tests yes but they don't need to quarantine in their cabs! Most lorries don't have toilets in them and they also deliver their loads and stop for fuel, food etc etc etc.

A test only tells you if it's present at that point not if exposure and virus developing.

I agree travel should have been stopped but last year that ship has sailed a long time ago!
It's incorrect to say it was a free for all travel in England it was only for specific reasons for a considerable time now. Your only also only allowed to travel for essential reasons not jollys! There is also loads of paperwork which has to be completed and presented to border control of reasons of travel, proof of reason etc etc etc.
Friends travel regularly for essential work it has not been easy to do so. The perception that it's business as usual couldn't be further from the truth and if you knew people who were travelling then you would also know this.

The first dose gives reasonable protection (around 60-70%) but second dose +2weeks gives very high protection from hospitalisation and death (over 94%)

The over 50s are in the JCVI vulnerable category, if they get more second doses then they will be fully protected quicker and less likely to end up in hospital. It also helps break transmission as fully vaccinated people have been shown for a certain percentage not to pass the virus on either.

RedcurrantPuff · 15/05/2021 15:46

I was 11 weeks between my 2 doses. My husband got the email today for his second, it’ll be 9 weeks.

Mistressinthetulips · 15/05/2021 16:02

Thanks both, that makes sense

Has anyone seen the scenes at ibrox today? Glasgow is never getting out of level 3 AngrySad

Pootle40 · 15/05/2021 16:09

@forfucksakenett

Worrying.
There could be 300 million 'cases'....I don't see reference to death / hospitalisations or severe illness so I genuinely look at this and think 'and, so what?'
WouldBeGood · 15/05/2021 16:14

I’m with you @Pootle40

It seems very weird

dancemom · 15/05/2021 16:30

I'm 8 weeks on Monday since my first dose but when I called up to check I was told my second appointment hasn't been scheduled yet

RaspberryCoulis · 15/05/2021 16:49

Indeed. "Cases" mean diddly squat. We don't count the cases of flu, chicken pox, slapped cheek, whatever else.

It's hospitalisations which count. But that doesn't fit the "zero covid" messaging which is why we get the daily case count.

forfucksakenett · 15/05/2021 16:55

We actually do count cases of all of the above (if of course they are reported to the doctors or whatever). None of those illnesses currently cause the same level of potential hospitalisation as Covid.

I get that people are frustrated but if the scientists and experts are urging caution (not panic but caution) because of variants and what not then shouldn't we maybe listen?

RaspberryCoulis · 15/05/2021 16:59

But that's the point, most cases are never reported to the doctors. I have three kids - they've all had chicken pox at one point, DD almost certainly had slapped cheek, the others may have had it but in a minor fashion.

But because both are easy to spot and diagnose you don't ever see the doctor. It won't say on my 12 year old's medical record that he has had chicken pox because we never sought medical advice.

Focusing on cases is not healthy and not useful.

RaspberryCoulis · 15/05/2021 17:01

Also, @forfucksakenett, we've had approaching 15 months of "stay at home", "protect the NHS", "just because you can doesn't mean you should", "don't kill granny".

Many people - me included - have stopped listening. Not interested any more, the vaccination programme is doing its job, the NHS is not stressed to the point of collapse, the numbers of admissions are way, way down. Just not doing it any more.

forfucksakenett · 15/05/2021 17:09

Well maybe you have @RaspberryCoulis but lots haven't.

Who knows how bad this would have been without these restrictions. I think India gives us a bit of a clue tbh.

You do you, of course, but I think that peoples concerns are valid.

There will also be many cases of covid that go unreported because symptoms are so mild and people think they have a cold or because people don't trust doctors or, like you say don't need to seek medical assistance.

It won’t just be Glasgow. Many people travelling to Glasgow from various parts of the country to stand in the street outside the stadium for some inane reason 🤷‍♀️ And will then spread it to areas outside Glasgow, so we will all be back in level 3 before you know it.
Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 15/05/2021 17:40

I feel really sorry for Glasgow who are still locked up, especially as there isn't (to my knowledge) any evidence that these 'cases' are translating into pressure on the NHS in any meaningful way. I'm not sure I can get that worked up about the outdoor mass gatherings either, whether that's the people crowding round police vans or football fans celebrating (interesting that one was positively celebrated and the other condemned...). There is always talk of a new wave after something like this and it never seems to happen. If they can get on top of the surge vaccination in the affected areas in theory we should see transmission drop off as all indications are that the vaccines work pretty well.

Pootle40 · 15/05/2021 18:11

The UK is nothing like India. I'm sorry but it just isn't.
forfucksakenett · 15/05/2021 18:22

@Pootle40 keep telling yourself that. The Government were very clear as to how close we came to being overwhelmed. Had that happened we'd have been very like India.

If you say so.

charliebrown59 · 15/05/2021 18:56

i do understand the current worries and feel really sorry for everyone struggling but in India they've put a net across the Ganges to catch covid victims and having hospitals in some places turning down critical people that can't pay upfront (per linked in friends).

Let's all try and hold on to our sanity here.
