@Blurberoo

Argh no campaigning, no manifestos, very few debates, this doesn’t seem like a proper democratic process! I get that protocol demands a period of mourning, but it doesn’t feel like voters are going to be fully informed before making their choices.
That's my gut feeling too.

I wholly disagree that campaigning should be suspended because of a Royal death. Absolutely ludicrous and about as undemocratic as you could get.

Blurberoo · 09/04/2021 17:06

Agree, I know it’s protocol but it’s ridiculous

WouldBeGood · 09/04/2021 17:21

It’s actually making me very cross. Might have to pop over to railing thread 😂

ScotlandUnited · 09/04/2021 17:36

its only for a week though isn't it? so campaigning will resume.

TBH those who will vote SNP will do so regardless of what else is promised/announced by them or any other party because most are only interested in indyref.

WouldBeGood · 09/04/2021 17:39

That's true @ScotlandUnited.

As a republican who’s not for Indy it’s all getting on my nerves.

sweethomepa · 09/04/2021 18:07

I read an article recently that stated that Scotland's resource funding through the Barnett formula had (slightly) increased per head, but during the same period the SG spend per head of population had decreased. I can not remember where I read this, can anyone help?

ResilienceWanker · 09/04/2021 18:09

Is it even that long? The BBC is reporting the tories are suspending campaigning til Monday, and the SNP possibly only today. The whole suspension of everything non-HRH based is annoying, much though I'm sorry for his family, but I imagine the parties think they won't get coverage as well as it being protocol so they are cutting their losses. Also, the feral potato's comment has really irritated me, much as I'm no royalist. It just seems so snide.

Roll on manifestos. I'm impressed by Anas' approach to date too. Thank God someone's focusing on actual policies. I really hope it cuts through on people who "couldn't bring themselves to vote labour" for whatever historical reasons. OK, prob not the obvious choice for indy-minded folk, but their social, health and environmental policies do sound good. Hopefully the manifestos will go into how they'll pay for it!

This is excellent for looking at Scottish funding.

Itwasjustresting · 09/04/2021 19:25

Oh, that’s better news. A brief suspension today and maybe the weekend, but people deserve the opportunity to hear debates and read election coverage.

riverrunning · 09/04/2021 19:26

Period of mourning - I was on a work call today when it hit the news and someone said 'yay, does this mean we get a day off'?

I'll take the respite from political nonsense though!

titsintiers · 09/04/2021 20:21

I find that chat absolutely repugnant @riverrunning, but I could be over sensitive atm.

riverrunning · 09/04/2021 20:39

I wasn't impressed, think I muttered 'charming'

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/04/2021 22:15

I don't mind a break today or even over the weekend as I think realistically they'd struggle to get coverage anyway.

By Monday I would expect the wall to wall discussion of Prince Philip to have reduced a bit whereas today I'm not sure there were any other news stories being covered!

WouldBeGood · 09/04/2021 22:48

I wasn’t expecting the blanket coverage, I must say @StatisticallyChallenged. Nuts.

It has been a bit bonkers - some of it interesting though. I knew his history generally but not much of his childhood/adolescence.
WouldBeGood · 10/04/2021 07:18

I was thinking. Quite judicious of Joanna Cherry to be taking a break. This could all be very tricky for her. I wonder where she’ll come down in the end?

Good history lesson though and makes a break from COVID and government dramas . Challenging childhood but just got on with it , perhaps some lessons here. Enjoyed listening to all the interviews with young people whose DOE award changed their life paths .

But I digress . Article in Times today with claims by a group of lawyers re Scottish prosecutors abusing their powers and behaving as government censors during Salmond enquiry. They also comment how crown office sought to prevent the Spectator from continuing to publish material already in public domain. They are calling for Crown office policing role to be brought under some sort of oversight.

WouldBeGood · 10/04/2021 11:54

I’m just wholly uninterested in anything royal. And he was a pretty unpleasant individual.

Interesting about the lawyers! I’ll have a look.

StatisticallyChallenged · 10/04/2021 11:56

I agree @annabelindajane, I found some of it really interesting. Actually to me he sort of highlights the issue with the current "cancel culture"; he wasn't perfect, he made mistakes, he said rude obnoxious things. But he also did a lot of good. People are complex.

Times article sounds interesting, do you have link? MIght be able to find it on archive

WouldBeGood · 10/04/2021 12:08

Scottish Legal News on the lawyers’ opinion.

@SempreSuiGeneris

Hi all. I think there is a fair bit of hyperbole surrounding the HCB. Note that even the Tories are not proposing full repeal.

Aamar Anwar was interesting on Debate Night the other week and pointed to plenty of examples where the Law already steps into hearth and home. Some examples he gave were planning terrorism, domestic violence and breach of the peace. The clip is on-line but I'm not having much success tracking down a succinct article from him - I am sure at least one is out there somewhere.

Also worth bearing in mind the England already has more codified legislation in this area.

On the other related topic England is also considering GRA very similar to the Scottish proposals.

Hello (I don't know if people remember but I was on the earlier threads) but this is not right. England and Wales are not going to follow the Scottish legislation and is diverging strongly from anything like the HCB. I'm sure that there are lots of TRA working this up but in Westminster its like trying to revive a dead concept, particularly when the equalities minister is Liz Truss and she seems to have decided that TWAW and associated claims of "hate crime" is about as important as ironing a duvet cover to women. The reminder of the "hate crime" agenda has been given to the Law Commission, which as those in the know will see, is a very good way of just deferring the issue for a long time.

GRA reform is dead in England and Wales, and the Scottish legislation is a really good way of showing why you should not legislate; its a really bad example of law making.

SempreSuiGeneris · 10/04/2021 14:19

Suggest you take off the all things English rose tinted specs Lex.
This is one of any number of recent examples from English police forces stretching their remit.

Hi,

In Derbyshire, we will recognise gender hate as: “A crime or any non-crime incident, which is perceived by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice based on a person’s gender or perceived gender.”

Each incident is assessed individually."

Also somewhat naive to deem fortress Truss impregnable.

TheShadowyFeminist · 10/04/2021 14:25

Did anyone watch the Alba Women's Conference?

It was very tightly managed, was quite slick (apart from some tech glitches toward the end). I was quite impressed by all the speakers, but I still don't know what their actual policy is.

OP posts:
SempreSuiGeneris · 10/04/2021 14:32

Was just going to ask what their policy was? Starting to suspect this may be just a bit of smokescreen to entice women back to the cause.
