I mean I know we are supposed to think all politicians lie, but really- Sheridan was convicted of perjury. Perjury is a really serious crime. The whole legal system is predicated on society buying into the idea that you do not lie under oath.

Yet some are considering the possibility that Sheridan, who demonstrably does not respect that fundamental principle, should be considered a suitable candidate to be in the ranks of the law-makers in Scotland.

Happinessisawarmcervix · 27/03/2021 14:18

Who was the Tory with the “simple sword of truth” - Aitken? He also went away for perjury. I do wonder how they think they will get away with it.

Chris Huhne and Vicky Price I’d put in a different category, I don’t think a lot of people realise that swopping speeding points is actually perjury.

GreenlandTheMovie · 27/03/2021 14:19

Who is Murray and what has he been charged with?

I've lost track.

OhBuggerandArse · 27/03/2021 14:19

I don’t think they will take Sheridan, the optics of Salmond are bad enough and they won’t want to be needing to defend Sheridan’s record too.

TheShadowyFeminist · 27/03/2021 14:22

Craig Murray joined Alba but hasn't (yet?) been asked to stand.

"Like Martin I have joined Alba, but have not been asked to be a candidate for them."

Tommy Sheridan has this on how Twitter account but nothing saying he's joined Alba or is standing for them either.

"... After discussion tonight we have decided to withdraw from the election in May and support and promote Alba..."

Aye, I think there's enough to cope with, without adding this to the mix.

Jonathan Aiken has made no attempt to get back into Parliament. There's no comparison with Sheridan.

This seems quite distasteful.

Cant verify it so no idea if it's true.
If it is true, fucking hell. The SNP have got way further depths to sink to even now.

Craig Murray- former UK diplomat who used to be an ok person but is now a very loose and unpleasant cannon. Convicted of contempt of court over disclosures made during the Salmond trial.

Craig Murray is a former UK ambassador, Salmond fan, pro Indy and pro Assange blogger who blogged on the trial. He was tried for contempt of court for enabling the identification of several of the complainants through multiple articles on his blog despite being asked to take them down.

There are questions about why he was prosecuted and not others (i.e. whether the decision to prosecute was political) but having read the archive of his blog and the judgement on his case he appears to me to be very much guilty.

@GreenlandTheMovie

Craig Murray, former Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Julian Assange supporter and pro-Indy blogger.

He’s one of the very few places that you could read Alex Salmond’s defence, from which we learned that he denied outright about half of the allegations and provided witnesses for some of them who testified in his defence; that the “sleepy cuddle” was consensual; and that Woman H, who had the most lurid allegations, was not in Bute House on the evening that she claimed the attack happened.

That’s quite important against a media narrative that has tried to push “just because he was found not guilty didn’t mean it didn’t happen” - it’s far more complex than that.

Some people think Murray has been singled out for prosecution because he was pro-Salmond and it’s certainly true that a number of other journalists have also written stories which could be seen as making it easier to identify some of the complainers.

Others think he rather brought it on himself with one post which really did sail very close to the wind on giving massive clues.

Happinessisawarmcervix · 27/03/2021 14:30

*that Salmond claimed the “sleepy cuddle” was consensual, that should read, for clarity.

I can't make head nor tail of that tweet as to who said what and who blocked whom but all concerned seem deeply unpleasant.

Pardon me for wondering out loud about prominent men and perjury. I’ll leave you to your obsession with Sheridan.

My "obsession" as you call it is horror that anyone could think bringing Sheridan back into Scottish politics could be a good idea.
TheShadowyFeminist · 27/03/2021 14:43

Perhaps the Alba party launch has done us all a favour as it's induce Tommy to step down & is no longer seeking election.

Silver linings and all that!

I hope so but I could well see him being picked up by Alba.
TheShadowyFeminist · 27/03/2021 17:22

Just seen a claim that there's Labour MSPs about to jump ship to Alba. Didn't think of Indy Labour folk but I'm guessing that makes sense if there's issues that they also have with Labour. Especially if the new leader isn't what they voted for.

There's a woman who was removed from the Labour list because she didn't object to a 2nd Indy ref, and her branch weren't happy.

OllyBJolly · 27/03/2021 17:38

I think all the "Significant Women" that Salmond is talking about will walk if Sheridan gets anywhere near a candidature...

StatisticallyChallenged · 27/03/2021 17:43

I think that's quite possible OllyBJolly. Sounds crazy given the issues Salmond himself has but a) if you were thinking about jumping then you've already reconciled yourself to Salmond's issues b) there's a lot of murk and uncertainty around those issues and c) Salmond is a much bigger, more important fish than Sheridan

Graffitiqueen · 27/03/2021 17:44

I was finding this all quite exciting and interesting but starting to feel a bit anxious. Would it be too much to ask for a bit of stability and someone to run the country in a boringly competent manner!!

OllyBJolly · 27/03/2021 18:01

I think those of us who have been around politics for many years know that there has been a lot of "inappropriate behaviour" from males across all parties so are looking at this through that lens. Inexcusable, but no worse. (And as with other apologies, I'm cynical that these men actually accept that their behaviour is truly "inappropriate"). However Sheridan took misogyny to a new level that won't be overlooked or forgiven.
