Guilt free railing

The place to vent, moan, rail, cheer: whatever you’re feeling about Covid, and the rules, and life and the universe.

I’ve started this as I’m feeling scared and fed up with increasing restrictions despite vaccines. I feel that what should be a more positive time is instead bringing more and more doom.

I want the simple pleasures of life back, as well as all the big stuff.

Wow 18 months sounds like a seriously long case. But I guess you don't go every day. Still what happens if you can't just take leave or you're a single parent.

it was a very long case involving a gas explosion where people died so it was essentially determining whether there was liability - a lot of complicated technical information I think.
WaxOnFeckOff · 14/02/2021 20:16

@Callisto1

How are people selected to be on jury duty? From electoral register? I wonder if you have to be British or just resident. I remember reading about someone who spent several months on duty and that they were not allowed to read news online. It sounds very strange
Electoral register and if you aren't born in UK, there is a period (5 years?) where you aren't allowed to sit, there is a big list of exempt jobs also.
WaxOnFeckOff · 14/02/2021 20:19

Ah it wasn't as long as that, but I bet it felt like it - think it was 6-9 months.

NearWildHeaven · 14/02/2021 20:20

@WaxOnFeckOff I think I know the one you're talking about. The explosion was about 20 years ago? If it's the same one that would be pretty traumatic

Callisto1 · 14/02/2021 20:20

If I remember correctly it was 10% for mild and moderate @StatisticallyChallenged, but they hope better for serious disease. I think they don't have the data yet, but I am not following it super closely because I got a bit fed up with reading up on the virus in the little bit of free time I still have.

I guess it will be interesting to see what happens in Israel since they vaccinated a lot of people and are reopening. Though I think they used more Pfizer than AZ.

yes, i think that will be the one. nephew was only in his mid twenties at the time of the trial.

Callisto1 · 14/02/2021 20:23

Thanks for the info Wax. Maybe I shouldn't have put myself on the register Grin

NearWildHeaven · 14/02/2021 20:31

@WaxOnFeckOff that one was in the town I'm from originally so a lot of local focus.

I have never been called up but my brother was, at a similar age to your nephew, for something child sex abuse related. He's never really talked about it but it was fairly horrific I think.

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/02/2021 20:36

This is the document @Callisto1

www.scotcourts.gov.uk/docs/default-source/coming-to-court/jurors/1-guide-to-jury-service-eligibility.pdf?sfvrsn=2

and yes @NearWildHeaven, i think it was a difficult trial both for the tragedy (i think they had to see photos of the poor deceased) and then it was a lot of in-depth technical detail to sit through.

My sister was very affected by the case she was on as she was obviously still grieving for my mum at the time and then had to deal with a family sexual and other abuse case, she was really upset by it.

NotAnActualSheep · 14/02/2021 21:15

Oh no, that all sounds very traumatic for your nephew and your sister wax. Is there any support for jurors afterwards? I imagine many could be quite badly affected by what they have to watch/ see and do. DH was on a jury a couple of years ago - it was a case involving children, but was a "with intent to" charge, so could have been a lot worse. He found it a worthwhile experience doing it, but was not impressed at all with how the case had been brought, and did get quite upset that he thought their verdict would have been different if the prosecution had dealt with some evidence in a different way.

Mind you, we've just watched a Belgian courtroom drama on channel 4 ("the twelve"- its really good if you can cope with subtitles or your Flemish is up to scratch) and that is a seriously weird legal system going on there! So can't complain about ours I suppose.

On an electoral register note, I was looking up the franchise for the May elections, and it looks as if non EU foreigners are allowed a vote too. If this is right, my dad will be super excited... He's a US citizen (never got round to getting UK citizenship, though he's been here for 45 years, working, paying tax etc) and hasn't lived in Scotland for a holyrood election before. So he may be able to vote for the first time in the UK! just have to wean him off the slight crush he has on NS, then I might tell him

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/02/2021 21:19

Yes, only tell him if he is going to vote "correctly" Grin

We watch a lot of subtitles but I think i might need the opticians before we tackle another series as my eyes are no longer used to looking into the distance!

WouldBeGood · 15/02/2021 08:53

Schools announcement tomorrow it seems. Fingers crossed, especially with England saying all theirs likely back 8th March.

And no police checks on the border with England to enforce quarantine.

DS fed up of online school. I need to try to think of something to cheer him up. But he gets scared when I mention a Fun Activity 😂

Fingers crossed for kids starting to return. Did anyone see the updated info Swinney tweeted on the 13th? Recommended 2m distancing in secondary schools. If they stick with that then it would have to be very limited blended learning wouldn't it - certainly thinking of many high schools that would be less than half a class at a time

StopTouchingYourFairyGarden · 15/02/2021 09:04

I will devastated if early years doesn't go back next week! Guess we need to wait and see.

I keep threatening my DC that if they don't stop fighting I'll make them go for a walk. It works every single time Grin

rookiemere · 15/02/2021 09:06

It is a bit like Stockholm syndrome as I'd be so pathetically grateful for DS14 to have any schooling at all, that even the 2 days per week that I poo pooed last time seems like a luxury. I'm sure Swinney mentioned that social distancing would no longer be required once everyone is vaccinated- or maybe not Confused.

That's the issue I have with SG - they come up with these grand pronouncements as if its forever and they probably want it to be there for as long as possible without acknowledging that forcing DCs to social distance - which presumably means no outdoor team sports- is not long term desirable for many reasons.

DeepfriedPizza · 15/02/2021 09:06

I don't really know who to vote for come the May elections. NS doesn't fill me with great hope but she doesn't have great opposition either.

DD (10) for the first time yesterday said she was bored of it all. I really feel for her, she has not complained this whole time. She also keeps asking to go to The Range. We actually needed something from there a couple of weeks ago so I took her with me but keeps asking to go back and has a list of stuff she wants to buy. As a family we don't need anything so not an essential trip out.

Callisto1 · 15/02/2021 09:36

I think we'll do a PJ day and mess about at home before the home schooling resumes tomorrow. I've been avoiding any speculation about school as it just makes me anxious and changes nothing. Besides toddler was up before 5 so all I want is a duvet!

WouldBeGood · 15/02/2021 09:59

@Callisto I feel your pain though my bad sleep was caused by my dogs waking me up and weird lockdown dreams

frasersmummy · 15/02/2021 10:22

Is nicola sturgeon going to give us any idea of what she hopes our road map out of lockdown will look like tomorrow?

Or is it just a yes or a no on early years and wait another 3 weeks.. I am really struggling to motivate my teen now with absolutely no word on when schools will go back and if he has any kind of assessments to aim for

titsbumfannythelot · 15/02/2021 10:27

I would like to know the answer to this too @frasersmummy, I would like my husband to be able to go back to work soon too.

WouldBeGood · 15/02/2021 10:34

I think a plan for the route out would be good to hear. A bit of hope.

I raised this on the tiers thread, and people seemed to think that it was only intended to be in place for the few weeks when 5-8% of the pupils will be in, doing practical stuff for exams. I can see that working (assuming several classrooms are used for each group if an entire class are in) but it just won't work in the longer term, for the reasons blended learning was canned. (1 day a week in edinburgh, with an extra bonus day every 3 weeks). I hope that's right, and they aren't intending on reintroducing blended learning in the long term.
Groovee · 15/02/2021 11:06

I honestly have no idea what tomorrow will bring.

I'm enjoying the peace of Dd at work, Ds online college and I've sent Dh back to bed as he's all out of sorts!
