Nice Hotels

We have a big anniversary this year and looks like our European break won't happen. I'm looking for nice hotels no more than 90 minutes.

I'd like somewhere with a nice restaurant or in a city with nice restaurants.

Wondering if there are any hidden gems out there before I book one of the more well known places.

Where are you roughly Titsbum? We had ours last year ended up in the East Neuk of Fife instead of the south of France. Was still lovely but I am now thinking Pearl which is 30 years for a special trip.

There's the obvious Gleneagles and Stobo. Though I think my DH would hate Stobo and feel like he'd gatecrashed a girls' weekend. If you went for Gleneagles you could eat at Jon and Fernanda's in Auchterarder instead of the hotel.

I was really surprised at Mal Maison in Leith , it was nicer than other Mals I stayed in and in a great location for Tom Kitchen and some other great restaurants.

I should have said no more than 90 minutes from Glasgow. Silly me.

Will have a look at Malmaison.

Inver? They have bothies you can stay in now and it is pretty special to wake up in after a lovely meal and have the delicious breakfast. It’s not the typical naice hotel stay, but very special.

rookiemere · 27/01/2021 07:57

I stayed here www.easthaugh.co.uk/ last year. Lovely private hotel with excellent food. Not much in the way of grounds, but can visit Pitlochry near by, some nice walks and the posh chocolate shop not far away.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/01/2021 08:00

When is your anniversary? We have our 25th in late March but don't think it's worth planning anything Sad

We stayed in the glasshouse in Edinburgh for a special birthday and it was nice but we ate out other than breakfast.

You might not want another city type place though?

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/01/2021 08:03

Ahhgg, just read properly and see that are interested in city type places. Should read the OP better instead of skipping to the responses.

emmathedilemma · 27/01/2021 08:05

Plenty of options in Edinburgh depending on your budget and preference for old or modern......the balmoral, the calendonian, prestonfield, kimpton Charlotte square, tiger lily, the George, the glasshouse, the witchery, 21212.......

What about Monachyle Mhor, beautiful setting and great food.

Some lovely places suggested here-thanks.

It's in May Wax, so hopefully a hotel stay will be allowed by then.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/01/2021 09:36

Hopefully it'll all be good by May. You never know, I might get away at end March also but I'd feel really guilty at leaving DS1 out. He literally goes nowhere whereas DS2 has his girlfriend and lives away. I'm too much of a sap despite what folk on the "other" thread might think... Wink

Atholl palace in Pitlochry. Lovely restaurant, 4 poster bedroom

titsbumfannythelot · 27/01/2021 10:01

I knew that Wax Smile. I hope you can get something sorted too. We all need a change of scenery.

What about the Old Course Hotel at St Andrews? It might be a bit beyond 90minutes from Glasgow?
Some of these might suit, i've never even heard of some of the Edinburgh ones but forgot about Fingal in my earlier post. www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/united-kingdom/scotland/articles/the-best-boutique-hotels-in-scotland/

ladylunchalot · 27/01/2021 13:11

What about the New Lanark Mill Hotel? I haven't actually been inside but have been told it's lovely. Surrounding area I know v well and it's lovely.

Rhumba · 27/01/2021 15:20

I've stayed at the old course in St Andrews a couple of time and love it. I've heard good things about Fonab but never been? othrwsie Edinburgh with the above suggestions from Emmathedilema

titsbumfannythelot · 27/01/2021 15:48

I've just been looking at that one Rhuma. Is food in the hotel nice?

titsbumfannythelot · 27/01/2021 15:48

Sorry- Rhumba!

House of Gods in Edinburgh
The Fife Arms
The Torridon (possibly too far away)
Prestonfield

poppet31 · 27/01/2021 15:54

I would second the old course. Gorgeous hotel and the spa is fab. We also really liked turnberry.

Chemenger · 27/01/2021 16:53

The Fife Arms in Braemar or Prestonfield in Edinburgh would be my top two choices.

Groovee · 27/01/2021 17:25

Norton House which is nearer Edinburgh Airport is lovely. Have had a few spa days and over nights even though we live 5 minutes away. The location makes it feel so secluded.

Littleelffriend · 27/01/2021 17:45

@2typesofjungle have you stayed at the house of gods? I was looking at it for a special birthday but it had mixed reviews

ScottishStottie · 27/01/2021 17:48

The food at fonab is really good, really beautiful and luxurious feeling to the whole place.

FelicityPike · 27/01/2021 17:52

I hate to say it but....Turnberry?

Yutes · 27/01/2021 17:52

I was coming to say House of Gods in Edinburgh.
Hotel Du vin in glasgow or Edinburgh would also be my suggestion
