Hope the interview goes well @Iwillneverbesatisfied.

And thanks everyone for all the very helpful and informative posts and just generally being a place where I can have a read and feel a bit less mad 😀

Not a teacher, dyslexic family - I'd say the transfer into paper is an extra challenge of fine motor skills and that may be why it's harder. Fwiw reckon you're right to teach the extended vocabulary.

Lockdownbear · 19/01/2021 09:00

I think everyone with dyslexia is different. I can write words on paper and know if they look right, juggle letters around until it does look right but cannot spell words words out loud. Even for DS if he ask me to spell stuff it's easier for me to scribble it down than to tell him out loud.

My mum is amazing at spelling, but can't get her head round the idea that a word can look right or wrong.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 19/01/2021 09:14

We just had an email from Fife Council asking for permission for our kids to join live learning online.

Only ten months in, Fife Council 👍 but also makes me think we are in this for another long haul...

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 19/01/2021 09:18

In my experience schools know no more than anyone else. There is a crazy scramble every time there is an announcement that certainly indicates that they don't. Mind you every dept meeting we've had since august has been all about being ready for online learning. But I think that's more about not being caught on the top this time.

titsbumfannythelot · 19/01/2021 09:23

Good luck with the interview @Iwillneverbesatisfied 🍀

anon444877 · 19/01/2021 09:29

I'm hoping for good news re job for you iwill doubt there will be any other good news today!

Dd has gone a bit off routine, she keeps asking me when coronavirus will be over and not sleeping, bouncing around. I wish we knew!

I tend to agree, I can certainly confirm childcare providers aren't told anything at all ahead of time
RaspberryCoulis · 19/01/2021 09:54

School has really upped their game this time. We're just into week 2 of home learning and I've just had a call from them checking in, making sure we are all managing, asking about tech and broadband access.

That's more in a week than we had in March - June last year. (We're all fine and I told them that, but that I appreciated them checking in).

Iwillneverbesatisfied · 19/01/2021 10:09

DD is definitely getting more engagement from the school. proper lessons albeit online. So she seems a bit more enthusiastic this time and less bored although its only week 2...

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 19/01/2021 10:27

My kids are definitely more enthusiastic and engaged this time round, and I'm not really sure why! The offering from school is the same, no actual live learning or anything on video, but I think we've all just learned a bit from the first lockdown, about how best to get through it.

Lockdownbear · 19/01/2021 10:59

I don't think schools have much more insight than the rest of us. But you don't need to be a genius to figure out schools aren't going back while the NHS is at bursting point. Scotland NHS might be doing OK but with the spready version of the virus it wouldn't take much to overwhelm it too.

The big clue we were in this for the long haul was 3 in-service days at the start of the term. SG didn't do that for just a week online.

They have definitely upped the game in Lanarkshire. I think some red tape might have been removed and teachers are getting to know their way around the software a lot better.

RaspberryCoulis · 19/01/2021 11:01

I think the main difference this time is that teachers are in school, not working from home and with the kids in "hubs".

user1487194234 · 19/01/2021 11:12

It seems clear Scotland is behind England in the vaccination programme. I can see why they want to prioritise care homes after making such an arse of it first time round
What gets me is that if we were doing better than England ,it would be the first thing NS would mention every day in her party political broadcast, but she doesn't say every day,we are doing worse than England here .

As for what she will do today, surely we reached rock bottom last week, what more can she do,wall us up and feed us from the air

Downton57 · 19/01/2021 11:53

A lot of teachers are working from home @RaspberryCoulis, and from what they're saying on their groups they are working very, very hard to try and keep up with it all. The workload involved (which appears to be every evening and much of the weekend) in planning and implementing online learning as well as doing rota teaching in hubs doesn't seem sustainable for long, particularly for those teachers with young children.

titsbumfannythelot · 19/01/2021 12:01

I really feel for teachers, they can't win. Every time they come up with a contingency plan the govt change things again.

goodname · 19/01/2021 12:02

We don’t seem to have hubs here (Fife) our school which is very small was closed last time and is open this time but I think teachers are taking it in turns to go in.
@IncludeWomenInTheSequel our school sent out an email about Online learning last week and we have our first online literacy class right now and he has maths on Thursday. Only for one child though, the one who is struggling more.

I’m listening in and it is hilarious! One kid keeps interrupting to talk about his dog, his brother etc. Other kids have loads of weird noises. Lots of people keep disappearing. This is a group of 8 kids and it’s chaos 😂😂. Teachers doing a great job though. I should be helping child number one but he just wants to move around today, not in a learning mood. Apparently, according to ds, this is pretty much what schools like but they are getting more done!

Yes they seem to all be in their own schools this time instead of hubs, which I think is better for them. And probably for infection control!

OMG live learning sounds much as I expected it would be Grin

anon444877 · 19/01/2021 12:18

One of my dc spends the entire time trying to show off various toys and treasures and the others mostly do the same. Her teacher is amazing though and incredibly patient.

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/01/2021 12:29

going by what my friends with school age DC, it sounds like the teachers are doing really well and kids are enjoying lessons. Friend I chat to most has an S1 and a lot of the lessons are "live", they do a bit of an intro for 15/20 mins, get a task, go off and do that and can message in questions and then they get together at the end to discuss and either submit their work or self mark which teacher.

They seem to have built up bonds even better with kids discovering the Mr X has a baby as they heard it crying or they get to see Mrs Ys toddler, and were laughing at Miss Zs dog arriving in to have zoomies round the room. Hat's off to the lot of them I say.

@Lockdownbear I would probably strike the balance of the easy test so that it helps build confidence but then use some of the harder words yourself with him. (Not a teacher but also dyslexic).
My mum would always get me to break down harder words into parts to be able to spell them. But even now I can get stuck on trying to write basic words if I have a block point but can still remember how to spell Tyrannosaurus rex.... Grin

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 19/01/2021 12:49

That actually sounds quite lovely @WaxOnFeckOff

I was just talking to my kids about how crazy it feels to see your teacher being a normal human in Tesco or something, so I imagine it is pretty nice for the kids to see them in their home environment.

rookiemere · 19/01/2021 12:55

I thought DS14 was working really hard. DH had disabled the wifi to the xbox and gaming pc during school hours and we'd not heard a word of complaint. Turns out he was playing offline games in his downtime, still I'm mumsnetting when I'm meant to be working so I guess it runs in the family. This time I'm fairly sure the teachers will be quickly in touch if something doesn't get handled in.

ladylunchalot · 19/01/2021 13:03

@Iwillneverbesatisfied good luck with the interview today

RaspberryCoulis · 19/01/2021 13:10

On the vaccine roll out - I have heard from two different people who don't know each other about the issues with the NHS roll out.

Staff (in Glasgow at least) are being emailed a link to book a slot at the Nightingale at the SECC. The emails were being sent on a priority basis - frontline staff first. But the link wasn't personalised, so anyone with a valid NHS email address was able to click and book an appointment. So nurses/doctors were forwarding the email to people working on admin, or management, or the canteen or any other roles which were done the list. My friend who is a nurse stood for hours in queues last week because they were swamped.
