@littlbrowndog this us really absolutely ridiculous.

The only good thing about it is that they must be conceding the marks are pointless

littlbrowndog · 24/01/2021 23:02

It’s illogical.

So the masks we have been wearing don’t work 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

WouldBeGood · 24/01/2021 23:07

Exactly! 😂😂

WaxOnFeckOff · 24/01/2021 23:08

That's always been the case I understood. It feels like they should but there is no evidence that they do and plenty that that overall they don't for this type of situation. Obviously different for continued close contact in situations such as surgery but folk wandering round a supermarket in dirty masks, being touched, adjusted and when passing someone for a few seconds at a time, not so much.

The facemask have never worked they protect others from large particle droplets being spread they have never stopped the small particle sizes or have protected the wearer.

I doubt they will do it given its only covid wards that have FFP2/FFP3 masks. The medical masks that care home workers and non covid areas are FFP1....... It will get very expensive for them very quickly it's about 5 times the price for a FFP2 mask.

Plus the new variant is very much in circulation where in Germany it's not as much. The new variant is more transmissible via small particles hence ventilation is a big factor.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 24/01/2021 23:34

@littlbrowndog

So swinney now saying we might have to wear special face masks

I mean ffs we all been wearing face masks since September.

What’s the reasoning and facts for this

And will they be sending them out to us or sending us money to buy them

Ffs it’s endless.

When did he say that? He was asked about it today but said they were looking at the research on various other measures including a certain type of mask, but that they were not ready to decide anything yet. It's something some French towns and cities are doing, that's why the journalist brought it up.
Lockdownbear · 24/01/2021 23:47

Scottishskifun very good point about the additional costs to the NHS.

Cynical me thought it would be another way to make people stay home, force us to were expensive disposable masks. But then those who are ecomonically sensitive (skint) will end up reusing them multiple times before theý are binned.
Lots of people have now built up a collection of reusable masks that get chucked in the wash, daily.
Increase the demand and they'll force the price up too.

Bonkers. Its just like they can't leave anything alone, constant need to tinker and faff. Just get on with the day job and get us out this mess.

Below

John Swinney has confirmed that a requirement for the public to use medical grade face masks is being "actively explored" by the Scottish Government to help limit the spread of coronavirus.

The Deputy First Minister was speaking on the BBC Politics Scotland show this morning in the wake of concern on the European continent about the new covid variant and following the news that people are now required to wear the higher grade surgical face masks in shops in Germany.

When questioned about this, he said: "These are issues that are being looked at and of course some public authorities have already started to apply such measures within Scotland so we've got to make sure that we take the most effective measures to suppress the virus, to be advised about the clinical value of particular steps to take.

Covid deaths in Scotland rise by one as 1,195 new cases recorded overnight
"That's always been the basis of the decisions that we have arrived at as a government. And the question that you raised about the higher grade face covering is one that is being actively explored within government today".

WouldBeGood · 24/01/2021 23:55

My masks live in my car, pocket or bag (when I needed one) never washed. There’re probably more dangerous than Covid

Scottishskifun · 24/01/2021 23:55

@Lockdownbear most people would be skint if they were buying FFP2 masks for daily activities they are about £5 each!!!!

You can technically reuse them more than once but only a few times and you either need to stick them in the oven at 70 degrees for 30 minutes or they have to be quarantined for a week so definitely not ideal and reusing without the measures puts people more at risk. They are also a face fit mask they are tight around your face don't work with beards and are pretty uncomfortable (think of a dust mask type thing.)
Can't be reused by NHS staff.

WouldBeGood · 24/01/2021 23:56

They sound like they’ll ruin my makeup

Lockdownbear · 25/01/2021 01:55

A fiver a pop, in the days of folk needing food banks. What planet is he on?

I heck of a lot of folk would buy 1 and just keep using the daft thing. Even if technically they should only be sold in packets. Theres always some entrepreneur who'd happily buy a box and split them, (single fag n match).
They'd be worse than the cloth ones.

Not to mention the risk of supply running out for the people who actually need them.

Even those who do have money would be loathed to effectively spend a fiver a day on their stoat to the shop to buy a paper. Remember the papers are essential. Yes I'm sure there are people who do stoat to the shop everyday just to relieve the boredom of being in the house and that 2min chat and friendly face at the checkout is an absolute lifeline.

Scottishskifun · 25/01/2021 02:24

I am assuming that they are examining the FFP2 BTW but this is what they have stated is required in Germany difference being the German govt sent them out to people!

I kinda understand why they are looking at it from one aspect - ventilation and small droplets is a big problem especially with the new variant (it's being pretty down played at the moment other than a tag line of open your windows.... ) but you see face willy's as I call them (nose not covered) everywhere. A tight fitting mask only works if worn correctly and yes at the cost people would wear it many more times than is safe so defeats the point! Better to get people to use masks correctly first and then see if still finding high rates.

DH does covid response so he has research papers on ventilation risks.

shouldistop · 25/01/2021 03:22

Are they going to be handing them out?
It wasn't so long ago we were discouraged from buying medical/surgical masks and told any face covering would do, I bought a visor so my glasses wouldn't steam up, was told that was no good so I bought 5 cotton masks and now they're no good either?

runningpink · 25/01/2021 06:08

I won’t be wearing any other type of mask.

I can only just about manage the disposable ones and I only go places thatt require them if I really really need to go.
If it’s a 1 minute in and out then I use my scarf at the moment.

I feel they are doing more harm than good, how many people actually wear them properly, wash or bin after use etc (Me included)

And you have to isolate if your in close contact with a positive anyway so doesn’t prevent that situation. Really feel they should be a choice but know that won’t happen.

My fear is we will still be force into mask wearing into 2022. 😢

Iwillneverbesatisfied · 25/01/2021 07:15

I was going to post this.

I wear hearing aids and masks get tangled up and make them fall out. I also have difficulty with my speech which is worse with a mask. I have visual problems, balance problems, anxiety and many other health conditions.

I try not to go anywhere as a result (hence my previous worries about WFH) but when I do, I wear cloth masks. It took me ages to find the 'right' kind of mask that felt both comfortable and didn't make my hearing aids fall out.

Its bad enough that disabled people are getting refused entry for not wearing a mask, and if we now have to wear 'special' types of masks, this is just going to disadvantage disabled people even more.

I fucking hate hate hate the SNP

shouldistop · 25/01/2021 07:19

They're really going to lose the goodwill of the public soon. They should remember it's only our goodwill that makes their 'power' possible.
The Scots are generally a compliant lot but a lot of people are pushed to their limits.

Iwillneverbesatisfied · 25/01/2021 07:20

I think this shite about type of mask you wear, plus the new independence push, is a very convenient deflection from the fact that a, vaccinations are behind England and b, NS is fighting for her political life.

trolltrollingsheep · 25/01/2021 07:31

Just a random question seeing some people are revolted with possible new masks having to be worn: for how long will you continue to comply?

Lockdownbear · 25/01/2021 07:43

NS is fighting for her political life.
I sincerely hope she loses it. They are becoming unbearable. I'm fingers crossed that Mr Salmond pulls her down. It really will open eyes that they are only in it for themselves.

rookiemere · 25/01/2021 07:52

I'm anti independence, and the thing I find most sickening is the fact that SNP is using Covid-19 for political gains. This is a bloody pandemic not an election tool. I get so angry that it looks like we'll be losing roughly 18 months of proper living rather than existing, and then on the back of that forced into another expensive and divisive referendum.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 25/01/2021 08:01

Right so he didn't actually say anything about making it a requirement at all then.

Lockdownbear · 25/01/2021 08:02

I really don't care who win the election a collision labour/tory government would do me anything that avoids a referendum.

Scotland is desperately going to need investment not more uncertainty.

Lockdownbear · 25/01/2021 08:05

@IncludeWomenInTheSequel

Right so he didn't actually say anything about making it a requirement at all then.
He said they were considering it or looking at it. Generally making noises to suss out public opinion. Going a set further than Boris following the Germans. No mention of who's paying or cost.
