It’s another few months of isolation for my boy.

randomsabreuse · 19/01/2021 16:46

I guess I'm odd but I'd rather do maths at home and messy stuff at school. Helps that I can do maths but really can't do art! There's also a lot of maths app options for teaching concepts (Maths Factor with Carol Vorderman is good although more linked to the English curriculum)

From the pictures in the class video today there's definitely differentiated work happening as I didn't recognise all the tasks

WouldBeGood · 19/01/2021 16:47

Not as in Covid, just not anyone to see except me and my ex. It’s not right, this

LetItGoGo · 19/01/2021 16:48

No it's awful.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 19/01/2021 16:48

God yes, messy play is for other places.

WouldBeGood · 19/01/2021 16:48

I’ve seen the Photomath app recommended- apparently it shows working and explains maths problems you show it

PostPopper · 19/01/2021 16:49

Spent the last couple of hours trying to console DD16 who is supposed to be doing Highers. Feels like a complete lottery as to what grades they will get (not blaming the teachers)

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 19/01/2021 16:49

I looked at it today but deleted it again when I realised that to do almost anything you need to pay

WouldBeGood · 19/01/2021 16:49

Oh.. that’s no good!

WouldBeGood · 19/01/2021 16:49

I’ll get back to YouTube 😂

dancemom · 19/01/2021 16:53

Shitshow indeed

Dd is doing Nat 5, I'm not so worried about teacher assessed grades as she got good predictions at her last report. I'm more worried about her going into the higher course without the necessary knowledge. They have missed months of school, it's so worrying.

Surely by mid February under lockdown numbers will have reduced enough to get them back to school even if it's just exam year pupils?

I agree about getting exam years back ASAP but everyone seems to think nursery and primary are the priorities. Which I get, in terms of childcare etc. But doing highers this year on the back of not finishing the Nat 5 course last year, I reckon this years S5’s have definitely come out of this worst!

What happens to keyworkers children in blended learning ?

Rae36 · 19/01/2021 17:12

Do you think Nicolas Sturgeon has ever actually spent a day in a house with kids and a parent trying to work full time? She's welcome to come and try to do hee day's work at my kitchen table any time then maybe I'd not want to stab her every time I hear her fake sympathy. (Obviously I have no intention of doing anything remotely violent)

When she says 'I know how hard it is' I want to yell no you don't. You have no fucking idea. Not a clue.

She gives me the absolute rage.

This is not sustainable for families at all.

Iwillneverbesatisfied · 19/01/2021 17:15

DD in S2. They normally have their options choices in February. I wonder how they are going to do options choices discussions and form completion - any teachers on here know what their schools are doing?

Considering teaching has been different this year, that'll definitely influence subject choices.

DollyMixtureLulus · 19/01/2021 17:16

What happens to keyworkers children in blended learning?

The original plan had centralised hubs for KW children staffed by sports coaches etc.

Blue Monday is lasting longer than a day for me I think. I am enjoying having more contact with my class this time and engagement has been good, but I feel (my school, anyway) are really operating at the edge of our limits. We have no space for any more KW/vulnerable children and if any staff have to isolate we're in bother. We can't do any more than we're doing.

goodname · 19/01/2021 17:18

I have primary aged kids and I think exam years should be a priority. Can just about manage to teach them what they need to know in p4 and p6 but wouldn’t be so good at exam prep 😬

WouldBeGood · 19/01/2021 17:32

@Rae36 I think she should be made to experience a week and weekend of doing her job from home with a couple of young children and a teenager

makingitupaswegoon · 19/01/2021 17:39

@Rae36
I agree totally

anon444877 · 19/01/2021 17:46

I agree exam years should be absolute priority too - no chance of recovering that education. I am thankful that mine are small enough that they have time to recover from the debacle that is us attempting to parent and work.

Sexnotgender · 19/01/2021 17:50

Exam years and nursery age really need to be priority.

StatisticallyChallenged · 19/01/2021 18:02

I'd agree with exams, then nursery. I actually think the very bottom end of primary matters - I'd rather have my abke to read, write, basically fully functioning p6 at home than a p1 who is missing out on the foundations of learning. And not all parents have the time or patience (or understanding) of things like phonics which could be a huge disadvantage if they miss these basics. I know other countries start school later but unless we significantly revise the curriculum in early primary to reflect what's missing some kids will struggle

WouldBeGood · 19/01/2021 18:03

They all need to be back in. All ages, all years.

Lockdownbear · 19/01/2021 18:05

While it makes sense to get the exam years back in from an educational point.
Older teens are more likely to spread and carry the virus than primary kids. So it a bit of a no go.

I'd also think exam aged kids are more likely to be able to work independently at home, assuming they have facilities. Where primary kids need support to access the online learning.

GrrrrrrArghhhhh · 19/01/2021 18:13

This!

I'm a TA in a small independent and currently manning our key worker service (kids doing online learning but based in school)... I don't know how parents are doing that at home whilst working... and it's a poor substitute for the kids, even those that were in, even though I reckon our school is doing a really good job...
