I’m counting the years til DS leaves school, so please no repeat years!

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/01/2021 15:01

friend had a message from her DDs school to say they will have a full day of teams classes in various formats for the full school day. She's a bit shocked as much more than she was expecting.

Re the clap, DH is front line NHS and thought it cringeworthy. Some folks obviously working as hard and beyond that a human could work, others through no fault of their own (closed wards etc) exceptionally quiet and a lot inbetween and as he said, everyone has a job, pay, good terms and conditions and security unlike half of the folk out clapping.

Lockdownbear · 06/01/2021 15:02

Wax that is a good point that SG needs to put stuff in place for kids.

blowinahoolie · 06/01/2021 15:06

I didn't clap, find all that kind of stuff patronising. Also the NHS do a terrific job under normal circumstances but no one bothers to clap then. Each to their own.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 06/01/2021 15:08

@Lockdownbear I personally do not want construction closed, my DH is an agricultural engineer working with farm sheds, he works on his own so no need for him not to be working really. I would much rather he was at work than have him sitting at home and us both worrying about whether he would have a job to go back to considering he is the high earner

iquitelikenormalityafterall · 06/01/2021 15:10

I don’t think the clap is back, is it? I think the problem with “the clap” is it was more about showing face and stating to your neighbours that you are socially compliant than supporting the nhs. I won’t be clapping, mainly because I don’t think restrictions have worked so far and can’t see how they will this time, also I don’t agree with school closures, think this is more public outcry and hysteria than based on scientific evidence. But I will follow the “rules” because what choice have we got?

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 06/01/2021 15:11

@iquitelikenormalityafterall I hated the clapping last time, I just found it cringey and show offy, it didn’t make me feel appreciated 🤷‍♀️

I'd happily support some extra funds to colleges and apprentice schemes to pick up any learning gaps and help get the non Uni DC into a better employment position and pay extra tax to do so. Speaking of which, what happened to that promise of places for all kids in something?

I have a friend who's DC didn't get what he hoped for, didn't get a college place, hasn't been able to get a job as he was under 18 and supermarkets wouldn't even take him, was meant to see a careers adviser at some point but it was cancelled, twice and he still has nothing, been applying to everything he possibly can but with few qualifications and no experience he isn't getting anywhere.

Rae36 · 06/01/2021 15:16

I have absolutely no idea what best to do about school leavers and exams. It's so hard. There will be a big market for tutors and summer schools for those who are driven enough and supported enough, and whose families can afford it. I have no idea what the rest will do. It feels really hopeless.

anon444877 · 06/01/2021 15:28

well exactly re tutors etc - so many kids are scraping by and suffering I'd love to see this being picked up in the Scottish parliament for further action.

I bet that poor DC feels great about themselves wax.

With teachers doing their absolute best as they are, remote learning just isn't as good as face to face.

The situation for struggling kids to young adults was already bad before covid. Cancelling exams is the short term off the top of your head answer to this. At least a govt'l level recognition that more is needed would be something.

Oooh ranty today too - right, must go and do something else.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/01/2021 15:35

Yes I know, he's a lovely lad too but had a few health issues so missed some school, got a D for something he thought he might get a C for and missed out on everything. Lovely , honest boy feeling like he's on the scrap heap at 17. Hopefully he finally manages to get moving on with something soon, he'll be 18 shortly so that will help but he's not even managed to get himself driving due to all this so he thought he'd have another skill to offer. single parent family so not rolling in it either.

RaspberryCoulis · 06/01/2021 15:44

Lots of non-essential shopping again today! Forced the kids out for a walk this morning in the bright sunshine, turns out the bribe of a Gregg's bacon roll works wonders.

Popped into the M&S food store and such riches.. their posh "Gastropub" range lasagne reduced from £8 to £1.70, a lovely looking nutcracker cheesecake down from £6.50 to 97p and one of those boxed Thai meal deals half price. Dinner sorted. (And I also got two more desserts which are in the freezer. By the time it gets to the end of Jan I may well need a whole chocolate cheesecake to myself).

Lockdownbear · 06/01/2021 15:57

That's rotten, really rotten that young people are stuck in limbo land.

Its also one of the downsides of WFH, very difficult to train young people while all the experienced staff are all WFH.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/01/2021 16:05

His mum has always said he's not academic but I used to say that he was such a lovely, sociable boy that he would do well anyway as his people skills were fab/brains aren't everything yadda yadda and I really meant it. He's lost a lot of confidence and doesn't see friends and keeps out of bother but isn't growing into a proper adult really as he's still at home with his mum or alone when she's at work. He does a bit of housework, games a bit with friends or just sleeps, put on weight as not getting out etc etc. he just needs someone to give him a chance and I bet he is mirrored all over the country. You can't lay the blame at anyone in particular, just that everything has failed him really.

He cat sat for us when we were away for a few days as at least it gave him a wee bit of cash, but it's not like we are going away regularly for him to benefit.

Lockdownbear · 06/01/2021 16:10

Def exams aren't everything. I hope he gets a start somewhere soon. Much easier to get a job if you're in a job.

Mattress questions, what's the difference between an adult mattress and kids mattress?

StatisticallyChallenged · 06/01/2021 16:24

I'd expect kids mattress will be weaker springs - not designed to cope with adult weight

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/01/2021 16:25

Agree totally, I have my fingers crossed

re mattresses, I think the level of support/strength of the springs/foam would be the difference. Designed for a lighter weight I guess.

Usually the mattresses you get with things like kids bunk beds are shite (you can feel the springs with your hand) and i wouldn't put child on one if I could help it (finances permitting) as they are growing so surely you want them properly supported when sleeping, and they are in them longer per night than an average adult.

Groovee · 06/01/2021 16:28

@dementedma

In line with Groovee's posts, my father died mid December but we couldnt organise the funeral until this week. We live in a large village and pretty much everyone uses the village undertaker who lives locally. While discussing plans and the gap between death and funeral, my sister wondered where exactly our father's remains were. Teen DS piped up casually " Grandad's in a fridge in Mrs Dow's house." The image that conjured had us all helpless. ( She is actually a proper undertaker with a full morgue etc, just in case anyone is worried!)
Sorry but I'm howling at that. He's in the fridge 😂🤣😂🤣
anon444877 · 06/01/2021 16:33

Plus show me a kid that doesn't jump on their mattress and fully test the springs...

DollyMixtureLulus · 06/01/2021 16:33

I have the sense of humour of a 12 year old and the weekly clap never failed to make me laugh Blush Grin

DollyMixtureLulus · 06/01/2021 16:36

There is also the concern that the group of BEds and postgrad teachers due to start work in August won't have completed their teaching practice.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/01/2021 16:36

Aww I missed that post @dementedma sad and funny at the same time. Like one of DHs uncles whose funeral we attended many many years ago - the song chosen for exiting the service was Raw Hide - "rollin' rollin' rollin, git those dawgees rollin'" I was poorless and DH glaring at me so i'm trying to pretend i'm crying but at that point i'd only met said uncle twice so was a bit of an over-reaction...

Hope your DDads funeral goes as well as it can.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/01/2021 16:37

one that's on a bunk bed? Wink
WaxOnFeckOff · 06/01/2021 16:38

In my pursuit of replacement mattress, I read that a foam mattress isn't as good for rumpy pumpy as there isn't the same "give" - not sure if that's true or not but isn't the reason I don't want foam....

ssd · 06/01/2021 16:47

Oh god that's the least of my considerations if buying a mattress Grin

Topmost is can I enjoy a good life in reading my book Smile
