If the schools stay shut till even March how will the kids get any kind of exam grades..

They can't possibly judge grades on the that amt of school closures.. Can they?

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 05/01/2021 23:10

Honest to God, that's what I've been thinking. How can the final course grade be based on what they've done up until December? If they've done it at home it can't really be used as evidence. We've done some assessments but I know the majority of my Higher pupils have a lot of scope to improve.

RaspberryCoulis · 05/01/2021 23:12

Here's something to cheer you all up...

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-scotland-55553493

Trump coming to Ayrshire to play golf and avoid the inauguration of Biden. St Nicola says "don't come".

Checking in. Did everyone get that letter from Jason Leitch and co today? Could have bought a few more vaccines with however much it cost to post them all out, just sayin’...

Bikingbear · 05/01/2021 23:31

I've no idea how you grade the Highers based on a terms work and catching up from previous year.
The only think I can think is kids are in school learning in April, May and doing assessments / prelim of sorts in June.

Nobody is having fun in this storm, we are all if different boats with different issues, but all in the same storm.

WTF, scrap a few baby boxes and pay the postage!
littlbrowndog · 05/01/2021 23:38

I never got a letter from Jason 😞😥😥

I think we should be at least giving senior school pupils the option of resitting a whole year next year if they wish (assuming it looks by then like the 2022 exams will be normal). I appreciate this isn't problem free and creates challenges for unis but some kids will have been trying to study in rotten home situations, not enough devices, no support, maybe having to care for siblings. They deserve a chance to get their exams properly.
Bikingbear · 05/01/2021 23:57

Stat, I know it causes lots of problems for kids to resist the year. Capacity in school, 19yos still in school.

I actually think kids are as well to spend the year in college, with them moving onto Uni from there, rather than repeating the year in school. But there again, I heard about a kid who left school last year who was set to do a practical college course. They cancelled half the places because of social distancing.

Something needs to be done at further/ higher education to make extra places for kids. Maybe add an extra semester to courses to cover stuff they might have missed. College / Uni is probably a more suitable environment for these young adults, if that makes sense.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 05/01/2021 23:59

Anyone else near the Tay?

There's a helicopter going back and forward over the river really low, shining beams down onto the water. Same last week.

Before this year I didn't know anyone who had died by suicide; in the last year I now know, or know of, six people.

The effects of the pandemic are absolutely catastrophic for so many Sad

Lockdownbear · 06/01/2021 00:30

Im nowhere near Dundee but I can hear a helicopter.Sad
I've known a couple of attempted suicides before but thankfully don't know any who've done it.

Its getting to me the number of people going missing being searched for on FB. I really do think SG boobed in summer trying to go a step further and as a result more people are hitting the end of their rope now as they didn't get a decent break from restrictions in summer when cases were really low.

BlueThursday · 06/01/2021 07:28

I had a little greet last night I have to admit.

Working at home and requiring decent concentration, making phone calls while DD is left to her own devices.

She had a cry too last night saying she was lonely. It just breaks my heart

Agree with this totally. I think the SG just kept pushing an elimination strategy that wasn’t going to work and as a result it feels like we’ve been in some kind of lockdown forever. People keep saying there’s been no rise in suicides but I don’t know, it seems to be happening a lot more round here Sad

Heard a helicopter out here last night and I'm in SL. Could be for a number of reasons, of course, but the mental health situation is worrying.
titsbumfannythelot · 06/01/2021 07:47

Hugs for you and your daughter blue.

Whilst it's a pain my husband can't work it is good that it means I can get my head down when I need to.

Hopefully today will be better Thanks

titsbumfannythelot · 06/01/2021 07:49

I agree agent, I know at least 3 people through friends or work who have committed suicide.

For some people work is their life emotionally as well as financially and that is being taken from them.

Sometimes you just need to let it all out. Hope you and your DD are feeling ok this morning Thanks
Lockdownbear · 06/01/2021 07:58

Blue Thursday how old is your DD?
The thing that have helped my 9yo in the last lockdown was xbox, it was amazing to hear him talk and chat to pals.
My friend gave her DD an old phone with a PAYG sim which gave her access to What's App and the ability to do video calling.

Playing out in has also been a god send I really feel for kids who aren't able to / who don't live near other kids.

Agent cooper It will come out eventually how many people have committed suicide in 2020. Probably like the drugs deaths they'll keep the figures hidden as long as possible. And it would not surprise me if Scotland's rates are much better than England's.

anon444877 · 06/01/2021 08:09

repeating years has to be on the table as an option for kids with significant skill lags.

It's obvious - many kids have missed additional time for self isolating periods in March and December too.

If they end up not back til April time (and I hope that's pessimistic), many can't sustain that amount of lost education.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/01/2021 08:19

I think we talked about this before, but I think part of the issue is that the people making the decisions have a bit more normality than most.

They are still working out the house, meeting people, travelling etc. I'm not saying they have an easy job, but they aren't stuck in their house feeling lonely, or trying to occupy young children whilst trying to work or not, worrying about the state of their teenagers health, or worrying about their job, or where their next meal is coming from, or trying to homeschool with multiple dc and not enough space or equipment and maybe with an abusive person in the home, or waiting for some health procedures etc. Maybe some of them have some of these issues and obviously they will have stresses, but I don't think any real appreciation of what people are going through in order for their decisions to have balance.

Jodri · 06/01/2021 08:28

Indonesia are starting their vaccination with the young rather than the most vulnerable. It will be interesting how this works out as most countries are doing the same as us and vaccinating the elderly. I think this may be better.

Lockdownbear · 06/01/2021 08:35

There is certainly an argument that vaccination should start with those in public facing rolls.
But then again if it's the older people who are filling up the hospitals.

I'm just worried about delays in the rollout to younger people. And comments about a worldwide shortage of vials. Surely it wouldn't be that hard to reuse them, irn bru, or milk bottles style?

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 06/01/2021 08:37

I have also stopped following a few people on Facebook this last week. Sick to death of the shouting about staying at home etc, one of them is an admin assistant for the NHS but apparently she has seen all the sick people in the hospital so how dare people try and live some form of life.

I work in the NHS too, actual patient facing but I’m not going to be sanctimonious about people being, well people 🤷‍♀️

anon444877 · 06/01/2021 08:39

I've used my snooze button too - the problem as always is the wrong people are getting scared.

ProvisionallyAnxious · 06/01/2021 08:40

@Bikingbear the vials thing really frustrates me too. How is it that not one person involved in planning the logistics of these things thought, during the development phase of the vaccines, "hmm, maybe we need to get factories to up production of vials for this unprecedented vaccination programme"?

As I keep saying to DH, at this point govts etc really have ONE job that matters above all and that's getting the sodding vaccine out. And they are cocking it up!!
