For dc it would be inch more like a normal day to see their teachers teaching each lesson. It happens for university, gym classes, etc so why not schools?

WouldBeGood · 07/01/2021 20:03

Much more.

Invisimamma · 07/01/2021 20:05

What about the kids that can't sign in? I use the laptop for work, ds has an old tablet he can use but it's not great, but then we don't have another device for ds2.

Plus there's no way our broadband would support 3 of us on calls at the same time, we don't have the bandwidth in this area.

ikswobel · 07/01/2021 20:06

@WouldBeGood it's hard to explain, but teaching a lesson and just giving the information would probably take about 10 minutes. In a class the rest of the hour would be spent supporting individuals, explaining points, keeping kids on task and tbh a lot of pencil sharpening, toilet visits, drinks etc.
Online learning is much more effective if there is something to watch or read away from the class and then check in time with the teacher, then more tasks away from the laptop, then support and assessment.
It's very frustrating for parents as the learning part of school is a lot less time consuming than the social aspect...

WouldBeGood · 07/01/2021 20:08

Yes, but these are not ideal circumstances. Online even for half a lesson, you could still answer questions, engage, chat, ??

WouldBeGood · 07/01/2021 20:09

Because of it’s just a central hub of generic worksheets then there’s no need for teachers?

ikswobel · 07/01/2021 20:09

@WouldBeGood also for anyone who has been in an interminable work video call and found that tedious and stressful how much harder will that be for dc ( and teachers) !!!

WaxOnFeckOff · 07/01/2021 20:09

One DC at uni has had no live lessons or tutorial groups and the other (different uni) has had one live tutorial group a week. Not all unis are teaching live either. One Dc is half way through 3rd year and has never sat an exam.

Cismyfatarse · 07/01/2021 20:10

@kurtrussellsbeard I too am angry. Normally the SQA pay me to mark Higher. This year there will be no study leave, no extra money, and we are expected to gather "robust" evidence from pupils who can send each other answers.

My colleague in Maths has no idea how to proceed. At least in English some bits are hard to copy.

@WaxOnFeckOff that's a bit outrageous.. no online teaching at all ???

WouldBeGood · 07/01/2021 20:10

But I it will be less boring than a worksheet. And they’ll be with their peers, albeit virtually.

It seems to be being done in England

WouldBeGood · 07/01/2021 20:11

What’s the point of this “online learning?”

Peppafrig · 07/01/2021 20:11

Not a single soul out clapping tonight I think it died a death

ikswobel · 07/01/2021 20:13

@WouldBeGood absolutely not a lot of worksheets. Planning effective online learning is a whole new skill set,it's not classroom teaching at all. It's extremely difficult and teachers are doing an amazing job if they are stepping up to it even in the smallest way. I have seen the most amazing virtual classrooms and ideas 💡

WouldBeGood · 07/01/2021 20:17

@ikswobel what does a virtual classroom entail?

kurtrussellsbeard · 07/01/2021 20:19

@Cismyfatarse I'm a marker too 👋🏻 we may well have crossed paths over a delightful buffet at the Marriott (no sarcasm there either - highlight of my day)

There will be no robust evidence unless we can get back into school pronto. 🤷🏻‍♀️

kurtrussellsbeard · 07/01/2021 20:27

And even then unless we get back quickly I'm really not sure how fair it is to proceed as planned. Some kids have missed 4-6 weeks of school as a result of forced isolations never mind lockdown 2.0. It's just not fair.

Cismyfatarse · 07/01/2021 20:36

@kurtrussellsbeard Love a Marriott buffet. And the free pens. I used to bribe pupils with the free pens from Hampden, Celtic Park and the Rangers ground back in the day too.

You just can’t win, one family wants live teaching, another family can’t do that because there are three kids and one laptop.

Nope, nothing. There was a weekly voluntary session to go to if they had any questions to ask. DS didn't and is very shy so didn't bother. He had some group work with other students which they did via messenger or dial in but lecturers weren't involved in that. He averages around 90+% for all assignments and previous class tests so not really worried that he's needing support but he could do with being around people and being challenged.

Lockdownbear · 07/01/2021 21:00

You still need teachers to be able to explain where kids (and parents) don't understand. A bit like a lecturer delivering a lecture to 100s and being able to ensure clarity in a tutorial of 30 kids.

These are amazing

ikswobel · 07/01/2021 21:15

@WaxOnFeckOff that's so isolating, didn't think that any unis would be that bad Shock

That's an integrated masters in Computer Science at Strathclyde. He's had a distinction for his first 2 years so as I say, it's not that he needs support that he isn't getting, it's just that it's not really the academic learning that he needs. He gets video lectures etc to watch so not like he isn't getting anything but he spends 22 hours a day in his bedroom so some more interaction would be good. I tried to encourage him to go along to the hour available so he could even hear what other folk were asking as I think that can give you info you didn't know you needed, but he declined - he's 20, I can't force him to dial in!

ikswobel · 07/01/2021 21:30

@WaxOnFeckOff feeling your pain, DS here and kicking his heels after graduation last year
