We need a new mattress, DH is waking with a sore back every day. He is very fit and does a physical job (NHS) but it's interfering with his gym (in the garage) routine and it's not great for his work either.

However, we don't have access to anywhere to try some out so now trying to make an expensive purchase without being able to try it.

StatisticallyChallenged · 03/01/2021 20:56

@anon444877

There isn't a lot of home based peace to be had with bored kids at home and adults wondering if they'll ever be able to get any work done in peace before Easter...

This potential extension to the school return isn't doing my January health reboot any good.

Very true, and part of the reason we moved. I couldn't face the prospect of a second lockdown with no quiet space at all
Bikingbear · 03/01/2021 20:58

I remember some comment during the first lockdown about fear and stress.

Many of us tried to learn something new but actually the fear and stress of lockdown put people into survival mode. You can't expand and grow learn new stuff while fearing your future.

Incidentally I've just seen a FB share, a lady who missed 4 years of school because of the Bosnian war. She landed in Australia age 13 with no English, and missed 4 years of school. She still managed to graduate from HS and get a degree.

ssd · 03/01/2021 20:58

Excellent post @NotAnActualSheep

ssd · 03/01/2021 21:00

Wax, I think emma mattresses have like a 90 day money back guarantee?

WouldBeGood · 03/01/2021 21:02

@RaraRachael I think that’s the hardest thing. I generally cope by setting up Nice Things to do. All gone.

I went absolutely fucking mental last time so am going to try to stay slightly more sane this time.

ssd · 03/01/2021 21:02

Just checked you can send the emma matress backfor free.

I've heard they are very good.

Groovee · 03/01/2021 21:02

I've ordered balloons from a wee company and ordered a cake from an amazing cake maker. Still no plans for DD's 21st in 3 weeks though. I'm hoping for news tomorrow that means I can order something like an afternoon tea or actually book a lunch.

I'm a planner, I don't know uncertainty or going with the flow. Not knowing where I stand with work or anything is a stress.

PapsofJura · 03/01/2021 21:03

The just hope that the children are allowed to continue to play outside with their friends as if that goes then they will really have nothing to do in these dark winter months.

WaxOnFeckOff · 03/01/2021 21:05

Yep @NotAnActualSheep.

I don't have young kids at home, but I'm struggling to do any of the things that I know would help me be more positive. I don't want to go outside anymore, i just can't be bothered, i'm fed up cooking and eating, shopping for food is a chore i now do on-line. I work all day on a computer and everything else i do (moan on here mainly) is also on-line. I have a bit of a phone phobia and that extends to face time type stuff so generally will chat using text or messenger.

I have nothing booked to look forward to but feel guilty as we have jobs/enough money etc etc when so many don't. I'm fed up to the back teeth of everything.

WaxOnFeckOff · 03/01/2021 21:09

Thanks re mattress recommendations Smile, there are a few that give you a money back guarantee but most seem to be memory foam topped and neither of us want that. there is also the issue that I don't really want to keep our old mattress hanging about while we test as it's not easy to get rid of it without getting it collected when the new one is delivered. I know it's not a huge issue in the grand scheme of things, but in normal times, we'd go to mattress shop, try a few out and get one delivered and get the old one picked up.

rookiemere · 03/01/2021 21:13

@WaxOnFeckOff if you've ever stayed in a Premier Inn, then you'll know what their mattresses are like. I reckon we'll be getting one of these for our next purchase www.premierinn.com/gb/en/why/sleep/buy-our-bed.html .

RJnomore1 · 03/01/2021 21:14

@WaxOnFeckOff I feel exactly like you, and then guilty for feeling like it.

Spin classes were doing me the world of good and I was even going doing online ones at the gym until we went into tier 4 the first time. Now I have no motivation to do anything and struggle to see any positives ahead but at the same time I know we are far from badly affected compared to most people.

WouldBeGood · 03/01/2021 21:14

Oh, @rookiemere I’d love a premier inn mattress

WaxOnFeckOff · 03/01/2021 21:14

That's funny Rookie - i said that to DH as I would be happy with one of those but he feels it's okay for a night or two but doesn't think it's firm enough long term. We like a firm bed.

WaxOnFeckOff · 03/01/2021 21:15

He's a pain so i've told him to look for one. Why is it my job?

RJnomore1 · 03/01/2021 21:16

To add, I’m trying to do a doctorate through this as well but my brain feels like mud.

WaxOnFeckOff · 03/01/2021 21:19

Yep, RJ, I mean i have a car at my disposal and nice countryside nearby and I see folks on FB posting lovely pictures of their walks which irrationally makes me feel more shite instead of motivating me to go do the same. I'm not really a social butterfly and i don't really attend classes, I'm not big on shopping etc either. I live a fairly quiet life but I just can't seem to motivate myself to do anything. It's shite.

ssd · 03/01/2021 21:24

Cos ur a wummin Grin
WouldBeGood · 03/01/2021 21:25

The wholesome walk pictures on my Facebook are giving me evil stabby feelings.

I loathe the great outdoors at the best of times, and made a massive move to get away from it.😂

I want gyms, galleries, restaurants, shops, friends, holidays not an icy yomp round the bloody countryside, which is also now like Picca-bloody-dilly Circus

RJnomore1 · 03/01/2021 21:28

I don’t like shopping either but I like gym classes, I like gigs, I like eating out. I like going to work and seeing people and I went into people based work because of that.

I’m worried about my littlest who should be doing highers and I have no idea what will happen for her. I’m worried about my asthmatic husband who’s worked with the public in a key transport role all through. I’m just very sad and sorry for myself but I have a nice house, family here, good steady income, no reason to be sad. And most places on here saying you’re sad about what’s happening gets jumped on as wanting people to literally die which is why these threads are so good.

The bit about trying to learn while in survival mode struck a chord too.

💐 all of you. Especially those with small children worrying about jobs etc. I know you’ve got it so much harder.

WaxOnFeckOff · 03/01/2021 21:28

Cos ur a wummin

In a house of men - had a bit of a rant at DSs which DH missed out on as he was in bed. Rant about why are the vast majority of household chores left to women even if they also have a full time job. DS2 lives with his GF at Uni and says they do things 50/50 and I said good but have a proper think about whether that is reality of just what he thinks... DS1 lives at home and isn't pulling his weight. That's going to change.

To be fair DH does do things but it's nowhere near 50% or I suppose 33% based on 3 adults for most of the time.

Coldandcross · 03/01/2021 21:30

Just checking in. Like all of you trying tk figure out what more is left to lockdown other than the dreaded schools closures (please Lord no).
What’s the likelihood do we think that constriction will shut again?! We’ve just moved out of our house with work due to start tomorrow for the next 5 months 😬😬 I’m not sure I can cope with having to move everything back in. And home schooling. Argh!!

ssd · 03/01/2021 21:30

I'm the odd one out here too.

Probably why I mother all the young girls at work Grin

rookiemere · 03/01/2021 21:35

I've just had a bit of a minirant at DS 14. He's meant to empty the dishwasher and walk the dog occasionally but rarely does as mostly out footballing or latterly sledging with his mates.

I told him that he'd need to start doing this when he's home schooling , but he reckons he'll still be out footballing with his mates once he's finished what he needs to do. I don't know what to say as I reckon she'll crack down on that tomorrow and I just felt so sorry for him that I didn't have the enthusiasm to insist further.
