@IncludeWomenInTheSequel I’m construction too and hope my work follow suit but all working as normal so far. As are our rival companies too. Did you only find out after the announcement?

runningpink · 04/01/2021 19:27

@StatisticallyChallenged

Note that parent club is strongly recommending against the use of nannies this time. It was NOT banned last time
I’m a nanny and I wasn’t able to work during the last lockdown as both my jobs the parents werent classed as key workers.

Also not allowed again this time. Unless I had the kids at my home, apart from having no toys etc here and as much as I love them I don’t want kids trashing my house! Would also invalidate my insurance!

Doesn’t make sense that childminders can work with multiple families and I can’t.

Worst · 04/01/2021 19:28

Hi @Goldrill yes I thought that was odd too. It was 2 miles from home in the first lockdown, but advice is conflicting this time.

Both on the same page:
“ Travel no further than you need to reach to a safe, non-crowded place to exercise in a socially distanced way.”
... and ...
“ local outdoor recreation, sport or exercise, walking, cycling, golf, or running that starts and finishes at the same place (which can be up to 5 miles from the boundary of your local authority area) as long as you abide by the rules on meeting other households”

blowinahoolie · 04/01/2021 19:28

DS1 is 13 but will be meeting with one friend outdoors for social interaction. This is allowed, according to government rules. Thank goodness. A life line for a lot of teenagers struggling.

WouldBeGood · 04/01/2021 19:29

How are we back here?

What a shitshow. Back to square one after a year.

@ItsIgginningtolookalotlikeXmas

Notanactualsheep it's very rare for a teacher to be viewed as a close contact of a student (though obviously we should be as breathing same air for prolonged period) due to under 2m/over 15 mins rule. Vaccine doesn't sound very useful given what you're saying! What applies to education staff would apply to medical staff too wouldn't it?
Ah, OK, I didn't realise that. We had a few teachers off when a child was positive, but I realise I don't have the whole story there and it may have been more complicated. I assume it would depend on bubbles etc used in that school and whether they were able to follow the guidelines. And yes, I think the same would apply to NHS or care staff, though I can see they would be more at risk of serious illness compared to others of their age due to the number of positive patients they deal with and the necessity for close contact, albeit with some ppe. So the benefit of the vaccine to them personally would be greater. I don't think it's useless at all, but that's in terms of directly protecting the cohort most at risk. So eventually it won't matter even if everyone is breathing covid over granny, because granny won't get sick. Of course, eventually it'll be great to reduce the tiny risk that breathing covid over the healthy 30 year old marathon runner also won't make her very sick, but that seems a long way away and far down the list of priorities. Personally I think the 30 year old marathon running teacher should get higher priority than the 30yomr accounts executive, but not as much as a 50 year old accounts executive with asthma. And so on.

But frankly I'm glad I don't have to make these decisions, because it's bound to upset many more people than it satisfies.

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/01/2021 19:41

DS wants to return to Uni (well his accommodation) in the middle of the month. I'm thinking that he could in terms of risk management but not sure if that counts under the updated regs.

A: I'm pretty sure he's had it. B: he had two negative tests before coming home C: he can arrange tests at uni from 7th Jan. D: He's happy to stay at home for at least 10 days before leaving (he's managed that since he came back tbh!) D:he's happy to take a click and collect grocery order back up with him and stay in his accommodation other than to go for his covid tests. E: he'd be travelling by car door to door. F:he'll be back just sharing with his GF who as it stands, he's not allowed to see and doesn't want to wait until February. G: he hasn't had any F2F lectures so far and doesn't look like any on the horizon but we've paid for his accommodation so he may as well use it.

I've said as long as he is careful not to do anything that would affect his relationship with the Uni then it's none of my business.

Finfintytint · 04/01/2021 19:41

Can I treat volunteering at a food bank outside my tier as essential? I don’t need to travel, it’s not essential to me but do I treat it as travelling to “work” even though it’s not paid and in theory, others more local could volunteer instead of me.

WouldBeGood · 04/01/2021 19:42

@NotAnActualSheep I’d love to be making the decisions!

ItsIgginningtolookalotlikeXmas · 04/01/2021 19:42

...has occurred to me much more likely a primary teacher would need to be off as with little ones they very likely are within touching distance all day!
I only know a handful of people who have had covid, one elderly who sadly died and two of the younger ones have long term headaches/fatigue/sensory issues, so I do worry about having it even though I'm likely to survive.

WouldBeGood · 04/01/2021 19:42

@Finfintytint that’s within the guidelines as charitable work

If it's any help I don't know any teachers out running marathons. I don't know why that has made me laugh so much!

Anecdatally, any other teacher I've spoken to today has been really pleased about the vaccine. I think take up will be very high.

Grin But I hate to upset people. So politics is not my natural home.

StatisticallyChallenged · 04/01/2021 19:46

@runningpink i think the rules might have changed at some point. We had a few staff who picked up nannying right at the start and early on they were allowing it as I remember checking for them. I recall getting emails from agencies advertising too. I think they might have then issued something afterwards which of course useless as lots of people won't have checked again. I have a feeling this was one of the early divergences between Scotland and England too and there was uk guidance allowing it. Basically a big fat mess

WouldBeGood · 04/01/2021 19:49

@NotAnActualSheep I wouldn’t like to be a politician. But I’m good at making big decisions as part of my job, no popularity needed, just decisions based on evidence.

I was discussing this with DH over dinner, ie whether unis will let students back into halls, wanting to avoid the debacle of last time. We came to pretty much the same conclusions as you... That so many of them had already had it, and were used to limiting contacts now, that it probably wouldn't make much difference. Though presumably there will be very little f2f teaching unless there's labs involved. Travel is allowed for education (albeit not much education will need travelling, other than uni level) so that would be fine.
WaxOnFeckOff · 04/01/2021 19:54

Yes @NotAnActualSheep, his flat only has the two of them, they never moved anyone into the 3rd bedroom and suspect they won't now. He got all his partying out in the first semester in 2019 and he's genuinely just snuggled in his wee love nest. When they were allowed, they were meeting up with one other couple occasionally but otherwise have been getting shopping delivered and the occasional take-away and working their way through Netflix and doing their on-line Uni stuff.

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/01/2021 19:56

It would certainly save the hours and hours long facetime and texting/messaging :o

Grin If I were a teacher I'd be far too knackered to even think about marathons so don't know why I said that. I think I subconsciously assume you are much stronger people than me Wink

Yes, I think the take up will be big, and the long covid thing is a concern as xmas says, so there is definitely a potential benefit other than "not dying". I haven't seen anything on whether the vaccine is thought to prevent that or not, but I reckon it would be worth a shot (pun not intended...).

No we pretty much shut down just before Xmas as we'd be in Tier 4 from Boxing Day. Haven't heard today about what'll happen next; we're only supposed to be off until the 18th but that'll have to be extended I'd think.

runningpink · 04/01/2021 20:10

@StatisticallyChallengedy bosses were good at checking the details after each announcement and nothing allowed me to go back until beginning of July.
I feel awful sat at home and the parents are juggling everything.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 04/01/2021 20:12

Boris just confirming stay at home order for England too. Schools shut, but one critical difference to Scotland - nurseries open to all. I wish we'd had that recognition that looking after toddlers while working from home is just asking too much. Not for us, we're lucky to qualify for a place, but lots of other parents are absolutely on their knees with it.

Bikingbear · 04/01/2021 20:12

Boris has closed English schools to half term - for once he's gone a step further than Nic. But his nurseries are staying open.

Working with preschoolers in the house is brutal
